Thanks for the list borderwolf.

This album has always been a mystery to me - never saw in the shops, it didn't chart and yet is a Gold album.

Anyone have a tracklisting or anything?

The collaboration Ridin' With the King shipped 100,000 to complete your list.

No certifications for pre-1973 stuff of course. :(

Why can't the BPI get it's act together for one of the world's biggest music markets.

really shocking how his sales have taken a hit over the past decade. Went from 7.4 million with the Unplugged album to 165k for Back Home? I've never been a fan of his but you'd think his legendary status would help his albums sell better than that, especially considering how successful he was in the 1990's.

This album must have sold a LOT through record clubs. It's now at 7,505,000 according to Hanboo's list. But when certified in 1996 it probably scanned less than 7m, meaning 3m was likely through clubs!

A bit surprising that Cream haven't done better saleswise. Legendary status well in place.

The 165k for Back Home is from early in its release so may be a bit misleading.

His latest one with JJ Cale is over 400k.

His soundscan total of 28m since 1991 is pretty impressive - more than Elton, Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney who are his contemporaries.

But sales of his studio albums have been going down, so you're certainly right there.

They were on Polydor who seem to be the worst label in terms of getting riaa certs done.

Examples - The Bee Gees and Grease! :D

So I reckon the shipments are undercooked for sales in the 60's and 70's.

Of course by the soundscan era they are a bit old hat. 15 minute guitar solos not popular. I bet at least half of the 2.2m is compilations of their short singles type tracks.

But yes, I would have expected a bit more - they are very low on the 1m to 15m list at the bottom of Page One.

One final point is that they do feature on Eric's compilations which sell well - like The Cream Of. Also their very best tracks feature on the Crossroads Box Set - one of the best selling box sets ever. Perhaps if people have these tracks they don't need any actual Cream albums.

oh ok, I was thinking after two years he only sold 165k and was shocked just how low that was considering Clapton seemed to have a solid fanbase, but after what you said, it was probably an early figure. I know the days of Unplugged, or even From The Cradle (which sold exceptionally well considering there was not a single or video to push it) are behind him, but at least Reptile numbers make sense.

I mean, if it sold enough to go gold, that's reasonable considering he hasn't really scored a hit since Change The World, but his sales till now have been reasonable for his age and contemporaries.

Thanks for the good words :)

Interesting comments again. I've taken a look, and yes his sales of new albums seem to have settled around the 500,000 mark.

Of course the many compilations still do very well.

But his soundscan total again. Nearly 28m. This doesn't include collaborations or soundtracks. So looks like the JJ Cale album and Rush soundtrack don't count.

Compare this 28m with 31.4m for U2 which have been a mega-band in the soundscan era. He's not very far behind.....

He is 21st on the soundscan list, but the artists above him are mostly

- The big selling female singers since 1991
- Modern big bands like Metallica/U2
- Big selling new country artists who have had loads of hit albums like Alan Jackson/Tim McGraw

So in that context his total seems better and better. Add on Cream and his collaboration albums....

Finally consider his sales from 1970 to 1991, plus whatever he sold in the 60's with John Mayall, The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie.

Some of them. The hitlist swedish site which published charts from 93 to now point out certifications in their chart, like in Spain or in the USA.
