It’s exactly four years since any single spent five months at number one in my chart - Holly Dolly climbed to the top with “Dolly’s Song” in December 2006, and was still there in April of the following year. Now Martin Solveig and Dragonette match the dancing donkey, as “Hello” remains in pole position yet again, one of just three non-movers this month. It has been a major hit in a variety of European countries throughout these five months - starting off in France, and finally reaching the top five in Germany only last week! Within my new top five, one strong contender for next month’s number one is the highest of nine new entries - Basto!’s “Gregory’s Theme”, March’s Chartbuster, is straight in at number three. There are also chart debuts inside the top twenty for Eindhoven-born Sander Van Doorn and Belgian group Hooverphonic, with “Love Is Darkness” and “The Night Before” at 13 and 16 respectively - but there’s a more impressive new entry, and a third hit, for Dash Berlin and Emma Hewitt at number eight. They previously had a number one in my chart with “Waiting” - could “Disarm Yourself” give them another?

Meanwhile, in the bottom half of the top forty, there are two further chart debuts - Nashville, Tennessee group Lady Antebellum with “Need You Now” at 40 and Miami, Florida-based German trance DJ Markus Schulz with “Rain” at 35. There’s a third hit for Sara Bareilles with “King Of Anything” at 36, a fourth for Jennifer Lopez with “On The Floor” at 25, and an eighth success for Katie Melua with “The Flood” at 38. Although this was the first single from her most recent album, two other songs on it have already charted - including “A Happy Place”, this month’s fastest faller, which is now placed just above “The Flood” at number 37. Among nineteen other tracks moving down are joint longest lasters “We No Speak Americano” by Yolanda Be Cool featuring D-Cup, and “Come Home” by Amatorski, making their ninth appearances at 32 and 35 respectively. Just eight hits are moving up this month - and the Rapid Riser is “Coming Home”, as Diddy Dirty Money featuring Skylar Grey race up twelve places to number 28.

Only two acts with previous successes in my charts are among the month's new potential future hits. Lady GaGa was born in 1986 - so she would only have been four years old when Roxette first impressed me, with "Dangerous". However, she has had six top forty entries (including number ones "Poker Face" and "Alejandro") in just over two years, whereas only two other hits have followed so far for the Swedish duo - "Crash Boom Bang" and "Milk And Toast And Honey". So they are looking now for their fourth and fifth with "No One Makes It On Her Own" and "She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio)", both of which are tracks from their new album "Charm School". While Hooverphonic’s first hit, a new entry this month, could rapidly be followed by a second, “Anger Never Dies”, neither the Subs nor Gregor Salto have made it to the top forty. Could it be third time lucky for “The Face Of The Planet”, or second time lucky for “We Get High”?

The other four new breakers are by female singers, all appearing for the first time. 30-year-old Beth Ditto is currently in the top ten in Belgium with “I Wrote The Book”; 18-year-old Alexis Jordan has already enjoyed more widespread success with debut single “Happiness”, while 21-year-old Alexandra Stan is becoming the latest Romanian artist to hit the charts in many countries beyond her homeland. The second highest new breaker, "Mr Saxobeat" stands a very good chance of entering my top forty. But guaranteed a place there in May is a multi-talented 39-year-old. A reality television show star from two decades ago, long before such programmes became commonplace (who remembers “The Living Soap”?) - she has since been a portrait artist, agony aunt, writer and performer. April 2011’s Chartbuster is apparently featured in a two-hour show she wrote, “Therapy Rocks”, which premiered at the New York Musical Theatre a few months ago. However, while the song only appeared on a CD album (obtainable through her own website) more recently, it is at least three years old - and possibly older. A live performance at Clapham Grand, London, seems to be the only version available on YouTube - but the studio recording can now be downloaded from Amazon. My Record of the Month for April 2011 is Karen Bishko, with “Gonna Be”.

You charted The Flood as a Breaker before, right? Why is it suddenly a hit now?

Not entirely unusually (!), "The Flood" has been making a slow climb up the breakers for the last eight months (40 39 38 29 22 17 08 05, actual positions 125 124 123 114 107 102 93 78) and only now I feel that I like it enough to give it a top forty entry! In the meantime, of course, I've enjoyed two of her other album tracks considerably more.

