~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Number one seven years ago: DISCO VOLANTE Ida Engberg
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Number one seventeen years ago: LA PRIMAVERA Sash!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Number one twenty-seven years ago: LONELY IN LONDON The Fureys and Davey Arthur
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It has been just over ten years since my number one was a track recorded in German only - the previous one, in June 2005, was Joy Gruttmann with “Schnappi, Das Kleine Krokodile”. Now, the 214th chart-topper is for the duo consisting of Berlin’s Philipp Dittberner and Hannover’s Marv(in Webb), a recent top ten success in both Germany and Austria. “Wolke 4” climbs seven places from its number eight debut last time, just beating the hit that had arrived one place higher for Felix Jaehn featuring Jasmine Thompson. “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)” has, however, reached number one in both of these countries - plus the Netherlands. Completing the top three is one of just three non-movers in this month’s top forty, the recent UK number one “Are You With Me” by Lost Frequencies - while just below that is another of the ten hits moving up. Madonna matches her previous best ever peak of number four, achieved by “Take A Bow” and “Celebration”, with “GhostTown”. But the Rapid Riser this time is a Dutch chart-topper from much earlier this year - Galantis race from 36 to 14 with “Runaway (U And I)”.

Although “Happy” gives Marina And The Diamonds a fourth top ten success, “Froot” is the fastest faller for a second consecutive month, diving another ten places to 29. And twenty-three other hits heading downwards include joint longest lasters side by side, both making their thirteenth appearances - “Love Is A Camera” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor at 35 and “Prayer In C” from Lilly Wood and the Prick at 36. These two are sandwiched in between two new entries involving the same artist - Ellie Goulding. The Hereford-born 28-year-old had previously only had one solo hit, “Starry Eyed”, and one hit collaboration with Calvin Harris, “I Need Your Love”. But now she doubles her tally with one more of each - “Love Me Like You Do” and “Outside” at 37 and 34 respectively. Meanwhile, the third and highest new entry is the tenth hit for the 38-year-old Dutch DJ and producer Armin Van Buuren. All of the other nine have reached the top twenty - and “Another You”, featuring vocals by Mr Probz, instantly does that too, as July’s Chartbuster crashes in at number 19.

Returning to the breakers is a track that only reached number 74 following its original release two years ago, but may rise higher now - “Wings” from Birdy, which has recently become a top ten success in the UK as a result of its use in an advertising campaign for the major British bank Lloyds. But, in a poor month for new music, I have only been able to identify three other potential future hits. One of these could be a first solo success for fourteen-year-old Jasmine Thompson, who has already reached number one in my chart alongside Robin Schulz with ”Sun Goes Down”. That’s “Adore” - while the Chemical Brothers are still awaiting a first hit, as their two previous breakers, both from 2007, fell some way short. “Do It Again” peaked at 55 and “The Salmon Dance” at 105 - but perhaps “Go” will do better in the months ahead. And it’s a guaranteed second top forty hit in September for the brand new Chartbuster from 21-year-old Brussels-born producer and DJ Felix De Laet, which has already topped the chart in his homeland - and also in Austria and Germany. It could go on to achieve similar success elsewhere too - maybe eventually even in the UK ! My Record of the Month for August 2015 is Lost Frequencies featuring Janieck Devy, with “Reality”.

Great to see "Ain't Nobody" climbing up to #2, great cover :)

Also good to see Madonna, David Guetta & Emeli Sandé and Marina in the Top10.

I'm surprised about the late entry for "Outside" by Calvin and Ellie, but better late than never, as this is another good song :)

That may yet climb to number one - although I'll be more interested to see how it gets on when / if properly released in the UK. Some sources suggest that this is meant to happen soon . . . . .

With major single sales success in the UK only for the David Guetta / Emeli Sande track (mainly following its use in a very popular soap opera), I'm really quite surprised that this just isn't happening for either Madonna or Marina now. The music buyers, downloaders and streamers here seem to have turned them both pretty much into "albums chart" acts !

Several hits have taken even longer to work their way up the breakers before charting (every new breaker is allowed to remain for up to twelve months before being excluded) - although this one has indeed done a slow climb, 121-117-110-103-102-99-94-87-34 !

Now, a third of the way through August, it's time for another retro chart - from the dim and distant past when I was seventeen years old, and awaiting the results of my tenth "O" level and first "A" level. No doubt there was also revision and other work to do in the summer holidays, as I was also half-way though my studies for further "A" levels - but on Sundays I never missed the UK charts with Tony Blackburn and the Irish ones with Larry Gogan. Virtually all of the tracks in my own chart - then still just a top thirty - were hits in one or both of these countries. Even the German Eurovision Song Contest entry, which gave them a second place for a second year running, reached the top half of Ireland's Top Thirty - and, as can be seen below, went much higher in mine! Unusually, nothing here was too obscure to be available now on YouTube - although I had to choose several of the longer versions on offer to get today's trip back in time to last for almost a full two hours ! Here, then, are my favourites from thirty-four years ago this month . . . . .

