In September, Sarah Connor looked like the strongest contender for October’s number one, as “So Schon Du Bist” crashed straight in at number three. However, it is now one of four non-movers - the others including “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)”, spending a third month in the runner-up spot for Felix Jaehn featuring Jasmine Thompson. The 14-year-old from London spent two months in pole position earlier this year together with the German producer Robin Schulz - and he now returns to the top with “Headlights”, on which the vocals are provided by Ilsey Juber, its co-writer. The former Chartbuster races up ten places to become my 215th chart-topper - but, among ten other climbers, Lost Frequencies replace one top five hit with another. The second number one in his homeland for the Belgian DJ Felix De Laat, “Reality”, advances nine places to number four - and could be a future number one in my chart too ! Completing the top five, last month’s number one falls four places for Philipp Dittberner and Marv - although there is already a follow-up hit to “Wolke 4” in Germany. Twenty-three other tracks on the way down include “Title” by Meghan Trainor - the fastest faller of the month dives nine places at 18 - while the longest laster clings on in for a fifteenth appearance, and a second at number 39, for Lilly Wood and the Prick - “Prayer In C”. That was a UK number one - and so was Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do”, which is this month’s Rapid Riser, moving up fifteen places to number 15.

All of this means that there is just one new entry in the top forty - September’s Chartbuster from Avicii, “Waiting For Love” arrives at number 24. And another track from his upcoming new album “Stories” is among five brand new breakers - “For A Better Day”. Two of the other potential future hits identified this month are by acts impressing me for the first time - R.City featuring Adam Levine are already doing well in several countries with “Locked Away”, while American performer Madilyn Bailey’s recent success with a cover version of David Guetta’s “Titanium” is rather more limited so far, only being embraced in France and Belgium. Meanwhile, Robin Schulz already has a follow-up to the new number one “Headlines” in the form of “Sugar” - on which the vocals are provided by 20-year-old Canadian Francesco Yates. However, the brand new Chartbuster, guaranteed to be a new entry in my November top forty, is for a duo who were previously two-thirds of a trio. And that trio achieved the rare feat of spending two non-consecutive months as my number one - November 2012 and January 2013 - with the instrumental track “Greyhound”. Their only previous success as Swedish House Mafia was also an instrumental - “One”, reaching a peak of number fourteen - but now they are about to bring a track with vocals into my chart for the first time ! My Record of the Month for October 2015 is Axwell /\ Ingrosso, and “Sun Is Shining”.

Great month with a good Top2 :)

I'm surprised to see Calvin's "Outside" and Passenger's "27" still rising, but i love both so i won't complaining 8-)

Also good debut for Avicii's latest single :)

"Outside" and "27" may yet rise further - although the progress of the two tracks from Avicii's new album this month may depend on whether it arrives on vinyl before the next chart is compiled ! I have it on order, but the release date seems to have slipped a little . . . . .

I have the vague recollection that these two did well in your chart quite some time ago, long before I had discovered them ! Another album I have on order is the one from Philipp Dittberner, and the follow-up single he also has in the German chart now will definitely be a new breaker this month . . . . .

Now, it's already time for the first retro chart of this month - and the second visit of 2015 to the concluding year of the 1980s. I was 25 years old, and had been promoted to assistant manager - it was probably the period in which I had to work the greatest number of hours in a typical week or month, but I still managed to keep up with the charts of several European countries. Again, there are quite a few "non-current" tracks here which had finally been found for me on seven-inch singles by contacts in continental Europe - but, most unusually, the whole of my top fifty from this month are available on YouTube ! Careful mixing of long and short versions enabled me to fit them all exactly into a three-hour journey back in time today - and here's what I was originally enjoying back in October 1989 . . . . .

Not many songs I know and like from that bunch. "Lambada" was so huge in 1989, it was one of only three singles to sell more than a million copies in Germany in the 1980s (the other two were "Sun Of Jamaica" and Fr David's "Words").

Thanks, Benny - all three of those major German sellers are high in my all-time ranking:

330 WORDS..........................................F.R. David
850 SUN OF JAMAICA.........................Goombay Dance Band

Now . . . . . I just remembered that I pre-prepared my second retro chart for October before I became ill - so, almost a week late, here it is. The clock is turned back thirty-two years - I was nineteen, and a few months into my second year at University, combining my studies with listening to the chart shows of the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands - plus, of course, the Europarade ! Three of the most obscure Irish-only hits are nowhere to be found on YouTube - but everything else fitted perfectly into three hours. Here are my favourites from October 1983 . . . . .

