I wrote:.....the highest newcomer by far is the fourteenth involving Regi Penxten. .....three came from his album “Registrated”, on which he was joined by Wout and Caren Meynen for “Larger Than Life”, choirgirls Scala for “I Fail” and Bart Peeters for “A-A-A-Anthem”, which crashed into my chart at number one in January 2008.
and I wrote:That was my Chartbuster just over two years ago, in October 2008 - and it went on to peak at number five.
A double clue there to the next year which now becomes the subject of a mid-month trip back in time - and, in this instance, the most recent year to be covered so far! As tracks continue to score points for as long as they remain in my monthly top forty, ideally I feel that I should wait until everything originally recorded in that year has dropped out before completing a year end chart. (Of course, it will be possible to later update the annual charts postings in the event that tracks from older years re-enter, or appear for the first time - and indeed I have a note to do that at some point to reflect climbs in 1988 and 1989 for the hits by Eddi Reader / Fairground Attraction and Malcolm McLaren which recently added a few more months, and points, to their totals!) However, there are now only two 2008 recordings remaining in my current chart - and it is likely that both will drop out this coming month, so the annual chart for 2008 can reasonably be finalised now.

What, then, of the year 2008? It was an interesting year for charts, as downloads were beginning to make much more of an impact - in different ways in different countries. But it was a disappointing year for weekly chart shows on the radio. Germany's, on Eins-Live, had been cancelled.....Ireland's, on 2fm, was down to an hour in length.....Belgium's deteriorated significantly, with a return to Saturdays in its final year on Radio Donna.....and, for those who, like me, doubted that the quality of the BBC Radio One chart show could plummet further down the pan than it had with JK and Joel, the arrival of Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates proved that it could - and I ceased to tune in, after being a regular listener for nearly thirty years. Only the Dutch top 40 continued from strength to strength on Friday afternoons on Radio 538 - but I also discovered, for the first time, a weekly broadcast of the Danish top 40 on The Voice.

So, it was mainly from these chart shows - and the Eurovision Song Contest, in which there were several good entries in that year - that I discovered the ninety-two tracks reaching the breakers. Fifty-seven of these went on to reach my top forty.....thirty made the top ten.....while eight rose all the way to number one. And the entire progress (or otherwise!) of each and every one of them can be seen from earlier on in this thread, as I had already begun to post my complete monthly charts here - although I hadn't yet got into the routine of adding the latest one in within seconds of each new month beginning (UK time!), as I do whenever possible nowadays. Oddly, 2008 seems to have been a year from which I liked a lot of short singles - it only took five and a half hours today to play the complete top 100 of the year (including, at the bottom, eight of the best tracks that I also bought on CD singles, but which failed to even reach the breakers) from the YouTube links below.

Without further ado, then, the countdown of my favourites from 2008 reads as follows:

Jungle Drum! 8-)

Hurts at last!
Caro's Stuck great. Nice to a very high entry - though she looks a lot better than the song sounds.

Surprised you didn't chart Sophie/ Armin sooner - you just missed out on voting it on the Pop Chart.

I wrote:DKS might also chart in the months ahead with “Sing With A Swing” - a composition that originally entered at number five in October 1983, but went no higher for the Broads as “Sing-Sing-Sing”.
And that's the second randomly-chosen year for this month, which I spent five hours revisiting tonight. Back then, I was concluding my first and beginning my second year at university - and so I had plenty of spare time to add a few more chart shows to my weekly routine! In the previous few years, I had only listened to those of the UK and Ireland - but then I discovered the Nederlandse Top 40 and Tipparade on Fridays, the TROS Top 50 on Thursday afternoons (plus the Dutch-language top ten and Polderpopparade on Thursday mornings!) and the Europarade at lunchtime on Sundays. Most of my top hundred of 1983, I heard in some or more of these charts - or in the Eurovision Song Contest, or on television. And, while I've never really been a buyer of albums at all (unless, as is increasingly happening now, that's the only way of obtaining "singles" on CD and/or vinyl!), there were two 1983 LPs from each of which several tracks, mostly not singles, reached my monthly chart - which I had extended to a top fifty. One of these was by the previous year's Eurovision winner - while the other was by a Dutch flautist whose first single, a concerto in E minor written centuries earlier, replaced Michael Jackson at number one in her homeland, and topped the charts in Belgium too. That spent nine months at number one in my chart - so, not surprisingly, it's at the top of this top 100 of the year as well. But will many readers remember this.....or have even heard of it? (It did get a UK release, but wasn't a hit here) And what about my other ninety-nine hits of 1983? Sixteen, unfortunately, seem to be too obscure to have been made available on YouTube - although I was surprised that a few of the others actually were there! - but all the rest can be heard on the links below.....

