I like Barbara, & think that she is a great Singer, but I think that a claim in one of the UK's News Papers was wrong, a few days ago.

It said that Barbra was:, 'The Best Selling Female Singer Of The 20th Century' - with 70 Million Sales. Firstly, I would have thought that she had sold more than 70 Million Records in the 20th Century - especially with her huge, & consistent, USA Sales.

Secondly, although I think she sold more than 70 Million Records, in the 20th Century, would not Madonna have beaten her? (Perhaps Celine Dion, also - and maybe Mariah Carey).

How about the most recent claim made by Streisand people in German news? She is claimed to have "sold more records than the Beatles". Well done, Babs!

These have been incorporated into the First Post, Page One.

The total for post-1991 releases is about 11.8m. Barbra's soundscan total since 1991 is about 20m.

Hence around 8.2m is from pre-1991 releases (mostly compilations I would guess). So around 500,000 soundscan sales each year have been "catalogue". This must have been higher in the 1990's because recent catalogue figures are

2005 - 233,000
2006 - 260,000
2007 - 176,000 so far.

Guilty Pleasures sold 429,000 in 2005 and the current figure is 509,000. Therefore it has sold only 80,000 in 2006/7.

The most interesting stat is 454,000 for the Just For the Record box set, making it close to double platinum.

The only post-1991 album they missed was Just For the Record Highlights (1CD).
hi,thanks for these figures, they are very heartening, despite the fact that lately she's been mainly just a "performing" artist and yes, this might be a case of one too many live albums.

For all the hype of Guilty Pleasures,it has turned out to be a major failure and disappointment.

I find this quite interesting. She holds the US crown, no matter how you choose to slice the cards. Not to mention is argueably also one of the best actressess of the 60s/70s. What I am saying is there really isnt a "Barbra" today. Such an amazing singer.

You will also see that after she eventually dies, there will be a huge release of back of Barbra Striesand albums. It is quite well known just how particular she was, and how many songs never made it onto records. I have a feeling that there is a huge unreleased catalogue hiding there.
