Coldplay Track Hits 2 Million Downloads
By Juliana Koranteng, London

Coldplay's "Violet Hill" was downloaded more than 2 million times while available for free, according to EMI.

The track was available from coldplay.com for one week from April 29. The track was commercially released yesterday (May 6) via standard digital outlets such as iTunes, although it is still being streamed on the band's Web site.

As previously reported, EMI say the track was downloaded 600,000 times in its first 24 hours of availability, causing the Web site to crash. The label says the 2 million figure is four times that of the combined sales of the Official U.K. Charts Co.'s entire Top 40 chart last week.

The only physical version of "Violet Hill" -- a 7-inch vinyl recording distributed with copies of U.K. rock-music magazine NME -- is also available today (Weds).

Viva La Vida would be #13 on the UK chart but was ineligible for the chart. It sold about 8,000 copies.

It wasn't eligible for the chart as some sales were deemed a freebie - if you pre-ordered the album you could use the price you paid for the track as money off the album. The track could be bought without pre-ordering the album but the chart compilers couldn't separate the sales. Sales will count towards the album sale though, so long as the album is bought in its entirety. The track price is being treated as a discount.

In the US the sales have been included in the Hot 100 AND the money will be deducted from the album price and the album sale counts too. Different chart rules...

Does that basically mean the album has been pre-ordered 100,742 times? Because thats how the song was obtained, through the pre-ordering of the album right..
