Four tracks remain in the same position this month as they occupied in November - and three of them are in the top five, including the instrumental that entered at number one for Ten Walls, “Walking With Elephants”. The strongest challenger to replace that at the beginning of 2015, however, could be another of last month’s newcomers - Sam Smith, who races up twelve places into the runner-up spot. “I’m Not The Only One” is this month’s Rapid Riser - and just five other hits are upwardly mobile this time. Joining him in the top ten are Rita Ora, up four places to number eight with “I Will Never Let You Go”, and Sia, advancing nine places to number ten with “Chandelier” - while former Chartbuster “Koala” climbs three spots to number twelve for Oliver Heldens, and “Beautiful Life” continues to rise, moving up another eight places to 28 for Armin Van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma. Tom Odell rebounds four places, returning to his previous number 23 peak with the Zwette remix of “Another Love” - and one of this month’s four brand new entries is just above him at 22. “Break Free” is a third success for Zedd, but only a first for the 21-year-old Florida-born Ariana Grande. A younger singer from Lincolnshire, 18-year-old Ella Henderson, makes a higher debut, arriving at number sixteen with November’s Chartbuster “Glow” - while an older one, 27-year-old Tove Lo from Stockholm, Sweden, just manages to sneak in at number 40 with “Stay High”. The only new entry from an act with previous successes - five of them, including number one “Anger Never Dies” - is at 37, as “Boomerang” becomes the sixth hit out of eight breakers for Belgian group Hooverphonic. All of this leaves twenty-six tracks on the way down - including all four hits in the current chart from Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Even her top three entry from November, “The Deer And The Wolf”, already slides three spots to number six - while “Young Blood” is this month’s fastest faller, diving eleven places to number 32. Four places below that is the longest laster, as “Panic Cord” survives for a sixteenth appearance for Gabrielle Aplin, sliding just one place.

Only one of the seven tracks appearing for the first time in the breakers this month is from an act that has never previously impressed me - the Veronicas, Australian twin sisters Lisa and Jessica Origliasso. Their new single “You Ruin Me” strikes me as a vast improvement over their previous material, although it seems unlikely to become as widespread and enduring a hit as their previous UK top ten success and Ireland number one “Untouched”. French singer Zaz didn’t make it through the breakers into my top forty with “Je Veux” - but perhaps she will in the months ahead with “Champs Elysses”. Another French performer doubles his chances of a ninth hit - having arrived with “Lovers On The Sun” last month, David Guetta now also appears with “Dangerous”. Three of his other tracks reached number one in my chart, whereas Fritz Kalkbrenner was only there once - together with his brother Paul, on Germany’s most charted hit of all time, “Sky And Sand”. His latest success is “Back Home”, currently in the top twenty there - and the Eurovision Song Contest runner-up by the Common Linnets is yet to drop out of the German top fifty. “Calm After The Storm” peaked at number two in my chart - and they could be about to follow that up with “Give Me A Reason”. The ninth breaker for Calvin Harris is his second on which he has paired up with Ellie Goulding - and, as the first, “I Need Your Love”, was the only one that has so far gone on to reach my top forty, perhaps “Outside” has better prospects of getting there than his other current breakers “Summer” and “Blame”. If it does, it would be the third success for the 27-year-old singer/songwriter from Hertfordshire, as “Starry Eyed” previously peaked for her at number seven. However, the driving force behind this month’s new Chartbuster has beaten that by reaching a number two peak with the first of nine previous appearances in my top forty. Just one of these - “The Rain” - was under his own name as a solo artist, the others all being credited to the Eurodance group that has been his main project for over a decade. They have had several successes around the continent, some of which have even charted in the UK - and the name of this latest project is only slightly different ! The performer is Peter Luts, the group was Lasgo - and my Record of the Month for December 2014 is Larco, with the instrumental “Andes”.