I knew it failed badly in the UK - it was one of very few Europarade number ones that wasn't even an official hit (top 75) here - but I didn't realise it wasn't popular in the US either !

Now . . . . . following my serious illness and hospitalisation, we're already so far into November that I've decided not to compile a new monthly chart, and instead to resume at the beginniing of December. This will only be the second time in over thirty-six years that I've missed a month - the other was December 1987, when I needed to concentrate on passing my final chartered accountancy exams at the first attempt. Luckily, I succeeded - or I mightn't have had a further career with the firm that lasted as long as . . . . . nearly five years !

So, instead, about a week late, here is the first retro chart for November - and it's a long journey back all the way to 1980, when I was in the lower sixth form at school and studying for my tenth "O" level and first "A" level - as well as the other "A" levels I was to sit a year later. Here are my favourites from thirty-five years ago this month . . . . .

Thanks, Benny - I guessed that "Super Trouper" would be one of your particular favourites, but it only spent one further month in my chart, at its peak of number 24 !

I had an almost immediate rethink after making the previous posting - although it will still be regarded as the "December" chart, I decided to go ahead with the compilation straight away, and post it at the earliest opportunity, which is . . . . . now !

The previous single from Felix De Laet, “Are You With Me”, was a chart-topper in the UK as well as his Belgian homeland, but peaked at number three in my chart in July and August of this year - however, the follow-up has now become my 216th number one. “Reality”, with vocals by Janieck Devy, climbs three places to the top for Lost Frequencies - one of a mere six upwardly mobile tracks in my top forty this month. Three of the others also advance three places each - Feder featuring Lyse rise from number seven to number four with “Goodbye”, Ellie Goulding moves from 15 to 12 with “Love Me Like You Do”, and the Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band sneak into the top ten with “If I Needed You” - while Passenger can only manage to struggle up one place to number 15 with “27”. Meanwhile, the strongest challenger for the first number one of 2016 looks like the Rapid Riser from Avicii - “Waiting For Love” zooms up seventeen places to number seven, after being the only new arrival last time. This month, there is a 300% increase in new chart debuts to . . . . . four ! After slow climbs through the breakers, two Texans reach the top forty - Kelly Clarkson comes in at number 39 with “Heartbeat Song”, and Selena Gomez is fourteen places higher as the guest vocalist on “I Want You To Know”, which becomes the fourth hit for German electronic dance producer Zedd. As one Robin Schulz production drops out - Lilly Wood and the Prick’s “Prayer In C”, after an impressive fifteen months - another replaces it in the form of “Sugar” at number 35. Canadian singer Francesco Yates makes his chart debut by providing the vocals on this one - while there’s a much higher debut as a duo for Axwell /\ Ingrosso at number 14. “Sun Is Shining” was October’s Chartbuster for these two former members of Swedish House Mafia, whose “Greyhound” galloped right up to number one in November 2012, and returned to pole position two months later. All of this leaves five non-movers and twenty-five hits moving down - including longest laster “Bullit” by Watermat at 30 and fastest faller “Are You With Me” from Lost Frequencies at 18.

More famous as an actor - and especially for his television and film portrayals of the Tudor King Henry VIII - Keith Michell died recently, at the age of 88. He had a long-running success in my chart in the early 1980s with “Captain Beaky” - a top five hit in the UK - which now returns to the top forty breakers. And there are six brand new potential hits appearing there for the first time, four of which are by acts who have never previously impressed me. A former contestant in the French version of “The Voice”, Louane, has gone on to have a very successful single not only in her homeland but also further afield with “Avenir” - while Swedish folk-singing sisters Klara and Johanna Soderberg have reached an equally diverse range of European charts with “My Silver Lining”. On the basis that their music should be something to help listeners get through their everyday life, they decided to call themselves First Aid Kit. In contrast, New Yorker Matt Simons has always recorded under his own name - and a remix of the title track from his 2014 album, “Catch And Release”, is also doing well in some parts of continental Europe. It has already reached number one in Belgium, and is close to the top ten in Germany. Meanwhile, the fourth “brand new” breaker is from a group that broke up all the way back in 1981 ! Four years earlier, the French electronic musicians Space were riding high in the charts of several countries - including the UK - with the instrumental “Magic Fly”. I hadn’t even begun listening to pop music at that time - but I have heard this track featured on several archive and vintage chart shows in recent months, and it could now very belatedly become a future hit in my top forty. Meanwhile, two acts who have already had major successes there in 2015 could rapidly follow them up. Philipp Dittberner, who topped my chart in August and September with “Wolke 4”, now arrives in the breakers with “Das Ist Dein Leben” - while the French singer who held the number two spot for an almost unprecedented five consecutive months (March to July) is now guaranteed a second hit. However, the new Chartbuster is not a track from her latest album, “Paris” - but instead the theme song from a 2013 film. The movie was a remake of a television series originally made in 1965, which was dubbed into English and aired in the UK many times, especially in summer holidays, entitled “Belle And Sebastien”. My Record of the Month for December 2015 is Zaz, with “Belle”.