That's not even the slowest top forty entry this time - which would be Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" (which needed almost as long to reach the German Top 100, after initially missing out there by just a few places!). It took ten months to make it through the breakers into my top forty (34 27 21 20 20 15 10 07 05 02, actual positions 119 112 106 105 105 100 92 87 87 70)

I complied a feature covering "most months in the breakers before entering the top forty (or not!)" two years ago, here. The particular circumstances which allowed just five tracks.....

ADAGIO - Tiesto
IF I WERE YOU - Candee Jay
LIVING ON VIDEO - Lazard
MY FIRST LOVE - Lovestern Galaktika Project
WHERE ARE YOU NOW - Ian Van Dahl

to break the rules and spend thirteen months in the breakers have not since recurred - although three more recent breakers:

POISON PRINCE Amy MacDonald
TAKE ON ME Topmodelz
VOYAGE VOYAGE Bananarama

have remained for the maximum twelve months, before not charting!

In the months ahead, of course, "On The Floor" may well overtake one or both of the two tracks currently just above it in this list!

In beginning to prepare for the first of this month's Retro top 100s, for early next week - covering a year in which there were ninety hits and breakers - I'm just considering the forty-six other CD singles I bought from that year, and finding that.....most of them, I can barely even remember now! :o

I suppose that confirms to some extent why I didn't regard them as being quite good enough to even reach the breakers back then.....but I suspect that I'm going to find it more difficult (or, at least, time-consuming) than usual to decide which ten of the forty-six deserve a place in the remaining positions 91-100 of the year.....

And there's the clue to the first of this month's mystery Retro years - as today, using the YouTube links below, I spent six hours revisiting my favourite tracks of five years ago. What can be said of the year 2006.....? Well, not much that I haven't previously said about other nearby years in the most recently-ended decade (the "noughties", "nillies" or whatever it should be called!). I was tuning in then, as now, to the weekly chart shows of the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands - so these countries provided the majority of the ninety tracks that reached my monthly breakers lists, including the fifty-seven that went on to reach the top forty chart.

Perhaps surprisingly, only seven of those fifty-seven hits didn't make the top twenty - as can be seen in some of the first charts I posted at the very start of this thread in mid 2007, many of the top songs of 2006 were still slowly sliding down the bottom twenty, as they completed their very long chart-runs! Partly for this reason, some of the singles with higher peaks that disappeared more quickly ended up lower down in the overall ranking for the year. Naturally, those don't include Holly Dolly - with five months at number one, "Dolly Song" has to be the record of the year, doesn't it.....? But some of its closer challengers may be more unexpected, as can now be revealed!

I wrote:Lady GaGa was born in 1986 - so she would only have been four years old when Roxette first impressed me, with "Dangerous".
So the second "randomly"-chosen retro year for April is 1986. Twenty-five years ago, I was working as an audit assistant, and studying for the first set of Chartered Accountancy exams - which I sat in the November. So I might not have had as much spare time to listen to music as in the previous few years - but I was still compiling a monthly top fifty, and this was the third year (after 1983 and 1985) from which exactly one hundred singles reached those charts. Or did they? On closer inspection, the boundaries between the years in the mid-eighties were not quite as clearly defined as more recently. In my previously-posted top 100 of 1987, for example, it's just possible that there's the occasional release that really "should" have gone into an earlier year - and didn't because such years, like 1986, were already "full". Here too, there are at least a couple of songs that were first issued somewhere, even on an album only, prior to 1986 - their inclusion corresponding more with their UK release. However, so that all of my "hits" make it into a top hundred of a year, rather than just a few missing out, I don't propose to switch any more between these years from where they are currently placed!
In 1986, I was tuning in to the weekly chart shows of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria and (when possible) Germany - so most of my choices were successes (major or minor) in one or more of those countries. Or they might have been big sellers in one of the other six lands that were also included in the Europarade, which I was still listening to on Metro Radio and TROS-Radio (plus SR-1, when atmospheric conditions meant this was audible!) And, as often happened, several had connections with television programmes - including the Eurovision Song Contest. There are songs in a wide variety of languages - including some that charted in different languages in different territories - and somewhere here there are, incredibly, not one but two princesses! All in all, this was one of the very best years for music for me - with my top twelve of the year all making it into my top hundred of all time. Only one other year, 1983 ( posted a few months ago ), can beat that - with the top thirteen of that year all qualifying. Unfortunately, seven of the top hundred of 1986 aren't available on YouTube - but all the rest are, and they filled six hours very nicely today (the average song length, at the top end especially, being greater than in most other years!) So.....here they are:

Many classics, including one of the best songs by ELO (sadly, it wasn't as high on the international charts as it should have been), a fun song by EAV and the great Italian classic "Ti Sento" (which was mutilated by Scooter a few year ago).

It did lose rather a lot in undergoing the Scooter treatment - although I recall that their version either used the original vocals or re-recorded ones by the original singer, who was individually credited!

potojr wrote:Audit assistant and the first set of ACA exams, yay!!! I was doing this 10 years ago, how time flies... What are you doing these days, still in practice?
Having taken "early retirement" at the age of 28 in the last recession, I still do a little related work now - around one day per week, on average.

potojr wrote:Also, you like Coming Home (Jeanny part 2), how about part 1, was that released at the back end of 1985?
Oh yes! "Jeanny" peaked at number 10 in my monthly chart, so when I cover 1985, hopefully at some point in the next few months, it will be quite a bit higher there than the follow-up is here.

"Jeanny" first entered the Austrian chart (which I was able to hear from 11pm - 1am, UK time, on Friday nights back then) in the second last week of 1985, but naturally took a while to spread to some other countries. It eventually flopped terribly in the UK, despite his successes with "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Vienna Calling".

Twelve climbers in this month’s chart include all nine of April’s new entries - and four of them are now right at the top. Hooverphonic have the Rapid Riser, as “The Night Before” leaps twelve places to number four; “Love Is Darkness” races up from thirteen to three for Sander Van Doorn featuring Carol Lee; Dash Berlin featuring Emma Hewitt just miss out on a second chart-topper, as “Disarm Yourself” ascends from eight to two; and last month’s highest new entry climbs two places to become my 183rd number one - Belgium’s Basto!, with the instrumental “Gregory’s Theme”. Completing the top five is the highest of just four new entries - Alexandra Stan makes her debut with “Mr Saxobeat”, and must stand a chance of improving upon the best placing ever achieved in my top forty by a Romanian act in the months ahead. Her target to beat is the number three peak of Edward Maya’s “Stereo Love”, from just over a year ago. Meanwhile, Hooverphonic earn two simultaneous top ten entries, as “Anger Never Dies” crashes in at number eight - and the other two newcomers this month also arrive inside the top twenty, in the form of Karen Bishko at 15 with “Gonna Be” and Alexis Jordan at 20 with “Happiness”. The only two non-movers in the top forty this time are just below the top ten - it’s a third month at number 11 for Sebastian Cruz featuring Miryel with “Chasing Dreams”, and a second month at number 12 for Eric Prydz with “Niton (The Reason)” - which leaves twenty-two tracks descending. After five months at number one, Martin Solveig and Dragonette have taken quite a dive, landing at number nine with “Hello” - but the fastest faller is one of three hits now tumbling downwards for Caro Emerald. “Back It Up” slides fifteen places to number 37 - however, her album has now spent fifteen months inside the top ten in the Netherlands! That was one of several countries in which Australians Yolanda Be Cool featuring D-Cup reached number one last year - and “We No Speak Americano”, also a former number one in my chart, is now the longest laster, slipping one place to number 33 as it makes its tenth appearance.

