Number one twenty-six years ago: HIJO DE LA LUNA Mecano

Just as in August, the only non-mover in my September chart is “Faded”, which spends a third month at number one. Alan Walker, the 19-year-old producer who was born in Northampton but is based in Norway has engaged the same uncredited singer, Iselin Solheim, on the follow-up single “Sing Me To Sleep” – and after being last month’s Chartbuster, that is the second highest of four new entries, arriving at number 14. However, a 22-year-old DJ and producer from Belgium, Felix de Laet, has the highest debut - as “Beautiful Life” crashes straight in at number five for Lost Frequencies featuring Sandro Cavazza. This is his third success, and also the third song with that title to enter my chart – although the one by Armin Van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma peaked at number 19, the other by Ace of Base was one of their seven number ones ! Meanwhile, Kungs vs Cookin’ On 3 Burners recently reached number one in both France and Germany with “This Girl”, which sneaks into my chart at number 40 – and a classical piece given a “happy hardcore” treatment in the mid 1990s as “Aria C” belatedly becomes a hit for Cassandra, new at 23. She is from Belgium – as is Noemie Wolfs, who has the Rapid Riser with “Burning”, racing up from 31 to 17. There are eight other climbers, and twenty-six tracks moving down – including, side by side, the fastest faller and longest laster. Zedd featuring Selena Gomez dive ten places to 36 with “I Want You To Know” - just above Meghan Trainor, making her fifteenth appearance with “Dear Future Husband”.

Five singles from the early 1990s receive belated opportunities to enter my top forty in the months ahead. From 1990, there’s the late Kirsty MacColl with “Miss Otis Regrets”, featuring the Pogues – and, from 1991, the former lead singer of BZN, Anny Schilder, with “Gladly Belong To You”. The other three are cover versions – Pepeto with “Pinocchio” from 1992, Andrea Jürgens with “Eleni Heiss das Mädchen” from 1993, and Sonia’s take on “Hopelessly Devoted To You” from 1994. However, the other five new breakers are rather more recent releases. Having both entered the top forty last month with their previous singles “Stressed Out” and “Fast Car”, Twenty One Pilots and Jonas Blue could double their tallies next time with “Ride” and “Perfect Strangers” – while, after six months there and now falling from a top ten peak with “Drive All Night”, there is a follow-up single by Swiss singer/songwriter Anna Känzig. “Bonnie And Clyde” could give her a second success, while Marco Z is in search of his first with “Fill My Life Up”. But guaranteed a place in my October top forty is Mikael Persson, a Swedish servicer of Volvo diesel engines who, alongside part-time work as a DJ, has produced a song co-written by its singer, 23-year-old Sara Hjellstrom - which unexpectedly gave them a number one hit in their homeland. Its popularity has also spread, with variable degrees of success, to many other countries – including Germany and Switzerland, in both of which it climbed the charts very slowly but eventually reached the top ten. Currently sitting just outside the top forty in the UK, my Record of the Month for September 2016 is Mike Perry featuring Shy Martin, and “The Ocean”.

Now, just over a third of the way through September, it's time for another retro chart - from the dim and distant past when I was seventeen years old, and just beginning my final year at school, The only chart shows I listened to then were those of the UK (with Tony Blackburn) and Ireland (with Larry Gogan) - so the charts of those countries are where all of the tracks in my own chart came from ! Here are my favourites from thirty-five years ago . . . . .

Number one eighteen years ago: LIFE IS A FLOWER Ace of Base
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Number one thirty-six years ago: DO IT, DO IT AGAIN Raffaella Carra
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are three non-movers in my chart this month – including two of the top three, as Charlie Puth stays at number three with “One Call Away” and Alle Farben featuring Younotus remain one place away from the top with “Please Tell Rosie”. But September’s number one and number five switch places – Alan Walker dives four spots with “Faded”, and is replaced by someone who first chart-topper was “Reality”, at the end of last year and the beginning of this one. It’s Lost Frequencies – 22-year-old Belgian DJ and producer Felix De Laat – with “Beautiful Life”, featuring vocals by Sandro Cavazza. Although it has performed somewhat less well elsewhere, this has given him a third consecutive number one in his homeland, slipping in for just one week to help to prevent Justin Timberlake from spending even more than fourteen weeks at the top there. The first of the three had been “Are You With Me”, also a massive hit in many other countries – while the latest is my 221st chart-topper, and the second one called “Beautiful Life”. The other was by Ace of Base, there in March and April 1996. This becomes the third title shared by two of my number ones – unrelated songs called “Without You” previously reached pole position for Ava and for David Guetta featuring Akon, as did equally different hits for Special D and Noemi both entitled “You”. The majority of the eight other climbers in the top forty this month make only minor upward strides, but there are three impressive movers. Jonas Blue featuring Dakota’s “Fast Car” accelerates from 35 to 20, while Cassandra’s happy-hardcore “Aria C” leaps into my top ten decades after its original release, racing up from 23 to number seven. However, the Rapid Riser zooms up eighteen places to number 22 for Kungs vs Cookin on 3 Burners, after being a big success across Europe this summer – “This Girl”. Meanwhile, there are three brand new entries, led by last month’s Chartbuster. “The Ocean” only briefly reached the bottom end of the UK top forty, but fared much better elsewhere and enters my chart at number 14 for Mike Perry featuring Shy Martin – while Marco Z and Pepeto arrive at 34 and 37 respectively with “Fill My Life Up” and “Pinocchio”. All of this leaves twenty-five tracks moving down, including the fastest faller from Matt Simons and the longest laster by the Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band. The former number one “Catch and Release” slides seven places to number 17, while “If I Needed You” slips one place to number 40 after fifteen months, during which it peaked at number ten.

As 2016 continues to be a desperately poor year for new music, this month’s trawl through the archives in search of formerly overlooked possible gems focuses on the early 1980s. Two songs from each of the first three years of that decade now have belated opportunities of chart action. From 1980, the biggest Dutch success for Maywood was “Late At Night” – while “Ratatataplan” by Raffaella Carra may or may not have been released as a single, but I have finally tracked it down (mis-spelled!) on an LP. Almost a UK number one in 1981 for Kate Robbins and Beyond, “More Than In Love” could yet be a future hit in my chart - as could Irish band Gina, Dale Haze and the Champions’ take on “Real Good Feeling” from the same year. And before becoming hits in my chart for Tight Fit and for Midnight Blue featuring Louise Tucker, “Fantasy Island” and “Midnight Blue” were recorded in 1982 by Dutch performers the Millionaires and by married couple Ad and Karin van Hoorn. The latter’s other releases seem to be credited to variations of their real names – but on this one, “Moonlight Song”, for reasons unknown, they were billed as “Aline and Ad”. Not even born when any of these acts began having hits, 23-year-old singer/songwriter, pianist and violinist from Newbury, Berkshire, Sophie Frances Cooke has been credited only with her middle name on several recent releases – but has so far only had major singles chart success in Belgium with “Don’t Worry About Me”. Becoming eligible for inclusion in the top forty breakers only this month, it is the most promising new arrival this time – but only debuts at number 110, so it cannot be the Chartbuster. Instead, a place is guaranteed in November’s top forty for the biggest climber into the top 100. Advancing from 103 to 60, it’s a song originally recorded last year, but which has only become enormously popular more recently in several countries after being remixed by Russian producers Filatov and Karas. Those countries don’t yet include the UK – perhaps it will finally succeed here, perhaps not ! My Record of the Month for October 2016 is Imany, and “Don’t Be So Shy”.

As we're almost a third of the way through the month already, here is my first retro chart for October. This one was from when I had just completed my first month at work - although the first fortnight of it had been study leave, and I think there was a week's course immediately after that as well ! I was twenty-one, and using timer switches to record various radio chart shows in my absence . . . . . so the vast majority of the singles that were in this month's chart were hits in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and/or other parts of Europe. Here's the music I was enjoying in October 1985 . . . . .

Time now for the second retro chart of this month - and a return to when I was fifteen, in the fifth form at school, and only tuning in to the chart shows of the UK and Ireland. And, while there were plenty of new arrivals of hits fron both of these countries, my third monthly chart may be the only one out of over thirty-seven years in which there was just one climber ! Here's what I was enjoying all those decades ago - probably before the majority of members of this forum were even born - in October 1979 . . . . .

I like all these. 'Maybe' is cheesy but really nice, it was a huge number one hit in Germany in late 1979.

I'm glad you're back, Benny - I noticed your disappearance several weeks ago and was beginning to become concerned, as I know others were too.

"Maybe" was only a very minor hit on my chart, climbing to a peak of number 24 in its second and final month - and it reached number 14 in the UK. I've never seen the television series for which it was the theme tune, "The Life And Times of Grizzly Adams" - I don't think it was shown in all parts of the UK, and was probably only at around tea-time or in the early afternoon in most regions. However. I suspect that it may have been broadcast in a much more prime-time slot in the German-speaking countries, in all of which the theme was a rather bigger hit (it got to number 2 in Switzerland, number 8 in Austria). The German title of the series seems to have been "Der Mann in den Bergen".

There are six non-movers in my top forty this month, all of them in the top ten – including “Beautiful Life” by Lost Frequencies featuring Sandro Cavazza, which spends a second month at number one. The top ten also features two of this month’s nine climbers, as Cassandra ascends from seven to five with “Aria C” and Kungs vs Cookin on 3 Burners have the Rapid Riser for the second consecutive month. “This Girl” races up another twelve places to number ten – while, further down, Twenty One Pilots fly up another six places to 20 with “Stressed Out”, Marco Z’s “Fill My Life Up” moves up ten spots to 24, and Pepeto dances up seven at 30. “Pinnochio” is one of the recent breakers drawn from deep in the archives that has gone on to belatedly enter the chart – and another this time is a Dutch interpretation from 1982 of a piano sonata by Beethoven. “Moonlight Song” sneaks in at number 40 for Aline and Ad – but two other much more recent releases make rather higher debuts. “Bad Ideas” is the third hit for German musician Frans Zimmer, more well-known as Alle Farben – that’s new at 26, while nine places higher Imany arrives with last month’s Chartbuster, “Don’t Be So Shy”. All of this leaves twenty-two hits moving down – and the longest laster is now another former Chartbuster. “Reality” by Lost Frequencies slides three places at 33 in its fourteenth appearance – while the fastest faller is “Badaboum” from Hooverphonic, diving from 21 to 35.

This month’s search for long-lost possible gems focuses on the second half of the 1980s, with one single from each of those five years earning an opportunity of belated success. Back in that decade, Herbert Leonard and the duo Peter Kent and Luisa Fernandez had top five hits in my chart with “Puissance Et Gloire” and “Solo Por Ti” respectively – now they could double up with “Quand Tu M’aimes” and “Con Esperanza”. Natascha Wright had two minor breakers with the dance project JAM – but prior to those she had recorded a solo single called “Selfcontrol”. I only recently became aware that Dutch singer Robert Long died almost ten years ago – one of his most memorable hits in his homeland was “Iedereen Doet’t”. That could now be on the way to my top forty – as could Spanish dance project Loco Mia with their track that was also called “Loco Mia”. And three much more recent releases arrive in the top forty breakers this month. Although he has been having massive worldwide hits for two decades, originally with the group *NSYNC but mainly together with other featured artists and as a solo performer, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” is the first single I have ever bought by Justin Timberlake ! In contrast, “Hiding In A Song” is the eleventh breaker for the Belgian group Hooverphonic. Eight of the other ten have gone on to reach the top forty – and one of them, “Anger Never Dies”, went all the way to number one. But guaranteed a place in next month’s top forty is one half of a duo who also topped my chart, in May and June 2009, with a former Chartbuster that spent more weeks in the German top 100 than any other hit ever. Since then, the two brothers have had three further solo successes each – but now older brother Paul is about to be overtaken by his younger sibling. My Record of the Month for November 2016 is Fritz Kalkbrenner, with “In This Game”.

Thanks, I'm also glad to be back!

I'm not a fan of current music that's why I can't comment on your newest chart, but I'm looking forward to your next retro month! :D

So it's not just me that's finding little to like about the music of 2016 ! This was a significant reason in my decision to look deep into my record and cd collection and now regularly include older releases in the breakers as well as the few promising tracks that I'm hearing in all of the European charts nowadays (which seem increasingly to be becoming more similar to each other than ever before).

It really has been a dreadful year for new music - we're not far from the end of it, and so far I've only bought nineteen 2016 releases !

It's not even the lack of physical availability that is the problem - I'm still looking for several tracks from recent years that don't ever seem to have had a physical release, but none of those are from the current year , , , , ,

It doesn't look likely that I'll ever be able to eventually produce a top 100 for 2016 - and even a top 50, top 40, top 30 of the year might prove impossible !

Glad we agree on this! :D The song that I like most from your list is the one by Anouk. For new music I'm only focussing on some European charts (France, Italy, Spain, Germany), 95% from the US and UK charts is just awful.

Now, the first retro chart of this month - and the second visit of 2016 to the concluding year of the 1980s. I was 25 years old, and had been promoted to assistant manager - it was probably the period in which I had to work the greatest number of hours in a typical week or month, but I still managed to keep up with the charts of several European countries, and was finding many more singles I wanted to buy than I am at present ! Here's what I was enjoying back in November 1989 . . . . .

Thanks for dropping in, Jake - that first one is probably the least well known of all those on your list. Although it has done extremely well in Austria and Germany, unfortunately it hasn't really travelled anywhere else - and I think I've only seen it in one other personal chart in this forum. I'd guess that you discovered it in the same way as "Catch and Release" a few months back . . . . .

Thanks, Benny - I don't think I've heard the "Summer Megamix" for a while, but twenty-seven years on I still hear all of the others here played quite often on the radio !

Now - the second retro chart of the month - and it's back to when I was nineteen years old, in my second year of university, and already enjoying a lot of European chart shows. These were my favourites then:

.
For the second time this year, the highest new entry in my top forty comes straight in at the top. In February, it was “Echoes In Rain” by Enya – and now, in December, Fritz Kalkbrenner arrives in pole position with “In This Game”. One of three new entries this month, November’s Chartbuster becomes my 222nd chart-topper – and his second. His first was the 172nd - seven and a half years ago, he was at number one together with his brother Paul, with the track that has spent longer than any other in the top 100 of their German homeland, “Sky And Sand”. One of the forty-nine other hits that reached number one in between these two came from the Belgian group Hooverphonic – and they now have their ninth hit in less than six years with “Hiding In A Song”, brand new at 40. Meanwhile, four places higher is the chart debut for Justin Timberlake, arriving with “Can’t Stop The Feeling”. This has been a major chart success all over the world in 2016 for the 35-year-old singer, songwriter, actor and record producer from Memphis, Tennesee – and so have “Fast Car” from Jonas Blue featuring Dakota and “This Girl” by Kungs vs Cookin on 3 Burners. They both continue to climb my chart this month, ascending to numbers nine and six respectively – but Alle Farben have the biggest of seven other upwardly mobile tracks this time, as Rapid Riser “Bad Ideas” races from 26 to eight. The previous hit by the 31-year-old DJ and producer seems to have peaked at number two – “Please Tell Rosie” now slides to number four, one of twenty-eight hits moving down. The others include the longest laster from Lost Frequencies featuring Janieck Devy – the former number one “Reality”, descending two places to 35 – and the fastest faller, also a former number one. “Catch And Release” by Matt Simons dives eleven places to number 32.

This month’s visit to the archives concentrates on Christmas songs from the 1980’s – with six former hits and four potentially very belated ones included in the top forty breakers. In with a chance of further success in the festive period are Nevada with “In The Bleak Mid Winter”, David Essex with “A Winter’s Tale”, the Snowmen with “Hokey Cokey”, Twiggy with “Winter Wonderland”, Jona Lewie with “Stop The Cavalry” and Trio with “Turaluraluralu” – while Fay Lovsky could chart for the first time with her own song and first Dutch hit, “Christmas Was A Friend Of Mine”. Prelude reached my top ten with “After The Goldrush”, originally recorded in 1973 – decades later, they might double their tally of hits with their interpretation of “Silent Night”. Boney M and Berdien Stenberg each have many previous successes – twelve and fourteen respectively – and their versions of “Hark The Herald Angels Sing” and “Jingle Bells” could now chart this Christmas. But the guaranteed new entry in my next top forty is the one and only brand new breaker from 2016. The new Chartbuster is by a 34-year-old Frenchman who originally founded the group Dig Up Elvis, part of whose publicity stunts were apparently the excavation of various purported graves of the rock singer to prove to the public that his death had been faked. However, he is probably more well-known for his victory in the reality show “Nouvelle Star” in 2007. Two years later, he topped the French charts in a collaboration with Canadian singer/songwriter Cœur de Pirate – but only a few weeks ago he had his first solo number one. My Record of the Month for December 2016 is Julien Doré, with “Le Lac”.

A third of the way through December already - and time for another retro chart. Thirty-six years ago, I was sixteen, in the Lower Sixth at school ( Wikipedia says nowadays that is "Year 12" ) and only listening to the chart shows of the UK and Ireland. I doubt that I could have predicted back then that I would now be regularly tuning in to those of six countries - the others being Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands - as well as many retro chart shows !

Thanks, Benny - I'm not sure when I discovered that "They Don't Know" was originally sung by its writer, Kirsty MacColl, without becoming a hit, but it wasn't until September 1995 that I obtained a copy of her single at a record fair. It entered the breakers in that month, and went on to reach a peak of number 14 in my chart.

For the second retro chart this month, it's back to the end of 1987, when I was busy studying for my final professional exams - the only time apart from my major illness towards the end of 2015 that I compiled just one chart to cover two months ! I felt that I needed to leave most other things aside and put in the maximum possible effort to secure passes in all subjects, because a greater workload in the following months would make it even more difficult to achieve success in resits, should any or all be necessary. Luckily, I managed to pass everything at this first attempt, and have never had to sit another exam since then at all . . . . .

After the exams had finished, I think I put together an "all-time" chart for the first time, as there had been exactly 100 charts and exactly 700 hits by that point ( yes, an average of seven new entries per month - I don't think there have been as many as seven more than maybe a couple of times in the last five years! ). But that would either be lost in the mists of time or filed away goodness knows where - I recall that it was then only handwritten and/or typed. I didn't really begin to use spreadsheets - or even computers at all very much - until a year or two later. What a long way we have progressed in the past three decades . . . . .

By the way, I had absolutely no idea until only a few weeks ago that it was the very same artist that did very well in my chart with "Bolero" that also did so well with "Cocoon". The performer mainly known as Fancy had many aliases, one of which was Timerider !

The new year begins very much as the old one ended, with the three top-rated tunes remaining exactly as they were. Cassandra stays at number three with the happy hardcore “Aria C”, Lost Frequencies featuring Sandro Cavazza are still at number two with the former chart-topper “Beautiful Life”, and the song that arrived in pole position last month spends a second month there for Fritz Kalkbrenner. However, “In Your Game” could face a strong challenge next time from the one and only new entry in the top forty, as Julien Doré crashes straight in at number four with his former French number one “Le Lac”. Completing the top five is one of ten climbers – “This Girl” moves up one further place for Kungs vs Cookin On 3 Burners. However, almost all of the others make bigger advances – and sharing the title of Rapid Riser this month are the Dutch duo Aline and Ad and the Belgian group Hooverphonic. “Moonlight Song” races up from 29 to 17, while “Hiding In A Song” goes from 40 to 28. All of this leaves twenty-six tracks dropping down – but none of them by more than five places ! Matt Simons was the fastest faller last time with “Catch And Release” – he descends again from 32 to 37, but this time he is the joint fastest faller with “One Call Away” by Charlie Puth at 12, “Faded” by Alan Walker at 15, “My Silver Lining” from First Aid Kit at 26 and “I Like The Way I Dance” from Hooverphonic at 27. Meanwhile, Lost Frequencies featuring Janieck Devy still have the longest laster, as “Reality” slides one place to 36 in its sixteenth month in the top forty.

None of the Christmas songs that returned to the top forty breakers have moved up into the chart – although they all advance closer. Now, five further former Yuletide hits from the late 1980’s also return – Shakin’ Stevens with “Merry Christmas Everyone”, Jive Bunny and the MasterMixers with “Let’s Party”, Stevie Nicks’ version of “Silent Night”, the “Minder”-themed “What Are We Gonna Get ‘Er Indoors” from Dennis Waterman and George Cole, and “Christmas Dance” by Santa und Claus. And, following the recent most unexpected death of George Michael aged only 53, his two former hits on my chart reappear in the breakers – “Heal The Pain” and his collaboration with Lisa Stansfield, “These Are The Days Of Our Lives”. And there are three brand new breakers, all of them by artists who have previously reached number one in my top forty. Although “The Closest Thing To Crazy” and “If You Were A Sailboat” are higher in my all-time ranking, it was “Better Than A Dream” that went all the way to the top in July 2012 for Katie Melua. Now the beautiful singer, supporter of various charities and occasional teller of filthy jokes could be on her way to her thirteenth success with “The Little Swallow”. Unlike all of the others, however, this one is sung in Ukrainian. Martin Solveig came straight in at number one six years ago with “Hello” and spent five months there, an impressive total that has never been matched since then. His latest offering, “Places”, features vocals by Norwegian singer/songwriter Ina Wroldsen – who is the co-writer of the UK’s Christmas 2016 number one from Clean Bandit. However, it is the group who have one of the Rapid Risers this month with “Hiding In A Song” and one of the fastest fallers with “I Like The Way I Dance” that are now guaranteed their tenth hit with the first Chartbuster of the new year. My Record of the Month for January 2017 is Hooverphonic, and “You”.
