I've only just begun to look at this thread, but it's fascinating.

What seems strange is that, in the early period of "Irish Artists" charts, these don't quite seem to link up with the "official" charts. I don't know yet if this gets better or worse in the later months, especially if/when the top 20 contains more Irish records.......but, looking at the week of January 21, 1976:

beatlened wrote:16 19 LARRY CUNNINGHAM and MARGO - HELLO MR PETERS
[NM] BRENDAN SHINE - TURN OUT THE LIGHTS
[NM] CHIPS - TWICE A WEEK
[NM] RED HURLEY - BROKEN PROMISES

Irish Artists

1 1 LARRY CUNNINGHAM and MARGO - HELLO MR PETERS
2 5 BRENDAN SHINE - TURN OUT THE LIGHTS
3 9 HARVEST - MORNING SKY
4 10 RED HURLEY - BROKEN PROMISES
5 3 CHIPS - TWICE A WEEK
6 2 BRENDAN GRACE - COMBINE HARVESTER
......the "near misses" include the numbers 2, 4 and 5 of the "Irish Top Ten" - but not the number 3 from Harvest, which should presumably be a "nearer" near miss than Red Hurley and Chips!

It's true that in some of the charts mistakes like that appeared. It might be a good idea to go back through them and point out the oddities!!

Researching 1977's charts has been a bit of a problem because I couldn't find the following: -

The first charts of the year for Irish & International;
the first 2 charts compiled when the Irish and International records were combined again in February - these charts were "Courtesy of Starlight Magazine" so presumably they were published there as well;
All of July;
the first 2 weeks of September.
That's what I'm missing so far - the Herald didn't publish them.

I have managed to get all of other charts up til the end of September and will look at October on soon.

I was hoping especially that the first 2 weeks of September charts (which I'm missing) would confirm that WAY DOWN by Elvis dropped completely off the chart from number one. That's what Larry Gogan's book implies. I doubt it happened but until I find the charts I won't know. Anyway I might hold off posting 1977 until I get a clearer picture of the missing charts.

Found out that the opinion poll version of the charts started in October 1975. I'll post the few charts I have from 1975 in this thread as well at the end. My research for 1977 as I said previously is patchy but I'll post what I have and fill in the blanks with whatever is listed in Larry Gogan's book. The Evening Herald does not seem to have printed any charts in 1978 so I'll need to look elsewhere for those

I've now studied the first half of these postings in some detail - up to the point at which the charts became segregated - and I have just a few observations, which you might want to add as footnotes for the relevant weeks:

January 14, 1976

Based on the Irish Artists Top 10, these two records should probably also have been listed as "near misses":

BRENDAN GRACE - COMBINE HARVESTER

DANNY DOYLE - GREENHILLS OF KERRY

January 21, 1976

Based on the Irish Artists Top 10, this record should probably also have been listed as a "near miss":

HARVEST - MORNING SKY

January 28, 1976

Based on the Irish Artists Top 10, these three records should probably also have been listed as "near misses":

HARVEST - MORNING SKY
PENNY McLEAN - LADY BUMP
RONNIE MEDFORD - WHAT COLOUR IS GOD'S SKIN

February 11, 1976

Presumably it was discovered during this week that Penny McLean was not actually an Irish artist - as her single "Lady Bump" was excluded from the Irish Artists Top 10 only from this point onwards!

March 17, 1976

Based on the Irish Artists Top 10 and other stated positions in the main chart, it can be deduced that BRENDAN SHINE - TURN OUT THE LIGHTS must have been either 22 or 23.

April 14, 1976

It is possible that TINA CHARLES - I LOVE TO LOVE should fill the only gap in this week's chart - the number 30 - or it could have been something entirely different. Either way, though, it's almost an unprecedentedly bad result for the previous week's number 2 !!

May 5, 1976

The first real inconsistency between the charts is that TONY KENNY - DON'T LET LIFE GET YOU DOWN is not in the main top 30 - although, based on the Irish Artists Top 10, he ought be above the Irish acts at numbers 22, 23, 26 and 29 !