Thanks ! I believe I did find the last three when I presented my Top 400 of the first 400 charts, a couple of years ago - but I don't think I have ever searched again for the first two. It's good that even some of the more obscure tracks from the earlier years of my charts are eventually appearing on YouTube ! :D

I should probably take this opportunity to mention that, with a lot of work on the UKmixParade of 2014 for me to do in the week ahead, my new chart may be delayed more than a little beyond the opening minutes of 2015 ! Unfortunately, for me this really seems to have been a desperately poor month for new music, so there may be as few as three new breakers and two new hits . . . . . :cry:

CZB, can you post any full retro charts ?
Mostly I have the interest in late 70s and 80s lists.

I've already posted annual lists for every year from 1975 until 2011 somewhere in this thread, and five-year lists extending to some earlier periods - there's a full index in the first post on page one !

If you mean the original monthly charts, maybe I could so some mid-month postings of old editions of these in 2015 . . . . . I'll have to think about how that might be best achieved.

Now, 2015 is fast approaching - or, for readers in some parts of the world, it's already here ! - so, just a little ahead of time, so that I can go and celebrate the new year, here now is my first chart of that new year . . . . .

Number one thirty-three years ago: WHEN YOU WERE SWEET SIXTEEN The Fureys and Davey Arthur
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Six hits remain in exactly the same position in my first chart of 2015 as in the last one of 2014 - including four of the top five. The only track losing its place there is Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap”, sliding three spots to number seven - so it’s a third month at the top for Ten Walls, and “Walking With Elephants”. That’s now one of five instrumentals inside the top twenty (although two of the others have had vocals added for certain territories!), because last month’s Chartbuster, “Andes” from Larco, is one of three new entries, arriving at number 13. This is a Belgian act, while the main credits on the other two new debuts go to Germans. Fritz Kalkbrenner previously reached number one in my top forty together with his brother Paul on “Sky And Sand” - and his new solo single, “Back Home”, comes in at 32. However, Robin Schulz crashes straight in at number four with the follow-up to his massive hit remix of Lilly Wood and the Prick’s “Prayer In C”. With vocals by 14-year-old Londoner Jasmine Thompson, “Sun Goes Down” looks like a strong contender for next month’s number one. Meanwhile, there are just seven climbers in the top forty this time - including Rita Ora, Sia and Armin Van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma, who all continue to advance in their fourth month in the chart with “I Will Never Let You Go”, “Chandelier” and “Beautiful Life” respectively. And the other four upwardly mobile tracks were all new entries in December. Ella Henderson only advances one place to 15 with “Glow”, while “Stay High” sneaks up just two position to 38 for Tove Lo featuring Hippie Sabotage - but there’s better progress for Ariana Grande featuring Zedd, up six at 16 with “Break Free”, and for Hooverphonic. They have this month’s Rapid Riser, as “Boomerang” moves from 37 to 26. Hopefully it won’t live up to its title and bounce back down eleven spots next month!
Among twenty-four hits descending, “Panic Cord” is still the longest laster, sliding one place to 37 for Gabrielle Aplin after seventeen months - and for the second month running, Sophie Ellis-Bextor has the fastest faller. However, this time it’s her most recent arrival, “The Deer And The Wolf”, that takes an eight-place dive out of the top ten to number 14. And it’s been another rather poor month for new music, with just four potential future hits entering the top forty breakers. David Guetta’s domination of the bottom end of that chart becomes even greater, as a third track from his latest album “Listen” joins those that have arrived in the past two months - “Lovers On The Sun” and “Dangerous”. However, instead of Sam Martin, it’s Emeli Sande who sings on this new one, “What I Did For Love”. From the Netherlands, Anouk reached number one in my chart in 2013 with her beautiful Eurovision Song Contest entry “Birds” - and she has now released a follow-up album from which the most recent hit single in her homeland was “Places To Go”. That could give her a second success in my chart in the months ahead - while French singer/songwriter Heloise Letissier could be on the way there for the first time. Her synthpop music/performance art project, “Christine And The Queens” is currently in the top thirty in France and top ten in Belgium with “Christine”. But this month’s Chartbuster, the guaranteed new entry in February’s top forty, has already been a hit in many more countries all over the world - including the UK, where it recently spent two weeks at number fourteen. It’s from a 63-year-old Los Angeles-born composer with dozens of successful film soundtracks stretching back for decades, and is sung by a 24-year-old actress from Kentucky. From the soundtrack of the recent film, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1”, my Record of the Month for January 2015 is James Newton Howard featuring Jennifer Lawrence, and “The Hanging Tree”.
