This month, there are nine non-movers in the top forty - including eight of last month’s top ten. Two of the top three switch places with each other, as Goose fall from pole position after two months at number one with “Synrise”, and climbing two spots to become my 186th chart-topper is “The Edge Of Glory”. This means that Lady GaGa has now had a number one in my chart in each of three years in a row - the others being “Poker Face” and “Alejandro”. While this is an impressive feat, it has also previously been achieved by Ace of Base and Jam and Spoon featuring Plavka - and indeed bettered by Tanita Tikaram, whose four number ones occurred in consecutive years! However, on her present form, the possibility of Lady GaGa matching that next year certainly can’t be ruled out. Among just six other climbers this time, Yelle is the Rapid Riser, as “Que Veux-Tu” races up nine places to number 22 - while nineteen other tracks descending include former Chartbuster “Catch Your Fall“ by Clokx. Diving seven places to number 36, that‘s the fastest faller, and just two spots above the longest laster - as Tim Berg can now celebrate a whole year in my top forty with “Bromance”. Under the name Avicii, he also has the highest of four well-spread-out new entries this month. Although there is at least one vocal version (arguably more!) of his latest track, it’s mainly the instrumental “Penguin” that earns him a number 11 debut. The second highest new entry is entirely instrumental - Sander Van Doorn crashes in at number 20 with “Koko”, just one position below his first hit, “Love Is Darkness”. Alexandra Stan also doubles her tally of both current and total hits, as “Get Back (ASAP)” arrives at number 40. The follow-up to “Mr Saxobeat” has made quite a sudden and significant climb to get there, after three months at the bottom end of the breakers. And the only artist making their chart debut is Lolita - also known in some territories as “Lolita Jolie”, presumably to avoid confusion with other Lolitas.....? Her recent French success, “Joli Garcon”, enters at number 30.

After a very small influx of new breakers in August, there are no less than eleven this time - and four of them are by acts who have previously had number ones. Three of these - Paul Kalkbrenner, Caro Emerald and the aforementioned Lady GaGa - have potential future hits all running to over five minutes in length, with “Gutes Nitzwerk”, “The Other Woman”, and “You And I” respectively. The latter two are upcoming single releases, while the other is a track from the latest album by the musician and actor born in Leipzig, Germany in 1977, “Icke Wieder”. Meanwhile, Hooverphonic have the much shorter third single from their latest album, “One Two Three”, which could soon give them their third simultaneous hit; David Guetta might be on the way to a sixth top forty entry with “Titanium”; and Robyn may get her third with “Call Your Girlfriend”. And, with the second most impressive new breaker of the month, Britney Spears could finally be about to follow up her one and only previous success - “Everytime”, from 2004! Three other acts appear in the breakers for the first time, as “Plage”, “Cinema”, and “Hello” (a cover version of the recent number one by Martin Solveig and Dragonette) could become the first hits for the Crystal Fighters, Benny Benassi featuring Gary Go and the Baseballs respectively. And, while we’re on the subject of tracks with one-word titles, the new Chartbuster.....doesn’t fall into this category!. But it does come from a group who have done well with many of these over the past decade. Seven of their previous ten breakers have had a single-word title - and “Lying” was the only one that didn’t reach my top forty. The others that did get there were “Something”, “Alone“, “Pray”, “Surrender”, “Gone” and “Lost” - but they have also been able to succeed with a track with a longer title, “Out Of My Mind”. And now they’ll do it again, with their latest single - which has already charted in their homeland, and may yet travel further. Continuing an already excellent year of successes by Belgian artists, an eighth hit is now guaranteed for Lasgo, with my Record of the Month for September 2011, “Here With Me”.

Yes indeed - the tracks from 41 to 125 that are new or on the way up. So, for example, Alexandra Stan's "Get Back" has been on the breakers at 40, 33 and 30 in the last three months, and now enters the chart at number 40 - this has climbed 125-118-115-40.

^ The perfect example of why Billboard's "Bubbling Under Hot 100" chart should not be interpreted as positions 101, 102, etc on the "main" chart extended past its top 100 "Hot 100" positions.

As is done with alarming consistency by nearly every one who posts on this board!!!!