May 19, 1976

This week, eleven Irish artists are in the main top 30 - so, as well as the full Irish Artists Top 10, it can be deduced that EILEEN REID - LIZZIE LEONARD would be the number 11.

June 9, 1976

In an unusual week in which all 30 hits from the previous Top 30 remain in the chart again, there is another minor inconsistency: GINA, DALE HAZE & THE CHAMPIONS - FREEDOM is just above PHILOMENA BEGLEY & THE RAMBLIN' MEN - ONCE AROUND THE DANCE FLOOR in the main chart, but just below it in the Irish Artists Top 10.

June 16, 1976

Brendan Shine's hit should be shown as a re-entry in the top 20 this week, not a new entry.

I agree with all of the points in your post. Rather than making footnotes maybe it's better to leave your original post because it explains things pretty clearly.

One thing with regard to "Near Misses". Although technically the records you have listed should be listed as near misses if we're looking to get a list of the best selling records, the main function of the "Near Misses" list was to provide the voting panel with an extra few records to vote for that week. The voting was done by selecting the best 20 records from any of the tables or charts listed. This was easy enough when the chart was combined and at that time they could select from the "Top 20", "The Irish Top 10", the "Near Misses" and the "New Releases" lists. Sometimes records were listed more than once (They could be in the Irish Top 10 and in the Top 20/ Near Misses the same week) and I presume mistakes could have been made in the voting, deliberate or otherwise, which may not have been picked up on. Some of the records you've named there may have been left off the "Near Misses" list to avoid duplication.

When the charts were split the voting panel voted 1-10 for Irish and 1-20 for international and each record could be listed only once in the voting coupon. In theory at least!!

On with the charts for 1977. Starting with the few remaining International Charts. I'm missing several complete charts for this year so I'm going to have to do a bit of CZB style charts where I'll list the chart positions I know and try to determine what the remaining records are and fill in the blanks. * This was the last International Chart. The charts were combined again from the 23rd of February and the Irish Artists initially took a bigger chunk of chart placings. The charts from this point on are provided by Starlight Magazine. Based on Sales maybe? There were no longer any voting panels provided in the Herald at any rate, and for the first 2 weeks the Herald didn't even print the charts. There are no more "Near Misses" or records listed as "On The Move".

So continuing on with the new combined Irish Singles Top 20. Numbers in brackets are the Last Week positions in the published chart which refer to the sales chart from the week before, not the separate Irish and International charts

The Last Week position for records marked with * in the chart above come from the Irish Artists chart. The previous week's Irish Artists no. 1 RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET by Glen Curtin, doesn't appear to have charted in the first of the re-combined charts. The #11 is listed on the chart as "The Freshmen - Let There Be Peace", which is the name of the recent Anna McGoldrick hit. I'm guessing it's meant to be "And God Created Woman" for this chart and the next 2

So far I'm only up to the end of the first page of this thread, with just one observation and a few minor corrections:

- I think you did mention somewhere that occasionally the same records could be "on the move" as both Irish and International future hits. As far as I can tell, the only week in which this actually happened was August 4th, in which both Sandy Kelly and the Horslips are listed twice?

Corrections:

On 3/3/76, the Dublin City Ramblers hit should be a re-entry.

On 13/10/76, Des Lee should be a new entry (unless it had previously charted earlier than 1976?)

On 20/10/76 Steve Harley should be a re-entry, but Loudest Whisper should be a new entry ("unless".... as above)

On 8/12/76 the Swarbriggs should be a new entry ("unless......."); and you have a "6" which is maybe meant to be the last week position for the Irish number 11. If there should be a number there at all, the prior week would be 5.

None of the records I had marked as re-entries had previously charted. All amendments duly made

With regard to the double listings, it was technically impossible for a record to be "on the move" in both charts. I don't think it happened. Sandy Duskey and The Horslips were listed in the international chart because there was no "on the move" section in the Irish Artists chart for the first month.

