It didn't get me like the others did. Sugar is ok too, but it's taken ages to chart.

Fair play... I prefer it to both a Brooklyn and Hard To Be Myself but they're all good!

Welcome to my EOY Top 100 chart of 2017. It was a year when Ed Sheeran dominated many charts but had little success here, Taylor Swift told the world to F. Off, and Rag N Bone Man burst onto the mainstream countdown but stayed away from mine. On this EOY chart there is no DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Chainsmokers or Drake. Also absent is Little Mix, Sam Smith, "Emperor's New" Stormzy & Clean Bandit (I'm just finding them a bit forumulaic these days). And no Niall, James or ZAYN. It's not that I don't like big artists, I just don't listen to them that much. Instead, among the Top 40 you'll find a selection of much lesser-known electronic, indie pop, some house tunes, a bit of disco, bits of alternative, a couple of psychedelic tunes, some funk, and the odd random mainstream act thrown in - so feel free to look away now!! By the way the 'tags' were provided by Last FM.

I listened to 17% more music than last year (thank you Last FM) but less tracks. I guess this means I've liked the music I've listened to a lot more than I did in 2016 (?) This is supported by the reduction in tracks entering the Top 75 in 2017 - 625, compared to 693 in 2016 and 746 in 2015. In 2017 I listened to each song an average of 3.2 times compared to 2.8 in 2016. Right, enough stats ahem. There were 18 number ones in 2017 and all but two of them are in the Top 40: Ekkah's "Can't Give it Up" and Feder's "Breathe" top and tail the Year, but lower activity in January after the steam had run out for Ekkah, and Feder's end of year arrival has seen them achieve only chart positions #46 and #67 respectively.

It's been a good year for artists like Little Dragon, Pond, Ronika, Miami Horror, and as for newcomers Fickle Friends - they've had a phenomenal 2017 with 1-2-3 of their tracks at the top of the charts at different points of the year!

Before starting this countdown, a reminder of the Top 10s of 2016 and 2015 (so you know what you're in for):

2016
1 1 Yehan Jehan - Swallow the Horizon
2 1 M83 — Go! (feat. Mai Lan)
3 1 OneRepublic — Kids
4 1 Kungs vs Cookin’ on 3 Burners — This Girl
5 2 Frankmusik — Day Break
6 1 Calvin Harris — This Is What You Came For
7 1 Sam Setton — Berlin
8 1 Honne — Someone That Loves You
9 1 Disciples & David Guetta — No Worries
10 2 Young Franco — Drop Your Love (ft. DiRTY RADiO)

2015
1 1 Julio Bashmore – Kong (Ft. Bixby)
2 1 Ben Browning – Make It Easy
3 1 Miami Horror – Love Like Mine (Ft. Cleopold)
4 1 Clean Bandit – Stronger (Ft. Olly Alexander)
5 1 Mark Ronson - I Can't Lose (Ft. Keyone Starr) (DD Remix)
6 2 Eons – One Way To The Red Planet
7 1 Giorgio Moroder – Right Here, Right Now (Ft. Kylie Minogue)
8 1 Disclosure - Holding On (Ft. Gregory Porter)
9 2 Mark Ronson – Uptown Funk (ft. Bruno Mars)
10 1 New Order - People on the High Line

2015

4 1 Clean Bandit – Stronger (Ft. Olly Alexander)

Before we hit the TOP 40 here are the 3 songs which just missed out. Come on cheer up!
Image
43 [4] FRANZ FERDINAND - ALWAYS ASCENDING
click for vid

Image
They returned in style with a 2in1 style track akin to initial breakthrough hit 'Take Me Out'. Pounding disco bassline and their unique vocal style sent this up the chart but didn't quite make the EOY.

42 [3] BEAROID - ENEMY click for vid

Image
Barcelonian synth wizard Dani Belenguer brought several tunes to the chart in the last 12 months, this was his biggest.

41 [3] KATY PERRY - CHAINED TO THE RHYTHM click for vid

Image
KP chose the perfect technicolor video to accompany this track which did well for many, something about the obvious lyrics possibly stopped it being even bigger.

40 [5] THE KILLERS - THE MAN click for vid

ImageImage

It came in July. The soaring intro. The bassline. The funk. The tongue in cheek. The best!

39 [6] TLC – IT’S SUNNY click for vid

Image Image

Back in 2017 with an entirely crowdfunded album, this was the second and best release from them – an unusually upbeat medley of Heatwave and Bobby Hebb.

38 [3] KELJET – LEAP OF FAITH click for vid

ImageImage

Who is Keljet? They are two Dutch DJs who teamed up with British newcomer Asha on this Disclosure-like tune.

37 [2] MIAMI HORROR - LEILA click for vid

Image Image

I was on tenterhooks for the first 2017 release from Miami Horror. Turned out they’d chosen to sample Kid Creole, who’d have thought! Bloody good sax in the middle.

36 [2] BASTILLE – WORLD GONE MAD click for vid

ImageImage

Vocalist Dan Smith moans and booms his way through this slow ballad. Great song. Rubbish movie.

Bastille's "World Gone Mad'' was a bit disappointing for me.
Miami Horror got even more creative through the years.

35 [7] LANY – GOOD GIRLS click for vid

ImageImage

LANY returned in full funk style with this in March, the only song in the Top 40 not to have made the Weekly Top 5.

34 [3] GORILLAZ – STROBELITE (FEAT. PEVEN EVERETT) click for vid

ImageImage

The biggest club tune from Humanz. Didn't rate much of their other promos this year but this one was ace.