Yes......looking back at this, I must admit that I was probably further away from the UK chart in my tastes in music in 1983 than in most years - with a lot of tracks coming from the Dutch charts, which I was hearing for the first time. Indeed, only four of my top forty of the year (Thompson Twins at 11, Trans X at 14, Tracey Ullman at 32 and Nick Heyward at 36) reached the UK top 40! :o

I had never heard of Kaya Jones (or indeed most other Pussycat Dolls individually by name) before - and was very pleasantly surprised to find that she was so attractive in this video!

Although there are a still a couple of days in which I will be finalising my December chart, it's looking extremely likely that, unusually, there will be several very high new entries this month.....

^She was a PC Doll before they were famous and left after only recording two tracks on the first album. She appeared in one video but not as a member. So i've not heard of her either!

Of course Blue Monday, They Don't Know (you know Kirsty MacColl did the original, right?), We Are Detective, La Serenissima, Joe Fagin, Nena, The Assembly, OMD, McLaren, Bonnie and Relax (100?? :o ) are all great. Nicole and Trio is good - didn't know they recorded together. That Jonathan King theme tune is fantastic - loved that show - the theme only scraped the top 100.

Yes indeed - although I might not have found out about this until some years later. I didn't actually get a copy of the original Kirsty MacColl version until August 1995 (at a record fair, I suspect) - as it made a high debut in the breakers in September 1995 (at number four - only just losing out to Jam Tronik's "An Angel" on becoming my Record of the Month!) and then spent the next four months in my top forty, peaking at number 14. Of course, in the annual charts I have been posting, it went into 1979 .

I believe I read somewhere that, as Tracey Ullman couldn't reach the highest note of the song, it was the relevant section of Kirsty MacColl's that was slipped in instead..... Oddly, that's the only part of "They Don't Know" that I've never really liked - back then, more often than not, I used to mute the sound for those couple of seconds!