To be honest i didn't know it wasn't released in the UK yet. And i was surprised it didn't do better there :o

Yes, and that's a sad thing IMO, because both deserve to get a single hit as well, especially with their entries!

At least it finally managed to get an entry :D

Thanks, Benny - those are probably the ones that made the biggest impact in continental Europe as well.

The Aneka song, for reasons now lost in the mists of time, returned to my chart several times after its initial run - it eventually built up a grand total of seventeen months, one of the longest lasters that didn't ever reach my top ten !

Now, it's very nearly two-thirds of the way through August, and time for another retro chart. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this one is from almost the only year not yet visited since I began this very meandering journey through the early years (1979 to 1991) of my monthly favourites ! In case any one was wondering, there is an underlying rationale for the choices and sequences of years selected such that (eventually) all months should be covered. It took me a while to plan it all out - but I suspect that we may actually already have reached the stage where the years due to be featured in the rest of 2015 can be correctly guessed based on the ones previously picked !

Anyway, it's August 1988 - and back then I was working hard ( or maybe I was on holiday for some or most of the month, I can't remember now ) at the start of my second year as an audit senior. And I was listening regularly to the charts of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and (when possible) Germany. Plus, of course, the Europarade - and I think I was just beginning to obtain some of those excellent continental hits that had eluded me for up to half a decade. Along with the usual smattering of Eurovision entries (not necessarily of the "current" year) and television themes/soundtracks, here's the full chart of twenty-seven years ago that formed a three-hour YouTube trip back in time for me today . . . . .

Thanks, Benny ! :D

I think it was established in the German charts thread a while ago that, with that song, France Gall took the longest time ever to have a number one there after her first success (probably her Eurovision winner from decades earlier).

Curiously, some kind of "remix" of it was released as a single in the UK - but that flopped completely !

More recently, Kate Ryan's cover version reached number one in my chart - but, at 320 in my all-time ranking, is only twenty-one places higher than France Gall's original, at 341. That had gone on to peak at number three.

Half an hour early - but it's another month, another new chart - and, I fear, another apology is required for a serious lack both of new hits and new breakers ! Where has all the good new music gone these days . . . . .?.

Four hits from my chart of August 2015 remain in exactly the same positions in September. Right at the bottom, Bakermat continue to rewrite the record books by spending an eighth consecutive month at number 40 with “Uitzicht” . . . . . Robin Schulz and Ilsey are stuck at number 11 for a third month, as “Headlights” can’t progress any higher without a vinyl release . . . . . and the top two are unchanged, with “Wolke 4” by Philipp Dittberner and Marv in pole position, while Felix Jaehn featuring Jasmine Thompson are still the runners-up with “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)”. However, the 21st birthday of the Hamburg-born DJ and producer very recently coincided with this single racing up to number two in the UK charts - which must also make the 14-year-old singer from London one of the very youngest performers to achieve such a high position in her homeland, thirty places higher than her song peaked two years ago when originally recorded. The remix has already reached number one in several countries - including Germany, where it topped the chart for eight weeks. And a single that spent two of those weeks at a peak of number two there is now the higher of just two new entries in my top forty - Sarah Connor crashes straight in at number three with “So Schon Du Bist”. That instantly becomes the biggest hit for the 35-year-old singer and songwriter - “From Sarah With Love” reached number 13, and “Skin On Skin” peaked one place lower - and it seems quite possible that one German-language song could be replaced by another as my number one next time! The other new entry is August’s Chartbuster from Lost Frequencies featuring Janieck Devy - “Reality”, in at number 13. The Belgian DJ and producer’s second single has performed even better in his homeland than his first since its release twelve weeks ago - so far spending five weeks at number one and seven weeks at number two ! “Are You With Me” seems to have peaked at number three in my chart - that now slides two places to number five, and is one of twenty-four tracks moving down this month. The others include the fastest faller - “Sun Goes Down”, diving ten places to 22 for the aforementioned Robin Schulz and Jasmine Thompson - and the joint longest lasters “Love Is A Camera” and “Prayer In C”, dropping three places each to 38 and 39 for Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Lilly Wood and the Prick.