Where duplication occured it was usually that a record could appear in the earlier Irish Artists charts (the unnoficial ones) and also be listed in the main chart or as "on the move" in the main chart, which could feature Irish and International artists at that time. This gave the voting panel 2 boxes to tick for each of those records. Double votes cudda happened, I dunno

I guess telepathy can only work so far......

When I wrote:- I think you did mention somewhere that occasionally the same records could be "on the move" as both Irish and International future hits. As far as I can tell, the only week in which this actually happened was August 4th, in which both Sandy Kelly and the Horslips are listed twice?
.......you realised that when I said "Sandy Kelly" I meant "Sandy Duskey" - but not that when I said "August 4th", I meant "July 28th" !!

This seems to be the only week of doubling-up......and inconsistency!

I wonder if the Sandy Duskey track was the same song that was a number one in Holland several years later for the Dolly Dots, and a hit in Ireland later still for Joanna and Tequila Sunrise ?

For the first six months of 1977, which I've now studied more closely, I see that you have regarded hits which came into the combined chart after previously being in the Irish-only chart as re-entries - presumably this is consistent with www.irishcharts.ie and the book, although in these instances maybe a case could be argued for them to be "new" entries.......

Just two other observations for this period:

- it's strange that on February 23rd a different Mike Oldfield track came into the top 20 from the one that was in the unofficial bottom ten the previous week. Could these be two sides of the same single?

- If only the extended charts were official, 10CC - THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE would be a contender for the fastest faller within the top 30 - number 3 on February 2nd, number 29 on February 9th!

Most of these hits are just listed as continuous chart runs on the website which doesn't really tell the full story, tho a record that drops off the Irish only chart and reappears later in the combined chart is given a separate listing

I do believe that THE WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE was the follow up single to PORTSMOUTH, at least in the UK. I'm assuming Ireland followed suit, so they weren't 2 sides of the same record. Interestingly such a thing happened with An Emotional Fish in the Irish charts in 1989 from what I can make out on the website, when CRY LIKE A BABY charted for 2 weeks and then was replaced by GREY MATTER for the next 4 weeks. Both sides were on the same single, so I guess instead of listing it separately as the website does it should really be a double-a side?? It has to be said that in the UK charts I know of at least a couple of records were both sides are listed separately and never in the same week, namely REASON TO BELIEVE/ MAGGIE MAY by Rod Stewart and I DON'T KNOW WHY/ MY CHERIE AMOUR by Stevie Wonder. I guess maybe in all these cases the records were flipped at either radio or the record company decided to promote the b-side instead. Anyway I'll see what you do with it over on the 1988-1990 thread

Ruby Winters is credited in Larry's book and on www.irishcharts.ie with two hits. These are "Lean On Me" in 1972 and "Lovely Day" in 1978. These should be credited to Bill Withers. If Ruby Winters actually had a hit, it's most likely somewhere around this time. The song "I Will" reached No. 4 in the UK in November and December 1977. I'm guessing that it was also a hit in the Irish charts and that gremlins at the printing stage left it (and Bill Withers' credit) out of the book, which of course was copied on to the website.

Isn't that how many there should be.......?

beatlened wrote:Interestingly such a thing happened with An Emotional Fish in the Irish charts in 1989 from what I can make out on the website, when CRY LIKE A BABY charted for 2 weeks and then was replaced by GREY MATTER for the next 4 weeks. Both sides were on the same single, so I guess instead of listing it separately as the website does it should really be a double-a side?? Anyway I'll see what you do with it over on the 1988-1990 thread
I did some checking of this particular anomaly, so as to get it right on the 1988-1990 thread (something I really should have done with the Paul McCartney hit too.... ) and it WAS a double A-side. That treatment on the website doesn't even match up with what was played on the chart show!

I have none of the charts for December 1977. These are the songs that were most likely on those charts. The last 3 charts for the month contain the same songs. 2 of those are probably identical. I haven't tried to estimate any of the real chart positions here, though the number 1 is known
