Regina Spektor (Russian: Реги́нa Спе́ктор) is a Russian-born American singer-songwriter and pianist. She was born in Moscow (former Soviet Union, now Russia), and began classical training on the piano at the age of six. After self-releasing her first three records and gaining popularity in New York City's independent music scenes, particularly the anti-folk scene centered on New York City's East Village, Spektor signed with Sire Records in 2004 and began achieving greater mainstream recognition.
Spektor's songs are not usually autobiographical, but are based on scenarios and characters drawn from her imagination. Her songs show influences from folk, punk, rock, Jewish,Russian, hip hop, jazz, and classical music. She also uses a variety of different and somewhat unorthodox vocal and musical techniques when singing and playing instruments.
Welcome to the artist survivor of my favourite singer in the whole world! This lady marked my high school days discovering music and, even though Tori Amos took over the throne for a few years, Regina wows me more and more with each new album and she is definitely my one and only #1 forever.
I don't know if there will be many interested (counting on leo!), so I will stick to the singles + representatives from her first two albums (the ones she picked for her compilation). Since her catalogue is so much more than her singles, I'll allow nominations of two songs by each participant. So far, we have:
Consequence of Sounds
On the Radio
Dance Anthem of the 80's
Man of a Thousand Faces
All the Rowboats
Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)
You've Got Time
Black and White
Older and Taller