I watched your annual lists. Yes, my request was about the original monthly charts.
Thanks for answer.
Mostly I have the interest in late 70s and 80s lists.
Right . . . . . I've now finally worked out how to move "randomly" ( as if ! ) through the monthly charts of my earliest years, posting at least one in full ( and usually, hopefully, two ) during each month, between the latest charts right at the beginning of each month. The "bad" news is that I don't believe I'm going to ever find time to write an accompanying chart commentary - but the "good" news is that I hope to still adopt the usual fully YouTube-linked format, so that anyone can easily check out some of the (potentially quite obscure) tracks that I was buying a few decades ago. I'm going to set aside two, or two and a half, or three hours to play all the hits from these links - depending on the length of my chart. It began as a top thirty in the summer of 1979, expanded briefly to a top forty in 1982 and then became a top fifty during 1983 - remaining this length until 1992, when the current approach of a top forty plus top forty breakers from positions 41 to 125 started.
I hope these extra mid-month retro charts will prove to be interesting snapshots of my (strange?) tastes in music during my high school, university and full-time working years (as some readers will already know, I took "early retirement" at the age of 28 in 1992). However, the vast majority of the tracks that I charted were - as indeed they still are nowadays - those that I had heard in the radio chart shows of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and progressively more countries of Western Europe. Others came from the Eurovision Song Contest or television programmes generally ( I bought quite a lot of TV theme singles back then ! ). It's still possible, though, that some are just too obscure for anyone to have posted on YouTube. Indeed, two of the top fifty in this first selected retro chart fell into that category - but the other forty-eight fitted perfectly into a very interesting three-hour trip down memory lane for me this afternoon.
Pausing only to mention that back then, by and large, every single I bought during a month would be a new entry in the next month's chart - hence the arrival and presence of several that I never managed to find in the bargain bins when they were first released, but only picked up maybe a few years later - let's now begin these retro charts with the countdown from exactly twenty-nine years ago :
Only one of the hits in the first chart of 2015 has remained in the same position in the second - and that’s “Into The Blue” by Kylie Minogue, at number ten. So, after three months at the top, “Walking With Elephants” from Ten Walls is among twenty-five tracks dropping down, sliding to number three - and the new number one is for 22-year-old London-born Sam Smith. Although he had previously had two chart-toppers in the UK, “I’m Not The Only One” is the only one of his tracks to impress me so far - while Robin Schulz was involved with two of my top five last month, including the highest new entry. One of just eight other climbers this time, “Sun Goes Down” moves up into the runner-up spot, sung by Jasmine Thompson. “Clarity” had previously peaked there, and “Stay The Night” reached number three - so now “Break Free” becomes a third consecutive top five success for Zedd, racing up eleven places to number five. And “Back Home” is now the first solo top ten success for Fritz Kalkbrenner, who had previously gone all the way to number one together with his brother Paul with “Sky And Sand”. It’s this month’s Rapid Riser, zooming up twenty-three places to number nine - while there are more modest upward moves for Hooverphonic, Larco, Sia and Armin Van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma. Meanwhile, Tove Lo is accelerating with “Stay High”, advancing seven places to 31 in her third month - but is largely surrounded by tracks heading down and out, including the longest laster and fastest faller. These are, respectively, “Odd Look” from Kavinsky featuring the Weeknd, sliding two spots at 35 - and “Nobody To Love” by Sigma, diving sixteen places to 39.
