Well, there is a lot of information on different topic about Pink Floyd, and we have some ideas about what their real sales are. But it would be good to have some information about them in the main market. So here we go.

GERMANY SALES

Key: year of release, year of certification, name, shipment

1967- none- Piper at the Gates of Dawn

1971- none- Relics

1975- 1990- Wish You Were Here 500.000
1977- 1990- Animals 500.000
1979- 1993- The Wall 2.000.000
1981- none- Collection of great dance songs
1983-1990- The Final Cut 250.000
1987- 1987- A Momentary Lapse of Reason 250.000
1988- 1988- Delecate sound of thunder 250.000
1994- 1994- The Division Bell 750.000
1995- 2006- Pulse 500.000
2000- none- The wall live
2001- 2002- Echoes 150.000

A nice pattern of certifications, with some high shipments. Dispite that, they are still undercertified there.

"Wish you were here" reached number 2 in the charts, 28 weeks at top ten, and 298 weeks in the charts (more than any other album there). But in 1990 it was "only" certified platinum for a shipment of 500 k. I would say that thse album could be at about 2 M there. Albums like "Animals" seem to have sold more than their certifications.

They have 6 number one albums.

2001- Echoes- N 1 (number 5 of 2001) 500.000 (2001)

So what heppaned there?. A great chart action but not many sales information. In 1994, "The division bell" sold 500 k, and it was the best selling albums according to hit parede. It could have sold about 600 k by now. Albums like "The dark side of the moon" could be close to the million copies there.

1995 Pulse - 150,000

Others
1973 A Nice Pair
1992 Shine On Box Set (9CD) - 11,111

Irritating or what? Yet again cria certs are patchy and incomplete.

Edu recently posted some rare Canadian soundscan figures.

The Wall sold 54,826 in 1998 and 38,174 in 2005
Dark Side of the Moon sold 56,246 in 2005

Multiply by 10 to get a comparison with US figures. Just like the US, these albums sell GOLD nearly every year. Shows no sign of stopping.

Floyd really are the catalogue Kings.

Well done HUR, this band needed it's own thread at last. I'll add Canadian sales to the post above soon. Hopefully you'll be able to fit all the sales figures onto Page One of this thread.

Thank you Basil, great information as always. When I asked for USA information I thought you would make that breakdown. I like your "format", the way you combine the numbers, the colours, it´s easy to read.

I have requested sales stats from EMI for Norway; OK, small country but I belive highest music sales per capita in the world (and with a very high proportion of sales being foreign releases)and PF should have sold well above 1 mill albums in that country since 1973.
I know for a fact from year end charts published on paper back in the days that Division, Pulse and Echoes all sold well above 100 000 each only in the year of their release and I'm pretty sure all studio-releases since Dark Side have all sold well above 100 000 each. But cannot prove anything until I hear back from EMI.

Chart placings are available (in local language but with charts that may or may not make sense to other-speakers):
http://lista.vg.no/artist_info.phpArtis ... istId=1673

Some "soft" facts:
-The Wall was no1 in 19 weeks from December 79 until May 1980. God knows how many units it must have shipped.
-All album releases since Darks Side (excl the cruel joke that 'A Collection of great dance songs' is) has recieved Platinum and all peaked at minimum No2.
- Echoes peaked only at no2 but had still sold 100 000 by year end 2001 (second biggest seller for 2001) - and must have continued so sell in high volumes until then
-Dark side keep appearing at the lower end of Top 40 on a regular basis, was no 16 as recently as this summer (when Waters played a gig in Oslo), and the 30 year edition reached no 7 in 2003.

the "Pulse" DVD was certified 2x Platinum (100k - should be Diamond) in Brasil :o and it's a very expensive DVD, only import copies are available in stores

Hi Automatic

Do you have any other sales info for Floyd from Brazil?

It's very hard to gauge from the UK.

On the Rolling Stones thread Fedepeti came up with really surprising information on the popularity of the Stones in Argentina - just their chart performance there was amazing.

I don't believe Floyd ever played in Brazil (could be wrong).

In so many other countries from Canada to France and the UK/USA and Australia, we see that albums like Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall are still selling extremely well. So good, in fact, that they often sell the equivalent of a GOLD album most years in these countries.

How are these albums regarded in Brazil? Are they very popular or just marginal?

Would be most interested in any information you may have.

Cheers - Basil

Well a UK figure for Dark Side of the Moon - without record club sales

3,759,958

On this alone it should be 12xPlatinum.

But is was certified recently for only 9xPlatinum. :o :o

What the hell is going on with this UK List???

Oh, and apparently The Wall and Wish You Were Here sold less than 1.6m

I'm surprised how even an album as uneventful as The Final Cut has scanned nearly 800k since Soundscn, while a lot of major sellers from the period have done far less in the Soundscan age