My new chart will be posted here in twenty-four hours from now! - and it can already be revealed that there is a new number one, as Yolanda Be Cool and D-Cup have taken quite a dive from the top.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In my final chart of 2010, there are twenty-three tracks moving down, eight going up, two non-movers and seven new entries - and Caro Emerald has one of each! Her former number one “A Night Like This” is the fastest faller and longest laster, diving eighteen places to 34 in its ninth month - and that’s now one place above “Back It Up”, which climbs five notches from its number 40 entry position in November. “That Man” spends a second month at number ten, while her current Dutch hit “Stuck” makes an impressive new entry at number five. In most months, that would be the top newcomer - but this time it’s only the fifth highest new entry! This has never happened before, but the top five are all brand new entries - and the top four come from acts making their chart debut. DKS arrive one place higher than the Broads reached twenty-seven years ago with “Sing-Sing-Sing”, retitling it “Sing With A Swing”. This piece was originally written back in the 1930s by Louis Prima (born 1910, died 1978). For the new entry at number three, French band Yelle join forces with Italian production duo the Crookers on “Cooler Cooleur”, from their recent album “Tons Of Friends”. One of those friends would seem to be Kid Cudi, with whom they had a major international hit two years ago with “Day ‘n Nite”. Boston-born record producer Armand van Helden was involved with a few UK number one hits in the previous decade - the earliest being “Professional Widow” by Tori Amos from January 1997 - and recently came close to having another one, with Duck Sauce. “Barbra Streisand”, using much of Boney M’s “Gotta Go Home”, now crashes into my top forty at number two. But straight in at number one - and making an even bigger climb than Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind” in the extended chart, as it was November’s number 111 - is “Hello” by Martin Solveig and Dragonette. The thirty-four-year-old French DJ and producer is already in the top ten in his homeland - on both the downloads and the physical sales charts! - together with a three-piece Canadian, but now London-based, group. It’s the second time that a song with this title has entered my top forty at number one - but theirs is not otherwise related to that of the once-seen, never-forgotten Twinkle.
The two other new arrivals this month are second hits for Miley Cyrus and Chairlift. The eighteen-year-old “Hannah Montana” actress follows up her number five “See You Again” with a number 12 entry for November’s Chartbuster “Who Owns My Heart”, while the Brooklyn-based electronic pop group are a long way from matching their number one “Bruises”, as “Evident Utensil” is in at number 40. Meanwhile, the Rapid Riser is Katie Melua, racing up eleven places to number 20 with her album track “A Moment Of Madness”. Album tracks and old singles alike have recently been appearing all over the UK Top 200 for the Beatles, as their back catalogue has suddenly become available for download - and their one and only hit from my chart, “Hey Jude”, which got to number 20 in 1997, now returns to the top forty breakers. Also there are eight brand new potential hits. Lady GaGa could soon have a seventh success with “Dance In The Dark”, Caro Emerald a fifth with “Riviera Life”, and Jacqueline (Govaert) a second with “Big World”. Dance tracks from Afrojack featuring Eva Simons, Alex Gaudino, Markus Schulz and Mike Candys featuring Jack Holiday could also be on their way to my top forty in the months ahead - the last being a new version of the former hit by Rondo Veneziano. However, the guaranteed new entry in January 2011 is from the same genre - and, although it’s credited to a new name to my chart, it’s not exactly a new artist. Forty-year-old Dutch producer and DJ Ron Van Den Beuken previously reached number 26 with “Far Away” and number five with “Life’s Too Short”, accompanied by Nicole Tyler and Maarten de Jong respectively - and another of his projects has made regular appearances in the singles sales top 100 in his homeland during the last eight years. Several of those releases have featured in the Tipparade, and a few have even reached the top forty - in which the latest is currently one of his biggest successes. My Record of the Month for December 2010 is Clokx, with “Catch Your Fall”.
So, for the first trip back in time this month, it's a hundred-year voyage back to 1910..... :o
Er, no! The year is 1978 - and even that pre-dates all of my 376 monthly charts so far. And also, I strongly suspect, the births of many UKmix users! However, it was (as I have previously mentioned) the year in which, at the age of thirteen/fourteen, I first took an interest in pop music and charts. Specifically, this was the UK Top 20 - and, by the end of the year, the Top 40 - as counted down on Radio One by Simon Bates on Sunday evenings.
Much more recent research has revealed that several of those hits were actually 1977 recordings - which will appear in due course, when that year is featured. However, those from the UK charts of later in 1978, and into 1979, fully deserve inclusion in this countdown of my 1978 favourites. Also here are some tracks recorded in 1978 that charted in other countries, which I discovered later - in some instances, much later! - plus, as always, a few that I found in other places, such as the Eurovision Song Contest. But not many fall into these latter categories - so perhaps (hopefully!) the majority will be relatively well-known.
In total, sixty 1978 tracks made it into my monthly charts, mostly in 1979 and the early 1980's - and largely when I actually obtained them on seven-inch singles (or, more rarely, albums). That's why only one track from this year reached number one in my charts - and that wasn't until 1983, when I finally found an LP containing it! But sixteen others made it into my monthly top ten, despite facing competition from what, at the time, were more recent releases from years already covered in these mid-month features.
Completing the top hundred of 1978 are forty tracks which have reached my top 40 breakers - or, it has to be assumed, "would" have done. Only six of the top hundred are nowhere to be found on YouTube - so, from the links below (and bearing in mind that records were generally shorter then than they are now!) the other ninety-four fitted perfectly into five hours this evening, in which I listened again to my favourites of thirty-two years ago. And here they are.....