All of this leaves ten tracks moving upwards this time - and a climb of eight places from its very belated number 34 debut in August to number 26 makes “Outside” by Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding the Rapid Riser ! Ellie’s other new entry from last month, “Love Me Like You Do”, very nearly matched that with a seven-place climb to number 30 - and Meghan Trainor also advances seven spots with “Dear Future Husband”. Her second official single, still hanging around the upper end of the charts in Austria some time after dropping much further elsewhere, now stands at number 10, giving the 21-year-old from Massachusetts her second top ten success in my chart. The first is still there - “Title” falls four at nine - and now a third could be on the way, as her collaboration with Charlie Puth, “Marvin Gaye”, is one of just three potential future hits arriving in my top forty breakers this month. Another is a track that also recently achieved a high entry in the UK chart - “Intoxicated” by Martin Solveig and GTA. The 38-year-old French DJ and producer spent five months at number one in my chart at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 with “Hello” - an impressive total that no-one has since equalled. However, at 125 in the extended chart, he has a long way to go to repeat that - and so does the most promising new breaker, just four places higher for 17-year-old Zara Larsson. “Uncover” reached number one in her Swedish homeland and in Norway two years ago, but has only recently spread to some other countries and come to my attention. So, it’s one of those rare months in which none of the brand new breakers are sufficiently close to the top forty to be guaranteed a place there - and the new Chartbuster is the highest climber into the top 100. Moving up forty-two places to number 75, it’s the fourth Chartbuster for a 25-year-old DJ, producer and remixer from Stockholm, Sweden - and is a single currently experiencing widespread success, even recently spending two weeks in the UK top ten. My Record of the Month for September 2015 is Avicii, and “Waiting For Love”.

Good entry for Lost Frequencies' "Reality", and good to see Passenger in the Top20 & "Break Free" still in the Top40 :)

Indeed - it's the only top three new entry of 2015 so far ! The last time it happened was in November 2014, when Ten Walls came straight in at number one . . . . .

I hadn't really registered that it was such a German-artists dominated top three ! However, perhaps the "featured" presence of Jasmine Thompson prevents that country from being the only one represented. I've just had a look back at all the previous months to see if this has ever happened before, and now I'm pretty sure it hasn't. The most promising months were a couple from the mid-90s in which there were two Masterboy tracks and one from E-Rotic in my top three - but although both acts were Germany-based, it appears that neither of the main performers in the latter one were actually German . . . . .

We're a third of the way through the month already - so it's time for the first retro chart for September. And this is almost certainly one that I compiled just over thirty years ago, a few days before the end of August - as, at the age of twenty-one, I was about to embark on the great (and probably frightening) adventure of starting work for the first time. And, no doubt, I was making sure that all the timer switches I had bought would work properly to record all of the various radio chart shows in my absence !

Pretty much everything in this month's chart was a hit in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands or other parts of Europe - and, for possibly the first time since I began this series of revisitations, all of the top fifty were available on YouTube ! Unusually, there aren't any stray Abba tracks around - although the duo Bonnie and Jose are here with a couple of Dutch cover versions of their songs - and nothing in the chart had first appeared earlier than seven months previously (February of the same year). I doubt that I would have thought then that, thirty years later, the majority of hits would stay around longer than that, and I'd be doing well to find more than about three or four worthy new entries in a typical month. Anyway, here are all my favourites from September 1985 . . . . .

Thanks, Benny - I always thought it strange that "All At Once", surely a stand-out track from Whitney Houston's 1985 album, was released as a single in very few territories. I only knew of its major success in Belgium and the Netherlands - but it appears that it was otherwise made available only in Italy and Japan !

And it's already time for the second retro chart of this month - for this one, it's a return to almost the very start. I was fifteen, I had just entered the fifth form at school having passed "O" Level Maths, and was studying for eight more the following year. On Sundays, however, I was tuning in to the chart shows of the UK and Ireland, from which came most of what was in only the second month of my own chart ! It was only a top thirty originally - and one of this month's top thirty, from Caitriona Walsh, is not on YouTube, despite reaching number one in Ireland and being sung to the Pope. So, to expand today's journey back in time to a full two hours, I added a few bonus tracks from the first chart, that dropped out of the second but were "probably" close to the top thirty. So here's what I was enjoying all of thirty-six years ago - before the majority of members of this forum were even born ! - back in September 1979 . . . . .

Thanks, Benny ! Boney M really dominated my early charts - very few other acts ever had as many as six simultaneous hits. You'll know that in the UK and Ireland "Voulez-Vous" was a double-A-side single with "Angel Eyes" - curiously, it was always the former that was played in the weekly Irish radio chart show and always the latter in the UK radio chart show ! That was the one and only appearance of "Voulez-Vous" in my chart, however - and "Angel Eyes" didn't really impress me at all . . . . .

Those three tracks were all prevented from entering the top ten last time because they were not released on vinyl - however, I received all three of them on vinyl today, so they will be fully eligible to climb there in my October chart next week. There could be quite a shake-up of my top five - and will one of these former Chartbusters become my new number one . . . . . ?