Great #1! It wasn't a big hit on my charts but i definitely liked it when i heard it on the radio :)

Good debut for Zedd & Selena's "I Want You Now", Robin Schulz' "Sugar" and Kelly Clarkson's "Heartbeat Song". Especially "Sugar" is a great song, i hope this one will be a success on your charts as well :)

Magic Fly is a classic. Better late than never.

Nice to see Landslide Of Love in your Retros. Should have been a UK #1.

Unfortunately, although "Are You With Me" had been a massive hit in the UK, "Reality" just doesn't seem to have impressed very many music buyers here at all . . . . .

All of those new entries in December should climb in January - including "Sugar", so far only a CD release, with associated restrictions on its progress. However, I now have a vinyl version on order, hopefully arriving soon (and certainly before the end of the month).

"Landslide of Love" was the only Transvision Vamp single that I liked - surprisingly, it wasn't as big a success for them in the UK as some of their other releases.

"Magic Fly" might have been in one or more of the 1977 editions of "Top Of The Pops" that were repeated in 2012, but I don't recall it from then at all ! It already seems certain to make an impressive debut in my top forty in January.

I had the vague recollection that my new breaker from First Aid Kit might have appeared in your chart at some point - and, searching just now, I found it . . . . . near the beginning of 2014 ! I only recently discovered this one, as it has just spent seven weeks in the bottom ten of the Dutch top forty. I've no idea why it took so long to chart there since its original release !

Now . . . . . nearly a third of the way through the month, it's time for another retro chart. This time, back to when I was just 20 years old, and coming to the end of the first term / semester of my final year at University. The top fifty of December 1984 looked like this:

Interesting to see both the original version and the Blancmange remake of "The Day Before You Came" (how odd that the cover version peaked higher in the UK than the original by ABBA!).
"When The Rain Begins To Fall" is another song with an unusual chart performance, as it flopped in both the UK and the US yet became a big number one hit all over Continental Europe.

Another one that failed in the US as well?! I didn't realise that - I would have thought both Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora would be better known there than in continental Europe. Of course, I watched their duet grind to a halt some way short of the top forty in the UK - surprising too that it wasn't a bit more successful here.

Both versions of "The Day Before You Came" peaked at number 17 in my chart - but Abba's scored more points. It's currently at 1503 in my all-time ranking - some way above Blancmange's, which is at 1634.

I regularly tune in to the weekly radio chart shows of Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands as well as those of the UK and Ireland - which is how I usually become aware of all these excellent continental hits ! It's strange that some of them eventually make it to the UK, but others never do . . . . .

Both "Sugar" and "Sun Is Shining" should be moving up in January (almost every new entry does in its second, third, fourth month.....)

I just realised that I forgot to include the featured number ones of bygone years when I posted the December chart early - so I've edited them in now:

Two thirds of the way through the month already - and time for the second December retro chart !

This one was during my second year as a first-year manager ( I was relatively lucky to be kept on without promotion or any pay rise - it was a period of recession in which several of my colleagues were made redundant ) and, although I was kept very busy at work ( little suspecting that my career there would be over in less than a year) I was still keeping up with a lot of European charts ! Much more from continental Europe than from the UK was in my chart twenty-four years ago - in which several old Christmas-related hits reappeared, and this was one of the then very rare instances in which a former number one returned to the top . . . . . Here are my favourites from December 1991.

Thanks for commenting, Benny - I never charted anything else by Extreme or Martika, but several other good tracks came after these two from Army of Lovers, albeit with much less success across the continent !

Now . . . . as I'll be very busy with the end-of-year UKmixParade throughout the coming week, I've updated my own chart a few days early again this month !

