How ironic that just as they go down a more commercial route that their sales plummet. :o

That looks kinda peculiar. Turns out it was released in 2002 on DVD and as a double CD.
The alternate version was released in 2003 and is an edited version of both (1 CD and 1 DVD). Strange marketing...

The RIAA album certs total 6,500,000.
Total album Soundscan by Dec 2007 is 7,990,000.
Kinda interesting that this band has higher SS figure than RIAA shipment, even though they released 4 albums pre-SS!

One obvious reason is that during the past 10 years they've had several albums selling 200-300K without reaching Gold.

According to MJ's Columbia thread the Megadeth catalog was still available at Columbia House by late 1996, so some of their titles might be under-certified.

That's the case with quite a few bands. Slayer's SS total is at least double the amount listed by the RIAA. As with Megadeth, this is probably due to the band having several albums not quite reaching the required amount for Gold status.

I don't think you can compare Slayer with Megadeth. They're not in the same league when it comes to commercial success. Slayer only had 4 albums reach Gold.

Motörhead has 0 sales according to the RIAA... so obviously smaller bands (commercially speaking) has higher SS sales than RIAA certs indicate.

Megadeth has 6 Gold albums, 5 Platinum albums and 1 double Platinum album.

Well, I guess you can compare Megadeth with Pantera. They have 7 Gold albums, 5 Platinum albums and 1 double Platinum album for a RIAA total of 7 million. Their SS total is significantly higher than this. Around the same as Megadeth's or perhaps higher.

I know Pantera formed in the 80's, but they didn't really have mainstream success until the 90's. Their BB200 chart debut was in 1992... Their first Gold record was in 1993.
So most of their album sales is tracked by Soundscan.

Megadeth was succesful pre SS era with chart debut in 1986 and first Gold record in 1988.