All of this leaves room for five brand new entries - and only one of them is by an act who has made any previous top forty appearances. That’s Lodewijk Fluttert, better known as Bakermat - a Dutchman who has already done well with former Chartbusters “Vandaag” and “Zomer”, and now sneaks in at 40 with another mostly instrumental track, “Uitzicht”. Two of the other new arrivals are from French acts, and both are performed in French - “Champs Elysees” by Zaz at 38, and “Christine” from Christine and The Queens at 22 - while the two most impressive debuts are all-American. The 21-year-old singer/songwriter Meghan Trainor enters at number 17 - but not with her massive seller “All About That Bass” or the follow-up single “Lips Are Movin”. I struggle to see the merit or appeal in either of these - instead, her new entry is “Title”, the very much more tuneful title track from her first album. Two places higher than that - and currently at number one in Germany, having already been there in Austria - is last month’s Chartbuster, the movie soundtrack hit “The Hanging Tree”, by James Newton Howard featuring Jennifer Hudson.
Six new potential future hits appear in the top forty breakers this month - and, in contrast with the new entries in the chart, all but one are from acts with at least one former success! Belgian DJ/producer Felix De Laet has recently been at number one in his homeland, and is now climbing the charts in France, with “Are You With Me”, credited to Lost Frequencies - that could become his first hit in my chart in the months ahead. Pitbull has already scored two successes, both alongside Jennifer Lopez, with “On The Floor” and “Dance Again”, and has now joined forces with John Ryan on “Fireball” - while Meghan Trainor could soon double her presence with another album track, “Dear Future Husband”. Avicii has charted ten times so far - albeit using a different name for two of them - and his current UK top ten hit “The Nights” could be the eleventh. He reached number one in my chart with “Collide” / “Fade Into Darkness” / “Penguin” - and, although Madonna has never risen higher than number four, she does have twenty-five previous top forty entries. “Living For Love”, the first single from her upcoming new album “Rebel Heart”, may soon become another. Curiously, one of her other hits has the very same title as one of the three previous hits for the act who, as this month’s Chartbuster, is guaranteed to have a new entry in March. She’s a 29-year-old Welsh singer/songwriter whose most recent success was June 2012’s Chartbuster “Primadonna” - and two years earlier, she had simultaneous top ten hits with “I Am Not A Robot” and . . . . . “Hollywood”, which peaked at number seven, six places higher than Madonna’s different song with the same name. My Record of the Month for February 2015 is Marina and the Diamonds, with “Froot”.
Thanks, Benny and Tansike - both "Froot" and "Title" could potentially go top ten next month ! :D
Time now for the second instalment in the new series of retro charts - and a two-and-a-quarter hour trip back in time to this month of thirty-two years ago. I was in my first year at university, and I had Thursday mornings free, so I had recently discovered the PolderPopParade and Dutch-Language Top Ten on TROS-Hilversum 3 (but not yet any of the full-length Dutch chart shows in the afternoons) - and the Europarade ! Several hits from those charts therefore joined those from the UK and Ireland - and here's the full countdown:
It wasn't until a few years later that I discovered that "Fantasy Island" had originally been submitted as a potential Dutch Eurovision entry, by the Millionaires - it could have done quite well !
Now, another retro chart - this time, from probably my busiest working month ever, twenty-five years ago this month, in which my time-sheet recorded more than 300 hours. That's over ten and a half hours a day, seven days a week ! However, I somehow found time for my usual monthly chart - and I had begun to make a determined effort to obtain the continental and UK hits that had previously eluded me. So there seem to be quite a few "older" songs in this month's chart - including the close-to-six-minutes number one, which was easy to find on YouTube, unlike the rest of the top three. Unfortunately, the seven-inch single version of the runner-up (including a sample of the "Blue Danube" music) is nowhere there - only remixes are available - and the only version of the number three appears to be a phone recording of the song being sung live at some kind of concert ! However, despite some rather obscure tracks further down, the only one impossible to find was the number 43 - all of the rest were there, making up a three and a quarter hour trip back in time this afternoon to:
Oh yes ! That peaked at number eleven in October 2000, which was just after it was a hit in the UK. It had made a slow climb through the breakers - first appearing there in December 1999, when I originally became aware of it in the charts in continental Europe:
112 112 94 94 70 56 52 22 14 12 11 22 28 48 54 59 66 76 84
In my all-time list, it's several hundred places below Madonna's original version - which had gone on to reach a peak of number six. Very few of her other tracks ever beat this !