33 [5] LITTLE DRAGON – STROBE LIGHT click for vid

ImageImage

Did I hear an echo, oh not quite, this is ‘Strobe [space] Light’. One of 3 major tunes from Little Dragon this year with its trip hop meander-thon. Ironically it was behind ‘Strobelite’ for several weeks in the Top 10, ends up in front in the end ;-)

32 [2] ERIC SHARP – THE THIRST (FEAT. ZHAO) click for vid

ImageImage

Eric Sharp has the biggest handlebar mootache in House music. Zhao is described as a soul singer. This was their debut and it was big.

31 [2] MOON BOOTS – TEAR MY HEART (FEAT. LULU JAMES) click for vid

ImageImage

American producer Moon Boots has been popping up on my playlist for a few years now. This was an absolute belter of a track with its way out synths and incessant vocals from Brit Lulu James.

30 [2] SUB FOCUS – DON’T YOU FEEL IT (FEAT. ALMA) click for vid

Image Image

Quite a slow melancholy sound from Sub Focus, with rising Finnish singer ALMA on the vocals, played loads on mainstream radio but never made its mark on the commercial charts.

29 [3] LUXXURY – I NEED YOU click for vid

ImageImage

Great feelgood disco tune from LUXXURY Aka Blake Robin which stormed up the chart in October.

28 [2] CLASSIXX – IN THESE FINE TIMES click for vid

ImageImage

This was never offically a single but should have been. Mesmorising synths with deadpan vocals lifted this right up the chart in March.

27 [2] RAC – THE BEAUTIFUL GAME (FEAT. ST. LUCIA) click for vid

ImageImage

St. Lucia were at one point probably my favourite band (2012/13). Not too much has happened since then but this collaboration with Portugese producer RAC was certainly worthy of attention.

26 [2] THE MANEKEN – YOU & I click for vid

ImageImage

We appear to be in a wilderness without music videos at the moment. Never mind. It remains to be seen whether Ukranian artist can match the success of ‘You & I’. A very good synth track, held #2 spot for 3 weeks.

25 [4] ARCADE FIRE – EVERYTHING NOW click for vid

Image Image

Instantly appealing thanks to the instrumental piano chorus. Some reviews I read compared this to ABBA's 'Dancing Queen' but it didn't put me off.

24 [1] POND – COLDER THAN ICE click for vid

ImageImage

The intro to this still blows me away every time. Pond have had some epic tunes this year and all 4 of them appear in the Top 100. Amazing synths.

23 [3] CALVIN HARRIS/PHARRELL WILLIAMS/KATY PERRY/BIG SEAN – FEELS click for vid

ImageImage

To perhaps the most mainstream song in the Top 40. Love or hate it 'Feels' was a big hit for many and had two cracks at the Top 5 here.

22 [2] JESSIE WARE - ALONE click for vid

ImageImage

When 'Midnight' came out I was confused and didn't know what to think. Then I heard this one and I knew I liked its warmth and it showcases Jessie's voice really well. This is as rnb as it gets for me.

21 [2] COLDPLAY – MIRACLES (SOMEONE SPECIAL) (FEAT. BIG SEAN) click for vid

ImageImage

Ah, where would the EOY chart be without Coldplay. This, their 3rd successive appearance is led by some beautiful strings.

20 [3] MEN I TRUST - TAILWHIP click for vid

ImageImage

Sheer brilliance here from Canadian indie band Men I Trust. Heard it once and immediately loved the funky bassline and guitar. Real footage in the video of the band when they were kids ahh.

19 [2] HURTS – READY TO GO click for vid

ImageImage

Brilliant piano right from the intro on this Hurts track coupled with a wailing voice and chanting vocals. Superb.

18 [2] RITA ORA - ANYWHERE click for vid

Image [/img]Image

Haven’t really listened much to Rita Ora before, but this got in my head due to the sampling on the chorus. It has a nice laidback feeling without trying to make a statement.

17 [1] LITTLE DRAGON – SWEET click for vid

ImageImage

The first track from 'Season High' blasted to #1 for a week (what! 1 week?!) in April with its trademark high pitched synths. Not sure about the girl in the tree outside Burger King.

16 [1] SUB FOCUS – LOVE DIVINE click for vid

ImageImage

Absolutely stormed the chart hitting #1 for 3 weeks in January. Nick Douwma returned to his drum n bass roots producing amazing breakbeats and strings on this, straight out of 1991.

"The Man" is decent. Haven't been seeing it on many year-end lists, though! "World Gone Mad" is just okay for me.

"Feels" is catchy disco-funk magic. "Ready to Go" was a late discovery for me, but I like it. "Anywhere" is carefree brilliance. I love it! It just might be the best thing she's done.

15 [1] CRYSTAL BATS - ANYONEclick for vid

ImageImage

One word: Dreamy. This climbed to #1 for a week but hung around for awhile after. It came just at the start of summer too which probably helped.

14 [2] ANDREW MCMAHON IN THE WILDERNESS – SO CLOSE click for vid

ImageImage

Exceptionally catchy feelgood chorus (still makes me smile) brightened up my February. Video is a bit random though.

13 [2] CHRIS TALL – MORNING GOLDEN SUNRISE click for vid

Image[/img]Image

Little known piano deep house track became a massive hit for the Swedish DJ, reaching #2 in July. Less than 8K hits on YouTube.

12 [1] MIAMI HORROR – SIGN OF THE TIMES click for vid

ImageImage

The Second and (surprisingly) biggest song from the band's conceptual "The Shapes" EP. 3 weeks at #1 in April. So 80s was this with its guitar hooks and synths and Josh Moriarty did a David Byrne with the vocals.

11 [1] RONIKA – ALL COMES BACK 2 Uclick for vid

ImageImage

Twirling disco lights, funky synths and soft focus gave Veronica Sampson a huge #1 tune back in May.