Two acts appear in the top forty breakers for the first time ever this month. The Belgian electro rock band Goose (Mickael Karkousse, Dave Martijn, Tom Coghe, and Bert Libee) are currently charting in their homeland with the instrumental title track of their latest album, “Synrise” - while “Riverside”, not even remotely similar to the former breaker with the same title by Sidney Samson, is also now a hit there for Copenhagen, Denmark-born Agnes Obel. The “classical folk” composition by the 30-year-old singer/songwriter came close to topping the Danish singles chart a few weeks ago, and could now be on the way to my top forty. After a very long absence, Stars On 45 might reappear in my chart with “45” - new mixes of the linking music from the Stars On 45 medleys from the early eighties - while Laura V is the latest vocalist to team up with 34-year old trance producer Armin Van Buuren. The recent Dutch hit “Drowning” is his ninth breaker, and could become his sixth top forty entry. The other five all reached my top five, the last one being “Not Giving Up On Love”, featuring vocals by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. She narrowly missed out on a second number one last year with “Bittersweet” - while Lady GaGa succeeded with “Alejandro”. Although her latest release “Judas” has not performed as well in the UK charts - at least initially! - as most of its predecessors, it is the second most promising of this month’s new breakers. The 25-year-old New Yorker now has three potential future hits - as do Inna and Hurts. Their latest releases have continued to rise steadily towards the top forty in recent months, with “Stay” now in the runner-up position for Manchester’s synth-pop duo. But one step ahead, and guaranteed her eleventh hit with this month‘s Chartbuster, is a 30-year-old Belgian World Music Award winner. Her other successes have included songs previously recorded by Cock Robin, Desireless, Mylene Farmer and France Gall - and her new single certainly draws quite a lot from a well-known 1998 release - Liquido’s “Narcotic”. That didn’t quite make it through the breakers into my chart - although a dance version by the Potatoheadz and Lizzy Pattinson peaked at number three, five and a half years ago. Next time, with entirely new lyrics, it will return! My Record of the Month for May 2011 is Kate Ryan, with “LoveLife”.

( Just in case anyone has scanned the commentary looking for references to two retro years to be featured here in May - there is, unfortunately but deliberately, only one. I already know that I am going to be busy with work one-third and two-thirds of the way through this coming month - so there will just be a single retro top 100 this time, appearing at around the middle of May! )

Hooray for Who's That Chick, On The Floor, Need You Now, Coming Home, and King of Anything.
Franklin’s music profoundly touched and changed the world, because over and over it offered that bridge to salvation, to freedom.

Great to see Sander Van Doorn so high in another chart.

Martin Solveig, Eric Prydz, David Guetta are great. Quite like your #1 too.

Also I'm happy to see that Dario G topped your chart - can't believe that song is 10 years old now! :o

Maybe that's something that I can do to celebrate the 200th number one, when that happens?

We're just about exactly half-way through May.....

I wrote:Her...new single certainly draws quite a lot from a well-known 1998 release - Liquido’s “Narcotic”.
So, for this month's trip back in time, it's a return to the penultimate year of the 1990's.....in more ways than one, as I have already featured eight annual top 100s from that decade, with just one more (1991) remaining to be covered in the months ahead! Although I was buying more singles in this period - especially the latter half of it - than previously or since, this year actually represented quite a low point in their overall quality. Well over a hundred tracks from 1998 reached the breakers - but just forty-eight made it through into my monthly top forty, a smaller total than every other year to date.

At this time, the UK and German charts were the only ones I was closely in touch with, so naturally most of my favourites were hits in one or both of these countries - and it's quite appropriate that I post this within days of the latest Eurovision Song Contest. Not only are there six songs from the 1998 contest in my top 100 of the year (and one further entry just misses out, landing at number 101) but there are no less than five finalists from the German selection programme (presented by.....Nena!) that. arguably inevitably, all lost out to the Guildo Horn song written by future contestant, and one of 2011's presenters, Stefan Raab. Including these - and a rejected song from the UK final that also reached the breakers (but only briefly, not climbing high enough to enter this top 100), there were more Eurovision-related breakers from 1998 than in any other year.

The best of all those Eurovision songs was my longest-lasting hit of the year - but is that enough to enable it to top this chart? And who else was impressing me in 1998? Which two acts take three of the top five positions between them, separately and together? Who was one of my oldest (then-)living hit makers ever? Which act went to number one with two different sets of lyrics to the same tune? And how many of the top hundred were new versions, in whole or in part, of prior releases? Well, the answer to that last one, if I've counted correctly, is TWENTY! - and three of those are, unfortunately, not available on YouTube. However, the other ninety-seven tracks are all there, at the links below - and filled six hours for me today. Now, here they come.....