A double clue to the second yearly retro chart to be featured this month - as today I have spent six hours listening again to my top hundred of thirteen years ago. Seventy-two singles from 1997 entered my monthly top forty - an annual total only beaten once since then - and half of them reached the top ten, with eight going all the way to number one. Completing this top hundred are twenty-eight of the fifty other tracks from that year that ground to a halt in the top forty breakers, some of which came quite close to the chart.
Like other years near to it, this one is very much dominated by Eurodance / Europop music, especially from the German charts - with only a fairly limited number of exceptions. And even some of the tracks that might not fit so obviously into these categories succeeded in my chart largely due to dance remixes, reflected in some of the YouTube links below!
Unlike other years, however, there is a surprisingly low number of artists in the top hundred. While fifty take one place each, the other fifty positions are shared by twenty acts making more than one appearance. Among these, Mr President are in four times - but Aqua's first album was released in 1997, and no less than eight tracks from it are here. Most of those are easy to spot from the "highest position" column.....they're the ones peaking at number seven!
Also unlike other years, all of the top hundred are available on YouTube.....well, give or take two medleys. The one at number six by Nicole is actually about eleven minutes long, probably too lengthy to appear there in full - but the shorter, later version I have substituted is substantially similar to part of it. And I'm almost sure that there should really be more than one former hit by Freiheit on their hit mix at number 39!!!
Here, then, is the complete countdown of my favourites from 1997.
This brings back some memories! Many Eurodance songs, most of which I don't like anymore from today's point of view, but there are some exceptions. Also great songs by the Mavericks, Bell Book & Candle, Janet Jackson & Chumbawamba.
There was more action than ever before at the top end of December’s chart, with all of the top five being new entries - including Martin Solveig and Dragonette, at number one with "Hello", which has now also become the first number one of 2011 in both Belgium and the Netherlands - but now, in the first chart of the new year, there is more inaction than ever, as the top twelve all remain exactly as they were! Only one previous chart can come close to matching such a lack of movement in the upper range - and that was back in June 2001, when the top nine hits were unchanged from the previous month. Then, a track that was a breaker again quite recently, “Turn The Tide” by Sylver, was the highest new entry, just below all those non-movers, at number ten - and again this time, the highest of just four new entries is right under those motionless twelve. It’s “Big World” - the second hit for Jacqueline Govaert, the Dutch 28-year-old former lead singer of Krezip - and although this has been less successful in her homeland than “Overrated”, it has already overtaken that former Chartbuster in my top forty. Indeed, “Overrated” is one of nineteen tracks moving down this month - and, falling two places to 23, it looks like becoming the first Chartbuster to miss my top twenty for nearly seven years. Last month’s Chartbuster has already avoided this - Clokx debut at number 20 with “Catch Your Fall” - although the other two new entries this time are rather lower down. Polarkreis 18 previously peaked at number 10 with “Allein Allein”, and now follow that up with “Unendliche Sinfonie”, in at 37 - while Caro Emerald adds yet another hit to her collection. “Riviera Life”, new at 40, joins longest laster “A Night Like This”, down four at 38 in its tenth month, Rapid Riser “Back It Up”, racing up twenty places to number 15, and two of those non-movers - “That Man” at ten and “Stuck” at five. She becomes the first act to have five tracks in my top forty at the same time since Rednex in February 1996 - when “Wish You Were Here” and “Wild ‘N Free” made their last appearances, and “Rolling Home”, “Bottleneck Bob” and “The Ultimate Rednex Megamix” were all new entries.
Meanwhile, only four other hits move up this month - Katie Melua with “A Moment Of Madness”, Amy MacDonald with “This Pretty Face”, Stromae’s “Te Quiero” and Chairlift’s “Evident Utensil” - while the fastest faller is Kylie Minogue, as “All The Lovers” dives ten places to number 33. However, three former hits could be beginning a journey back into my chart in new versions. Milk and Sugar previously revived John Paul Young’s “Love Is In The Air” - and could do likewise with the former number one by Vaya Con Dios, “Nah Neh Nah”; a new version of the Pet Shop Boys’ first hit, “West End Girls” was a bonus track on their most recent, and least successful, single “Together”; while the original vocalist on Iio’s “Rapture”, Nadia Ali, has reworked that former top twenty hit. And there are five brand new potential future hits this time. Hurts continue to slide slowly towards the top forty with “Wonderful Life”, and could now also be on the way there with “Stay” - a different song from the two former hits also bearing this title, from Bonnie Bianco and Pierre Cosso and Sash featuring LaTrec. Mason is looking to follow up the number 27 hit “Perfect (Exceeder)” with “Runaway”, while David Guetta joins forces with Rihanna on “Who’s That Chick”. If that charts, it would be his fifth hit, and her second. The top two new breakers this month are the only ones involving artists who have not previously appeared - the second highest being “Kentish Town Waltz”, a recent Irish success for Dublin-born Imelda May. But the first Chartbuster of the new year, guaranteed to be a new entry in my February 2011 chart, is a collaboration between two artists who have previously reached number one in the UK - and other countries - separately. Could they now also do that together? Next month’s top forty will see the first hit in my chart for a 27-year-old London-born singer, songwriter and producer, and the fifteenth for a 42-year-old, multi-talented Australian performer. My Record of the Month for January 2011 is Taio Cruz and Kylie Minogue, with “Higher”.