In February’s chart, “I’m Not The Only One” by Sam Smith became my 212th number one - and it’s been quite an award-winning month for the 22-year-old Londoner ! However, that’s now one of twenty-seven hits moving down, landing at number five - and he makes way for a younger act to take over, in the form of fourteen-year-old Jasmine Thompson. Her collaboration with the somewhat older German DJ and producer Robin Schulz, “Sun Goes Down”, has already reached the top three in Austria, Switzerland and Germany, and now climbs one place to pole position in my chart. There are only eight other tracks moving up this time - but two of them make major advances into the top three, and either of these could potentially become the next chart-topper. “Christine” from Christine and the Queens has recently been Belgium’s best-selling single, and races up nineteen places from its number 22 debut last month - while the Rapid Riser is also sung in French, by jazz singer/songwriter Zaz. “Champs Elysees”, from her current album celebrating the capital city of her homeland, arrived at number 38 in February - but it now races up an incredible thirty-six places to the runner-up spot.
Elsewhere, there are much more modest moves for Ariana Grande featuring Zedd, Fritz Kalkbrenner, James Newton Howard featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Hooverphonic and Tove Lo - while Meghan Trainor makes it into the top ten with an nine-place climb for “Title”. That’s now at number eight, two spots above the highest of only three brand new entries this month, from Marina and The Diamonds. The former Chartbuster “Froot” arrives at number ten, giving the Welsh musician her fourth success - while the fourth breaker for Emeli Sande becomes the first to enter the top forty for her. “What I Did For Love” received a considerable sales boost this month in the UK by being featured in the live episode marking the thirtieth anniversary of the soap opera “EastEnders”, and is the eighth David Guetta hit collaboration, crashing in at number 20. Two of the others previously came straight in at number one, in consecutive months of 2011 - “Titanium” and “Without You” - whereas Anouk was there more recently with her first hit. “Birds” perched on the top rung in June and July 2013 - and she now follows up that Eurovision Song Contest entry with “Places To Go”, navigating its way in at number 30. Nothing below that is upwardly mobile, with the bottom ten of the chart including the fastest faller, “Glow” by Ella Henderson . . . . . the longest laster, “Odd Look” from Kavinsky featuring the Weeknd . . . . . and the only non-mover this time - “Uitzicht” by Bakermat, which spends a second month at number 40.
Monmouthshire-born Steven John Harrington became well-known using the stage-name Steve Strange - especially as the lead singer and frontman of the new wave/pop/punk band Visage. Sadly, he died unexpectedly this month, following a heart attack at the age of fifty-five - only a few months after the release of a collection of orchestral remixes of one of their most successful hits, “Fade To Grey”. This could return to my chart in the months ahead, having originally peaked at number 37 - reappearing in the top forty breakers higher than any of this month’s six new possible future hits. Just one of them is by an act impressing me for the first time - Norwegian electronic dance duo Broiler with “Wild Eyes” - while another is currently at number one both in the UK and in several other countries for Ellie Goulding. “Love Me Like You Do” could become her third success in my top forty. The other four acts with new breakers are all there already ! Zaz, Armin Van Buuren, Marina and the Diamonds, and Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne could all double their presence, with “Sous Le Ciel De Paris”, “Save My Night”, “Happy” and “Real Love” respectively - but none of them is sufficiently close to the chart to be guaranteed a place there next time. “Real Love” is nearest, but is only at number 120 - so even that cannot give the Cambridge graduates their fourth Chartbuster. Instead, it’s the first for 30-year-old identical twin Australians Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, with the lead single from their third album. This briefly hit the top ten in the UK - and, by virtue of making the biggest climb into the 41-100 region of my extended chart, moving from 103 to 71, it is now certain to enter my top forty in April. My Record of the Month for March 2015 is “You Ruin Me”, by the Veronicas.
That's a relatively quick mover on your chart for Madonna. :lol: :wink:
"Happy" to see Marina chasing herself. Hope more "Froots" enter over the months ahead. :wink:
