'Making Your Mind Up' is one of the best ESC winners ever!
Thanks, Benny - it certainly seems to be one of the most remembered. And the UK has only had one more winner since then - it may be quite some time before we have another !

Now, back to the present - although a few old Eurovision entries are faring better than even the most impressive submissions from the 2017 contest so far . . . . .

The sixth new chart of 2017 has another new number one – the 226th to date – as April’s Chartbuster and May’s highest new entry rises five places for Alok and Bruno Martini featuring Zeeba. “Hear Me Now” is one of nine climbers this time - replacing “Grey” by Kölsch, which slides two places to number three. In between them is a strong contender for next month’s number one – Rihanna advances three more places to number two with “Love On The Brain”. Among the other upwardly mobile tracks, two are the joint Rapid Risers, racing up thirteen places each. From 36 to 23, Train could be on track for their biggest success to date with “Play That Song”- and from 23 to 10, Raffaella Carra gets a fifth top ten hit with “Ratatataplan”, several decades after the first ! One place higher, the much younger singer Dua Lipa moves into the top ten for the first time in her fifth month with “Be The One”. Meanwhile, there are five new entries – and the sixth hit for Clean Bandit is the first featuring Zara Larsson. “Symphony”, last month’s Chartbuster and a recent number one in the UK, arrives at number 17. Ozark Henry’s third success is “A Dream That Never Stops”, new at 24 – and there are chart debuts for three other acts. Born in Kenya in 1936, Roger Whittaker is almost the oldest performer in my chart with “The Last Farewell”. Originally recorded in 1971, this was not a major worldwide hit until four years later – but it has taken considerably longer to reach my top forty, entering now at number 22. Seventeen-year-old Blanche finished in an impressive fourth place for Belgium in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, and she is new at 35 in my chart with “City Lights” – while, after failing to chart in the late 1990s or early 2000s with any of their ten singles that reached the breakers, Steps have their very first top forty hit in my chart with “Scared Of The Dark”. That’s new at 29 – twenty-four places better than their previous best placing with “Better Best Forgotten”. And twenty-six tracks are moving down this month, including the longest laster and fastest faller. “Magic Fly” by Space slides nine places to 36 in its eighteenth appearance, while “Sing Me To Sleep” by Alan Walker dives eleven places from 28 to 39.

Originally born in Switzerland, but spending most of his life in Italy, the composer, producer, musician and DJ Robert Miles died this month of cancer at the age of 47. Four of his most well-known singles reached my top forty when originally released – indeed, only one of the four spent more than a single month in the breakers before rising into the top forty – and they all now return to the breakers. Those are “Freedom” featuring Kathy Sledge, “One And One” featuring Maria Nayler, “Fable”, and his greatest success “Children” – which reached number one in several countries in 1995. Meanwhile, it’s a much earlier year than this – 1976 - from which some previously neglected potential hits arrive in the breakers this time. Pussycat previously charted with “Mississippi” and “Lovers Of A Kind” – and “Georgie” could be about to give them a belated third hit. Jean-Michel Jarre may also soon have a third success with “Oxygene IV” – while chart-toppers by three other artists appear in the breakers for the first time. “A Fifth Of Beethoven” reached number one in both America and Canada for Walter Murphy; “S-s-s-single Bed” went to number one in Australia, and peaked in the top five in the UK, for Fox; and “Rock And Roll Star” was a Belgian number one, and very nearly matched that success in their Dutch homeland for one of several groups who have used the name “Champagne”. To avoid confusion – but also, as it turned out, avoiding success – they were credited as “Dutch Champagne” in France and as “Bubbley” in the UK. None of these arrive inside the top 100, however – and nor do any more recent releases ! So the biggest climber into the top 100 from below it becomes the new Chartbuster – and it’s a song that made it to number 116 in May after I heard it played just once on the radio (and, of course, verified that a physical release was available). Now it climbs sixty places to number 56, and is guaranteed to enter my top forty in July. I suspect that it would not just have been me that thought it might be a new release by someone who had already had thirteen hits in my top forty, and the longest lasting number one album of all time in her Dutch homeland – Caro Emerald. But it’s not – instead, it is the work of a 35-year-old singer-songwriter from Chugiak, Anchorage in Alaska. She has been releasing albums for more than a decade, and has been a support act for Rick Astley on his latest tour – so perhaps her upcoming album, the first on which she is billed only by her surname, excluding her first name (Kate), will become her most successful. Its title track is my Record of the Month for June 2017 – Earl, and “Tongue Tied”.

Retro chart time again - and, twenty-six years ago, the theme tune from a Dutch soap-opera (initially based on an Australian one, and also remade in Germany), several seasons of which I have watched much more recently on DVD, spent its only month at the top of my monthly chart. One of this month's new entries was about to race up and replace it . . . . .

Thanks, Benny - NKOTB had many other sales successes, but "Tonight" was the only one that I ever liked ! It seems to be pretty much the only choice for radio programmers who still want to include their music two to three decades later . . . . .

Now, two thirds of the way through the month, a trip further back in time for another retro chart. My all-time number one was comfortably at the top for the second of six months - and there were several big climbers, and more new entries than there ever are nowadays ! Thirty-two years ago, at the age of twenty, I was sitting my third (final) year exams at University - and this was the music I was enjoying from the Europarade and various charts of Western Europe :

I like all these, especially Pat Benatar's 'We Belong' and Alphaville's 'Sounds Like A Melody'. The latter seems to be a bit forgotten nowadays in contrast to the band's 2 other big hits, 'Big In Japan' and 'Forever Young'.

Thanks, Benny - yes, I think that's probably right. It seems like a very long time since I've heard "Sounds Like A Melody" played on the radio, although it's my favourite of their three big hits. I'm not surprised that UK radio ignores it, however - as it was never released as a single here ! "Big In Japan" hit the UK top ten somewhat later than the rest of Europe, then was followed up with "Forever Young" at much the same time as it was released elsewhere. Which flopped dreadfully here, only just sneaking into the bottom end of the top 100 . . . . . Perhaps surprisingly, however, I have heard "Forever Young" more often on British radio than "Big In Japan" in recent years.

Meanwhile, famous last words . . . . .

Referring to the charts of 1985, I wrote:there were several big climbers, and more new entries than there ever are nowadays !
I hadn't begun to compile my new chart for this month until about a week later, and I then realised that that there would be eight new entries - more than the six back then, and in every other month for almost the last six years. The last time there were eight new entries was when "Titanium" came in at number one . . . . .

Five Eurovision Song Contest entries have previously reached number one in my top forty over nearly thirty-eight years – “Apres Toi” by Vicky Leandros from 1972, “Fur Alle” by Wind from 1985, “Viver Senza Tei” by Furbaz from 1989, “Don’t Ever Cry” by Put from 1993 and “Birds” by Anouk from 2013 – and now a sixth is there. Blanche from Belgium – Ellie Delvaux, whose eighteenth birthday was a few weeks ago, has my 227th chart-topper with “City Lights”. Finishing fourth in this year’s contest, it’s also this month’s Rapid Riser, racing up thirty-four places. Ten other climbers also include all of June’s other new entries – Ozark Henry is up seven to 17 with “A Dream That Never Stops”, Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson move from 17 to 12 with “Symphony” and Roger Whittaker is one place above them with “The Last Farewell”, ascending eleven places . . . . . while, after never going higher than number 53 with any of their previous releases, Steps rise all the way from 29 to number five with “Scared Of The Dark”. Meanwhile, there are more modest moves onward and upward for very old tracks by Raffaella Carra, the Mixtures and Sophie et Magaly, and for more recent releases by Train and Frances – and “You” goes up six places to number six to give Hooverphonic their seventh top ten hit. Their former lead singer Noemie Wolfs has one of three joint longest lasters this time, as “Burning” slides three places to 33 – along with “Fast Car” from Jonas Blue featuring Dakota and “Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots, that spends a twelfth month in the top forty – and she also has a brand new entry, the second highest, at number 22, with “Trying To Pretend”. There’s no pretending that this month sees the greatest number of new hits for almost six years – for the first time since October 2011, there are no fewer than eight chart debuts. Only one of the other seven involves an act that has previously charted – Charlie Puth, who now teams up with former winners of “The X Factor” Little Mix. “Oops” comes in at number 26. Nine places lower, Stan Van Samang and Sarah Bettens arrive with their duet “Little Moon Rises”, and a 1975 instrumental played on the accordion by the Gilde Duo, "Mühle Im Schwarzwald", sneaks in at number 38. But an even older single enters the chart at number 40 – “Puppet On A String”, which won the Eurovision Song Contest fifty years ago for Sandie Shaw. Two more songs from the most recent contest also arrive – Romania’s Ilanca and Alex Florea at 27 with “Yodel It!” and Finland’s Norma John at 30 with “Blackbird” – while the highest new entry is last month’s Chartbuster. Earl, sounding very like Caro Emerald, who she described in a recent interview as “a wonderful artist, fantastic performer and a good songwriter”, crashes in at number 20 with “Tongue Tied”. In contrast, among twenty-one hits dropping down this time, the fastest faller is the former number one from Lost Frequencies featuring Sandro Cavazza, “Beautiful Life”.

Indonesia-born singer and television presenter Sandra Reemer died this month of cancer at the age of sixty-six – her 1990 hit “La Colegiala” returns to the breakers. Four previously overlooked UK number ones from the end of that decade appear for the first time – Britney Spears with “...Baby One More Time”, Eiffel 65 with “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”, Madison Avenue’s “Don’t Call Me Baby” and Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...)” – while nine much more recent releases become potential future hits. Only three of them involve acts that have ever charted in the past – including one who has recently achieved her biggest success in the UK charts following many tragic deaths due to an explosion at the end of one of her concerts. Ariana Grande, who reached number four with “Break Free”, her collaboration with Zedd, may return to the top forty with her new recording of “Beauty And The Beast”, on which she is accompanied by John Legend. Steps could rapidly follow up their long-awaited first hit with a second, “Story Of A Heart” - while a fourth success seems likely for Alle Farben. The first three all reached my top five – and “Little Hollywood” features vocals by Janieck Devy, who was at number one together with Lost Frequencies at the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 with “Reality”. Other collaborations that might soon be chartbound are “Bad Things” from Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello, and “Tuesday” by Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sandoval – and two further entries from this year’s Eurovision Song Contest could be about to join the other three already in the top forty. I have come to somewhat belatedly appreciate the winner from Salvador Sobral of Portugal, “Amar Pelos Dois” - and the . . . . . er, loser by Levina of Germany, “Perfect Life”. The 26-year-old from Bonn impressed me not only with her song, but with her delightfully positive attitude. “Of course I have to thank Ireland for giving us three points - and besides, we did not come in last place, but only in second to last,” she said in a post-contest interview. “If this can continue over the next few years, we will be number one again in twenty-five years!”. Harry Styles needed much less time to have a solo number one in the UK to add to those he had together with the group One Direction – “Sign Of The Times” might also enter my chart in the months ahead. But guaranteed a place there in August is this month’s Chartbuster from Paris-based duo Dorian Lo and César de Rummel, whose latest release has apparently reached number one in Mexico, Russia and the Czech Republic. It is now successful too in parts of Western Europe – including Austria, in which it has spent the last five weeks in the top ten. My Record of the Month for July 2017 is Ofenbach, and “Be Mine”.

I actually discovered "Story Of A Heart" purely by chance - as it was playing on Radio 2 in the local surgery as I waited for an appointment ! I didn't hear any indication of who it was performed by, but checked the playlist when I returned home. Already it seems possible that it will enter my chart this month higher than their current hit (and the only one that seems to have been a downloads / streaming success in the UK) - remarkable for the same group that originally reached the breakers with ten of their much earlier singles, none of them going on to reach my top forty . . . . .

Indeed, one of many television theme tunes that have entered my chart in nearly thirty-eight years !

I had never heard of her before this - but I gather she has made quite a few albums before the one that may or may not turn up by the end of this month . . . . .

It was fortunate that this became available on vinyl before the end of last month, or its upward movement would have been more restricted . . . . . It has only just left the top ten in her homeland this week, after nine weeks there (two of them at number one) and is still hanging around the lower end of the charts of a few other countries. The winner from Portugal seems to have disappeared more quickly, with no real sustained airplay - and the other two that finished ahead on the night have done virtually nothing in the charts !

Now, it's time to return to the distant past, when two of the Eurovision entries that were performed in Harrogate were in the top five of my chart. I was seventeen years old, I was coming right to the end of five years at high school, and it would be a few months until I would begin three years at university. Here's the music I was enjoying way back then . . . . .

Indeed it was ! I think this was a completely different line-up from their medleys of 1960s hits, which they are maybe more well-known for in the UK.

I hadn't spotted the resemblance ! This was one of the biggest of several successes for her in the Netherlands in the 1980s, after which she mostly disappeared to do other things. "Dynamite" went on to eventually reach number one in my chart - it's at 11 in my all-time list. Paris Hilton, of course, also made it to number one with "Stars Are Blind".

Now . . . . . a young Belgian lady with a song she recorded at the age of seventeen is currently at number one. Perhaps history repeats - as the single at the top of this month's second retro chart was also recorded at the age of seventeen by another young Belgian lady ! However, as can be seen from the video, Lio used to dress . . . . . er, less "modestly" than Blanche . . . . .

Beautiful songs by the Bangles and Tanita Tikaram! :P
Indeed they were, Benny. Although "Eternal Flame" was probably the Bangles' biggest hit in most countries, it's actually the lowest-ranking of their four major successes in my all-time list. That's mainly because it only spent five months in my chart - it was at its peak in this month. Both "If She Knew What She Wants" and "Walk Like An Egyptian" peaked slightly lower, but stayed in the chart for eight months each - while "Manic Monday" got to number three, and is currently my number 675 of all time. Meanwhile, Tanita Tikaram has five hits higher than all of these overall - "Twist In My Sobriety" of course being the biggest, at 62 on the all time list.

Now, another month has passed - and while not much new music is impressing me, the fortunes of one group have turned around completely from a couple of decades ago . . . . .

Just one of the top forty occupies the same position as it did in July – and that’s “Puppet On A String” by Sandie Shaw, stuck at number forty after entering last month, fifty years after winning the Eurovision Song Contest. This means that the song that should have won this year’s contest is among seventeen hits moving down – “City Lights” from Blanche falls two places to number three, as one act overtakes her with two different songs. That act is none other than Steps - the British dance-pop group consisting of Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer and Ian “H” Watkins. Almost two decades after having many hits in the UK – ten of which reached my top forty breakers, none of them ever managing to advance into my chart – they recently reformed, and the two most-promoted tracks from their album “Tears On The Dancefloor” are now in the top two spots. “Scared Of The Dark” is one of seventeen climbers, up three places from last month’s number five – and “Story Of A Heart” is the highest of four brand new entries, straight in at number one. It’s the 228th chart-topper in thirty-eight years, and the 23rd to enter in pole position this century – making Steps only the sixth act ever to be at numbers one and two simultaneously. The others were the Pet Shop Boys, Nicole, Tina Cousins, Ann Lee, and (in collaborations with two different acts) Regi. However, the first quintet to achieve this feat could face a strong challenge next month from Alaska singer/songwriter (Kate) Earl. The album whose title track is “Tongue Tied” has finally been released, just in time to enable June’s Chartbuster and July’s highest new entry to race up sixteen places to number four, this month’s Rapid Riser. The second highest climber is Noemie Wolfs, up from 22 to 12 with “Trying To Pretend” – and the former Hooverphonic vocalist also remains in the top forty for a thirteenth month with the longest laster, “Burning”, down six at 39. The fastest faller is Kraftwerk’s “Autobahn”, heading for the hard shoulder with an eleven-place dive to number 20. But three considerably more recent releases arrive in the top forty – Alle Farben and Janieck with “Little Hollywood” at 36, Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sandoval at 28 with “Tuesday”, and last month’s Chartbuster from Ofenbach, “Be Mine”, at 14.