So the first trip through time this month is another one back to the seventies, and prior to when I started compiling my monthly chart - indeed, before I began taking any interest in music at all. At the start of the year, I was twelve years old and at middle school.....at the end, I was thirteen and at high school. Meanwhile, forty-three records that I would be buying in later years were first released - some initially as album tracks, but all of them on seven-inch singles.....eventually! Most were hits in the UK, many of them early in 1978 (when I first began to listen to the weekly top twenty on Radio One - presented by Tom Browne, then Simon Bates) - although a few took rather longer to become popular. Some didn't reach the UK at all - but were hits in Ireland, the Netherlands or other parts of Europe. Just two are nowhere to be found on YouTube now - leaving forty-one that all fitted, tightly, into two and a half hours today. And, without further ado, but with all the relevant links, here they are:

I wrote:Britney Spears could finally be about to follow up her one and only previous success - “Everytime”, from 2004!
So, the second retro year for this month is the only one remaining from the first decade of this new millennium! I have already posted top 100s for all of its other years.....well, except 2002, one of the first ones ever done, and which was only a top 70. However, that was actually the year of the decade which provided the greatest number of breakers - 117 - so I do plan to revisit that one probably in the not-too-distant future, to reveal what the other forty-seven
were.

In complete contrast.....yes, for me 2004 was the musical low point not just of the "noughties", but of all the years since I began listening to the radio, back in 1978! Although one track fewer from 1998 - forty-eight - had reached my monthly top forty, this year's total was the joint second lowest. More significantly, the total number of new breakers sank to an all-time low of.....seventy. And quite a few of them were cover versions or new interpretations of older releases.

For the annual top hundreds of six other recent years, I have already had to fill a few spots with other singles I bought, that I hadn't regarded even as quite good enough to make the top forty breakers. However, this time.....I checked through my files to identify all the other singles I bought from 2004, and found there were only twenty more! It wasn't as if I was trying to economise, or anything.....2004 just seems to have been a year in which I didn't hear much music that I liked.

This means that the list that follows includes everything from 2004 that I bought - and it's still only a top 90 ! Just seven years on, four of them are already too obscure to be on YouTube - so that left eighty-six for me to play today. Eighty-six tracks.....five hours? Yes, easily - partly as so many very short songs ground to a halt in the breakers that an almost unprecedented nineteen of them comfortably fitted into the second hour (positions 70 to 51, with number 56 unavailable).

I must admit that - as almost never before in all these annual charts - I did find myself thinking "how did that get so high?!" quite a few times. And that even relates to a couple of the (twelve!) tracks that went all the way to number one, several of them for just one month. I was only tuning in to the UK and German charts on radio and television at the time, although I clearly found much more to like in the latter than in the former. But hopefully others will find at least something to enjoy here. Uniquely, my top track of the year was never released as a single.....

Number one nineteen years ago: STARSHIP EDELWEISS Edelweiss
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This month, my 187th number one is the 22nd to enter at the top, as David Guetta and Sia zoom up ninety-two places with “Titanium”. The 35-year-old Australian providing the vocals is making her chart debut - but it’s the sixth top forty entry for the 43-year-old Frenchman, and the fourth to reach my top five. The instrumental “Grrrr” peaked at number five, while his best previous placing was number four, at which both “Baby When The Light” and “When Love Takes Over” stalled. However, there are several strong challengers not far below, including two acts matching their previous bests. Among seven climbers this month, Sander Van Doorn races up seventeen places to number three with “Koko”, while Alexandra Stan’s follow-up to “Mr Saxobeat” is the Rapid Riser. “Get Back (ASAP)” was a new entry at number 40 last time, but is now at number four. Meanwhile, all but one of a bumper intake of eight new entries are in the top half of the top forty. Britney Spears gains only her second hit in my chart, with “I Wanna Go” at number five; Lady GaGa is already following up last month’s number one “The Edge Of Glory” with “You and I” at number nine; while Duck Sauce follow up the recent number two “Barbra Streisand” with “Big Bad Wolf” at ten. Last month’s Chartbuster gives Lasgo their eighth hit - “Here With Me” at 15 - and there’s a third success for Paul Kalkbrenner, two places lower with “Gutes Nitzwerk”. The London-based Crystal Fighters have their first hit with a song that has recently featured in various commercials, and has spent several weeks in the Dutch top forty - “Plage”, at 19. And the lady who had the longest-lasting number one album ever in her homeland brings up the rear with a sixth track from “Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor”. “The Other Woman” is new for Caro Emerald at number 40. The only non-mover this month is Avicii with “Penguin” at number 11, while twenty-four hits moving down include Kate Ryan with “LoveLife”, the fastest faller at 35, and Martin Solveig and Dragonette with “Hello” at 36. The former number one is now making its eleventh appearance.
Steve Murano didn’t make it into my top forty with the original release of “Passion”, which spent eleven months in the breakers - but, eight years on, a new remix now brings it back. And it’s joined by seven brand new potential future hits - two of which are further tracks from the current David Guetta album. “Without You” features Usher and “Night Of My Life” features Jennifer Hudson, both appearing in the breakers for the first time - as are Calvin Harris and Kelis. The singer-songwriter, producer and DJ born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1984 and the New Yorker who recorded her first major worldwide success in 1999 recently reached number two in the UK with “Bounce”. “New York New York” was Moby’s only previous hit in my chart - now, he has his fourth breaker with “Lie Down In Darkness”. Meanwhile, “Wir Sind Am Leben”, which entered the German chart at number three last week, is the fourth breaker for Rosenstolz, and could become their third hit - while Robyn’s fifth breaker, arriving just one spot below her fourth, is “Love Kills”, although this is not the same song as the one with this title that reached number five for both Freddie Mercury and Little Boots. And a track that’s taken some time to work its magic on me is the new Chartbuster, the guaranteed new entry in next month’s top forty. I first heard it back at the end of June - and, even then, it sounded like the unstoppable monster that would eventually conquer the charts of Europe. Soon, it was number one in Denmark.....then the Netherlands.....then Belgium - and it has since spread to the German-speaking countries, and has been close to the top ten in France. It’s now expected to smash into the UK top forty at number one this weekend! My Record of the Month for October 2011 is “Loca People (La Gente Está Muy Loca)" by Spanish DJ and producer Sak Noel.
Are you going to chart Collide at all? I notice it's high in your Pop Chart votes yet you only have Penguin/ Fade Into Darkness here.
A fascinating question that I was hoping to resolve long before now, but haven't been able to.
I suspect, but haven't yet confirmed for certain, that "Collide" uses the same backing track as "Fade Into Darkness" - ie "Penguin" ! If that is indeed the case, then they will all have to share a single position in my chart.
For this reason, I haven't allowed "Collide" to appear as a separate breaker, or given the other tracks additional credit for it here this month - but, as it gave me an extra track I could vote for from the Pop Chart list, I've treated all three as one there for a few weeks now.
Maddeningly, several of the suppliers of records and CDs that I use regularly have been listing a physical release of "Collide" as coming soon for quite some time - but the dates keep slipping back. I'm slightly optimistic that it might finally be on the way in the next fortnight or so - but maybe I shouldn't be......
I wrote:The singer-songwriter, producer and DJ born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1984.....
So, that reference to Calvin Harris leads to this month's first retro chart - and it's the last of the first full decade in which I was actively listening to music, and to an increasing number of European chart shows! In 1984, I was studying hard at university, but keeping in touch with the Europarade - extended this year to a top forty - and four of its component charts, of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Austria. In these weekly chart shows, I discovered the vast majority of my 1984 favourites - or possibly in the Eurovision Song Contest, in which there were an almost unprecedented amount of strong entries.
In the mid-1980s, my own monthly chart was a top fifty, the intention being that everything I liked and bought would be included. As previously mentioned, this resulted in a much higher number of "hits" in this decade than in more recent ones - a total of exactly nine hundred. Eight hundred and two of those have already appeared in the other nine annual 1980s charts I have posted - and one of the other ninety-eight is "Aurora" by Nova - which didn't actually reach my chart until last year. At some point soon, I will edit that into its rightful place in 1981! That leaves ninety-seven to reveal now - plus, to complete a top hundred of 1984, the three best other singles I also bought from that year.
I suspect that quite a few tracks here aren't very widely known at all - but, as usual, the YouTube links are here so that they can be checked out. Except for six that, twenty-seven years on, are just too obscure for anybody to have uploaded! I must admit, I'm surprised that more didn't fall into this category - there were some that I was quite amazed to find there today. However, this left plenty of time in the last of the usual six hours for an extended version of the song which is the highest on my all-time list for a UK soloist.....the full six-minute version of the highest-ranking American in that all-time countdown.....and all fourteen and three-quarter minutes of what is, I can now reveal here for the first time ever, my number one of all-time!