Five tracks in my top forty remain in the same positions as 2015 becomes 2016 - “Uitzicht” by Bakermat is stuck at number forty for an incredible eleventh consecutive month, while the top four are equally static, with Lost Frequencies featuring Janieck Devy’s “Reality” staying ahead of Robin Schulz featuring Ilsey with “Headlines”, Sarah Connor with “So Schoen Du Bist” and Feder featuring Lyse with “Goodbye”. Completing the top five is Avicii with “Waiting For Love”. This former Chartbuster advances two places, one of just five climbers this month - and the others were all new entries in December. Axwell /\ Ingrosso move up three places to number 11 with “Sun is Shining”, while Zedd featuring Selena Gomez glide past them from 25 to ten with “I Want You To Know” - giving the German electronic dance producer his fourth top ten success. Robin Schulz featuring Francesco Yates have this month’s Rapid Riser, as “Sugar” races up seventeen places to number 18 - and Kelly Clarkson is just three places short of her previous best with “Heartbeat Song”, ascending twelve places to 27.

Among twenty-seven hits dropping down are Meghan Trainor with the fastest faller “Title”, diving fourteen places to number 36 - and the joint longest lasters from Ten Walls and Sam Smith. “I’m Not The Only One” and “Walking With Elephants”, both former number ones, notch up their fourteenth chart appearances, sliding to 32 and 38 respectively. All three of this week’s new entries are much higher - although none of them are 2015 releases, instead originating from 2013, 2014 and 1977 ! Last month’s Chartbuster gives Zaz her second hit with “Belle” - the theme from the film version of “Belle et Sebastien” arrives at number 13, and a remixed version of the title track from his latest album is becoming increasingly popular in continental Europe for Matt Simons. “Catch and Release” makes an impressive debut at number eight in my top forty - climbing 107 places to get there - but the highest newcomers are Space, who crash in at number six with “Magic Fly”, recorded nearly forty years ago but which I only discovered in recent months.

I became aware only in the last few weeks of the death earlier in 2015 of Jim McCann, at the age of seventy. The former member of the Dubliners had three successes in my chart - including “Grace”, his biggest solo hit in Ireland, which now returns to the top forty breakers. Also there are five brand new potential future hits - and the second highest of these is from another Irish artist. Enya has had two number one hits in my top forty, with “Only If” and “Only Time”. Could the first single from her new album, “Echoes Of Rain”, become the third ? Perhaps not having “Only” in the title is a bad sign - but another of the new breakers has that covered. As well as many solo successes, Kylie Minogue has already had two hit collaborations in my chart - with Keith Washington and Taio Cruz - and “Only You”, featuring James Corden, could be the third. Felix Jaehn spent three months at number two with his remix of “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)“, sung by Jasmine Thompson - and on his follow-up, “Book Of Love”, the vocals are provided by Polina Gagarina. She competed in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest - and my new Chartbuster, guaranteed to be a new entry in February, should have been there too! It could surely have brought a better result for Austria than the song that it narrowly lost out against - and definitely couldn’t have done worse than finishing last with no points. Not released physically until it was featured on the nineteen-year-old singer’s debut album, “Debut”, several months later - and therefore not eligible to enter my top forty breakers until now - my Record of the Month for January 2016 is Zoe Straub, with “Quel Filou”.

Still a great Top3 and glad to see "I Want You To Know" being a Top10 hit now :)

Love the climb for "Sugar". I prefer this a lot to "Headlights" so i hope it becomes a hit on your charts as well. The longevity for "Break Free" is amazing, and it belongs to my all-time-faves by now so i'm really glad to see this success :)

01 04 05 YOU AND YOUR SISTER This Mortal Coil

:o :o
Was not expecting to see that! The project (a loose collective of rotating musicians led by 4AD label boss and producer Ivo Watts-Russell) is more known for housing the Cocteau Twins members on Song To The Siren. This song actually featured Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly from The Breeders covering a song by Chris Bell from Big Star. Not the kind of names i would associate with yourself.

I bought Crucified and People Are Still Having Sex. Martika great, too.

   3 tears for Marina. Not even Immortal? Call the HIghlander!

I don't think "Sugar" is going to follow "Headlights" all the way to number one, but it's racing up and will surely continue to climb in February - maybe into the top ten. It must be doing well on streaming in the UK, as it took an unexpected dive in the UK chart last week, when I understand some streaming was not reflected there as usual.

Both releases involve Zedd, as did two others that also did very well in my chart - I suspect most of the credit is down to his production, as the acts he has collaborated with haven't been very successful in my chart with their solo releases.

I don't think I've ever bought anything else by any of these acts ! I heard this hit in the Dutch charts for several weeks - it reached the top twenty there, but as far as I can tell it was never released as a single in the UK. The song returned to my chart much more recently when it was sung by Mayken Hoessen, a contestant in the Belgian (Flanders) version of "The Voice" - only eligible because all the songs sung in an early round were released on a compilation CD album there.

"Immortal" might finally chart next month. I still need to find time to check out the rest of the "Froot" album . . . . .