In September, Sarah Connor looked like the strongest contender for October’s number one, as “So Schon Du Bist” crashed straight in at number three. However, it is now one of four non-movers - the others including “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)”, spending a third month in the runner-up spot for Felix Jaehn featuring Jasmine Thompson. The 14-year-old from London spent two months in pole position earlier this year together with the German producer Robin Schulz - and he now returns to the top with “Headlights”, on which the vocals are provided by Ilsey Juber, its co-writer. The former Chartbuster races up ten places to become my 215th chart-topper - but, among ten other climbers, Lost Frequencies replace one top five hit with another. The second number one in his homeland for the Belgian DJ Felix De Laat, “Reality”, advances nine places to number four - and could be a future number one in my chart too ! Completing the top five, last month’s number one falls four places for Philipp Dittberner and Marv - although there is already a follow-up hit to “Wolke 4” in Germany. Twenty-three other tracks on the way down include “Title” by Meghan Trainor - the fastest faller of the month dives nine places at 18 - while the longest laster clings on in for a fifteenth appearance, and a second at number 39, for Lilly Wood and the Prick - “Prayer In C”. That was a UK number one - and so was Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do”, which is this month’s Rapid Riser, moving up fifteen places to number 15.

All of this means that there is just one new entry in the top forty - September’s Chartbuster from Avicii, “Waiting For Love” arrives at number 24. And another track from his upcoming new album “Stories” is among five brand new breakers - “For A Better Day”. Two of the other potential future hits identified this month are by acts impressing me for the first time - R.City featuring Adam Levine are already doing well in several countries with “Locked Away”, while American performer Madilyn Bailey’s recent success with a cover version of David Guetta’s “Titanium” is rather more limited so far, only being embraced in France and Belgium. Meanwhile, Robin Schulz already has a follow-up to the new number one “Headlines” in the form of “Sugar” - on which the vocals are provided by 20-year-old Canadian Francesco Yates. However, the brand new Chartbuster, guaranteed to be a new entry in my November top forty, is for a duo who were previously two-thirds of a trio. And that trio achieved the rare feat of spending two non-consecutive months as my number one - November 2012 and January 2013 - with the instrumental track “Greyhound”. Their only previous success as Swedish House Mafia was also an instrumental - “One”, reaching a peak of number fourteen - but now they are about to bring a track with vocals into my chart for the first time ! My Record of the Month for October 2015 is Axwell /\ Ingrosso, and “Sun Is Shining”.

Great month with a good Top2 :)

I'm surprised to see Calvin's "Outside" and Passenger's "27" still rising, but i love both so i won't complaining 8-)

Also good debut for Avicii's latest single :)

"Outside" and "27" may yet rise further - although the progress of the two tracks from Avicii's new album this month may depend on whether it arrives on vinyl before the next chart is compiled ! I have it on order, but the release date seems to have slipped a little . . . . .

I have the vague recollection that these two did well in your chart quite some time ago, long before I had discovered them ! Another album I have on order is the one from Philipp Dittberner, and the follow-up single he also has in the German chart now will definitely be a new breaker this month . . . . .

Now, it's already time for the first retro chart of this month - and the second visit of 2015 to the concluding year of the 1980s. I was 25 years old, and had been promoted to assistant manager - it was probably the period in which I had to work the greatest number of hours in a typical week or month, but I still managed to keep up with the charts of several European countries. Again, there are quite a few "non-current" tracks here which had finally been found for me on seven-inch singles by contacts in continental Europe - but, most unusually, the whole of my top fifty from this month are available on YouTube ! Careful mixing of long and short versions enabled me to fit them all exactly into a three-hour journey back in time today - and here's what I was originally enjoying back in October 1989 . . . . .

Not many songs I know and like from that bunch. "Lambada" was so huge in 1989, it was one of only three singles to sell more than a million copies in Germany in the 1980s (the other two were "Sun Of Jamaica" and Fr David's "Words").

Thanks, Benny - all three of those major German sellers are high in my all-time ranking:

299 LAMBADA.............................................Kaoma
330 WORDS..........................................F.R. David
850 SUN OF JAMAICA.........................Goombay Dance Band

Now . . . . . I just remembered that I pre-prepared my second retro chart for October before I became ill - so, almost a week late, here it is. The clock is turned back thirty-two years - I was nineteen, and a few months into my second year at University, combining my studies with listening to the chart shows of the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands - plus, of course, the Europarade ! Three of the most obscure Irish-only hits are nowhere to be found on YouTube - but everything else fitted perfectly into three hours. Here are my favourites from October 1983 . . . . .