Andrea Jürgens had her first German hit at the age of ten in 1977; sadly, she died this month following double kidney failure aged 50. Five of her German cover versions of well-known hits by other artists return to the breakers – including her former Chartbuster and biggest success in my chart, “Du Wirst Seh’n” (Madonna’s “You’ll See”), and her other former top forty success “Japanese Boy” (originally by Aneka). Her version of Tol and Tol’s “Eleni”, which belatedly reached the breakers last year, could be chartbound again, as might her translations of the Audrey Landers hits “Manuel Goodbye” and “Playa Blanca”. This month’s search for neglected gems focuses on the earlier years of the present decade, as “Baby Come Home”, “Happiness” and “Je Cours” may soon be added to several hits already by the Scissor Sisters, Stromae and Hooverphonic – and there are two new arrivals in the breakers for more recent offerings. Those are “On My Mind” by London-based trio Disciples (Nathan Vincent Duvall, Gavin Koolmon and Luke McDermott) and “All Or Nothing” from Lost Frequencies featuring Axel Ehnström. However, they are at numbers 104 and 105 respectively in the extended chart – not near enough to the top forty to be guaranteed a place there in September. So the new Chartbuster is the biggest climber into the top 100 – and, as I never liked any of the vastly successful tracks by the pop boy-band, currently apparently on a “hiatus”, of which he was a member, it is perhaps surprising that his first solo single, which briefly topped the UK chart, has managed to impress me so much. Moving from 112 to 67 on its way into my top forty, my Record of the Month for August 2017 is Harry Styles, and “Sign Of The Times”.

Great top 2 by Steps, 'Story Of A Heart' is very ABBA-esque (as it was written by Björn and Benny) and 'Scared Of The Dark' is an amazing pop dance song.
The breaker's chart includes some great 90s classics, and I also love your two retro #1s from 7 and 27 years ago.

Thanks, Benny, You probably already knew, but I have only just discovered, that "Story Of A Heart" originally appeared on an album credited to "Benny Andersson Band" in 2009.

I have just realised something strange - this is currently the only hit in my top forty that isn't available on vinyl ! And hopefully it eventually will be, when Clean Bandit release their next album . . . . . It has been said for some time that this format is experiencing a revival - but it hasn't impacted on my chart so much until now.

Now, a third of the way through August, it's time to revisit a period when I doubt I was even aware of the existence of CDs - singles were vinyl-only, although it's possible that shops in bigger cities than where I lived were beginning to stock a few CD albums. I was twenty-two years old and coming to the end of my first year at work, advancing from "second assistant" to "first assistant" - and this was the music I was enjoying thirty-one years ago . . . . .

Thanks again, Benny . . . . . Madonna had a total of thirty-seven breakers, twenty-eight of which went on to enter my chart - but "Live To Tell" was only her 26th most successful track !

Another third of the month has passed - and it's time for another retro chart. This time, a dig deep into the archives, going right back to the beginning of the second year in which I compiled my monthly chart. It was still only a top thirty, and dominated by hits from the UK and Ireland - as those were the only weekly charts I was listening to way back then, at the age of fifteen. In this one, one of six singles that had appeared ever since the start finally reached the top. Not many others would ever take more than a year to get there ! Here's the music I was enjoying thirty-seven years ago . . . . .

Thanks again, Benny - I think all of those were successes in various parts of Europe, while many of the others probably didn't make much or any impact on the charts apart from in Ireland and/or the UK . . . . .

Now, it's back to the present - although there are some 1970s and early 1980s singles that are still doing quite well in my current chart ! And there's another brand new number one - but probably not one that is particularly well-known on UKmix. It's from an album that I see made it to number 81 in the UK's albums chart. So it wasn't just me that bought it - dozens of others did too . . . . .

Two Eurovision Song Contest entries, fifty years apart, are the only non-movers in my top forty this month – Sandie Shaw clings on to the number 40 position with “Puppet On A String” for a third month, while the former number one “City Lights” remains at number three for Blanche. That means that there is another new number one, for the fifth consecutive month – and the battle was between two former Chartbusters. July’s Record of the Month, “Be Mine” from Ofenbach, races up twelve places to the runner-up spot – but June’s ascends three places into pole position for Earl. “Tongue Tied” becomes my 229th number one, and the first for the 35-year-old singer/songwriter from Alaska. Eight other climbers include major moves for two of last month’s new entries – "Tuesday" races up nineteen places to number nine for Burak Yeter featuring Danelle Sandoval, while the Rapid Riser is “Little Hollywood”. The fourth hit for Alle Farben, and the second featuring Janieck Devy on vocals, could be on its way to the top five – like all of their previous successes – as it soars up from 36 to 14. Meanwhile, none of this month’s three new entries involve artists who have ever charted before. Nathan Vincent Duvall, Gavin Koolmon and Luke McDermott form the Disciples - who arrive at 36 with “On My Mind”.....Machine Gun Kelly featuring Camila Cabello are in at 30 with “Bad Things”.....and the highest debut is at 25 for last month’s Chartbuster from the former One Direction member Harry Styles, “Sign Of The Times”. All of this leaves twenty-five hits moving down – the fastest faller dives eight places to 31 for Julien Dore’s former number one “Le Lac”, and the longest laster is another French act. Kungs, featuring Cookin On 3 Burners, slide five places to number 39 after thirteen months in the top forty with "This Girl".

This month’s search for overlooked potential hits from some time ago focuses on the year 1989 – and finds Tina Turner with “The Best”, Zouk Machine with “Maldon”, Gladys Knight’s Bond movie theme “Licence To Kill”, Jessica’s “C’est la Vie Mon Cheri” and Johnny McEvoy singing about “Michael”. All of these enter the top forty breakers for the first time, and could progress into the chart in the months ahead. So might five rather more recent releases – although two of them, both from former chart-toppers, have taken some time to impress me since the releases of their latest albums on the very same day almost a year ago ! “It’s Happening Again” could be an aptly-named song from Agnes Obel, who reached number one in my chart with “Just So” and also peaked at number three with “Riverside” – while “Million Reasons” is one of the tracks promoted from Lady GaGa’s most recent release “Joanne”. Three of her eleven hits to date have made it to pole position – “Poker Face”, “The Edge Of Glory” and “Alejandro (Don’t Call My Name)”. Meanwhile, Charli XCX, the 25-year-old singer/songwriter from Cambridge, accompanied Icona Pop on their number one “I Love It”, and followed that up with the top five success “Boom Clap” – her latest offering “Boys” seems to be performing better on sales than on streams, but may be about to give her a third hit in my top forty. And, having replaced the dollar sign in her name with a traditional letter S since her three former breakers, 30-year-old Kesha could be about to enter my chart for the first time with “Praying”. But guaranteed a place there in October are two-thirds of the Swedish group that went to number one in 2012 and 2013 with the instrumental “Greyhound”. Steve Angello has since departed from the Swedish House Mafia, leaving a duo who previously had the Chartbuster in October 2015 with “Sun Is Shining”. This peaked at number 11 in my top forty – but their most recent single could improve on that as their second Chartbuster, having already reached number one in Germany and Austria. Moving up the charts in several other countries too, my Record of the Month for September 2017 is Axwell /\ Ingrosso, and “More Than You Know”.

Thanks again, Benny - I've heard the second Steps single played on the radio a few times, but unfortunately that doesn't ever seem to have translated into significant sales, or even streams . . . . .

Now . . . . . we're about a third of the way through the month, and it's time for the first September retro chart. I was twenty-six, I was somewhat reluctantly working in London, and I was obtaining quite a few older singles that had previously eluded me - so there are plenty of those appearing this month. Unusually, more than a third of the hits are sung in languages other than English ! For the second time this year, it's back to 1990 . . . . .

Thanks, Benny - it's one of mine too ! Both this and the two Vaya Con Dios hits are in, or near, my top 100 of all time.

And so are several of the singles that appeared in my second retro chart for this month. Thirty-three years ago, I was twenty, about to begin my final year at university, and already enjoying music from all over Europe - but especially from the Dutch and Irish charts ! A lot of my favourites from September 1984 were charting in these countries (and others!) - and here they all are . . . . .

'Guardian Angel/ Jenseits von Eden' is great, there's also an Italian verison called 'La valle dell'Eden' which is my favourite one out of the three.
Surprised to see ABBA's 'Cassandra', which was the b-side to 'The Day Before You Came'. There was a Dutch cover version of that song, is that the reason for its appearance on your chart?
