I wrote:David Guetta becomes only the second act to enter the top forty at number one twice - a feat only previously achieved by Circ, with their 2002 recording “Destroy She Said” and the follow-up “Close Your Eyes”. “Destroy She Said” had been the first new entry ever to immediately displace another number one that had entered at the top...
So now it's time to more fully revisit a year for which, quite some time ago, I posted just the top end of the annual countdown. This month's second retro package is a seven-hour YouTube journey through all 117 breakers from 2002, sixty-six of which went on to reach my monthly top forty. Seven of them made it all the way to number one - but head and shoulders above all the others are the two that entered at the top in successive months! This was another year in which the only charts I was able to follow every week were those of Germany and the UK - but I heard considerably more that I liked in the former than in the latter. However, although I bought more CDs and records in 2002 than in almost any other year of the decade, it might not have been the best period for original music - there are, incredibly, over forty tracks here that were cover versions or new interpretations of older releases, many of which had previously entered my charts! Some of the titles may have changed, but the melodies are the same..... Here, then, is the full list of my favourites from nine years ago:

For the second month in a row, David Guetta has fallen to number three immediately after having a new entry at number one. “Without You” follows “Titanium” downwards, and my new chart-topper is the first for Avicii, with a little help from Leona Lewis. Tim Bergling, born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989, failed to improve on his number two debut last October with “Bromance”, but now climbs one place to the summit with “Collide / Fade Into Darkness / Penguin”. That winning combination is my 189th number one, by the narrowest of margins over this month’s highest new entry. November’s Chartbuster from Lana Del Rey, “Video Games”, crashes in at number two - and must be a strong contender for the first number one of 2012. She’s from New York, USA - but the other four new entries this time are by acts from different parts of Europe. From Sweden, Lykke Li has her first success with “I Follow Rivers” (primarily due to its “Magician Remix”) at 15 - and, from Scotland, Amy MacDonald gets her fifth with “Love Love”, which finally arrives at number 40 after ten months as a breaker. Denmark’s Agnes Obel and Belgium’s Basto now both have two hits in adjacent positions - “Just So” enters at 29, below “Riverside”, while “Again And Again” comes in at 34, just above the former Chartbuster and ex-number one “Gregory’s Theme”. Twenty-one tracks moving down this month also include former Chartbuster “In Love For A While” by Anna Rossinelli - the fastest faller, taking a ten-place dive to 38 - and Martin Solveig’s ex-number one “Hello”, at 39 and still the longest laster. But he also has one of ten climbers, as “Ready 2 Go” creeps back up one place to number 21. Lolita rebounds too after falling eight places in November, bouncing right back to her number 22 peak with “Joli Garcon” - while this month’s Rapid Riser is Robyn, up fourteen places to number 26 with “Call Your Girlfriend”. That leaves just four non-movers this time - Britney Spears at 4, Christina Perri at 11, Sebastian Cruz and Miryel at 23 and Gianna Nannini at 24.

While many potential hits that originally appeared in the top 40 breakers in the first half of this year slowly edge ever nearer to the chart, there are much faster upward moves for more recent releases by Coldplay and Jennifer Lopez - and there’s room for nine brand new contenders. Two are by artists who have previously had at least one number one hit in my chart - Lady GaGa and Little Boots return with “Marry The Night” and “Shake” respectively - and Lana Del Rey could rapidly follow up “Video Games” with the other side of the same single, “Blue Jeans”. But the only other new breaker this time by an act that has previously impressed me is “Blood, Tears and Gold”. Three other tracks from the same album by Hurts couldn’t quite reach the top forty - “Stay”, “Wonderful Life” and “Sunday” peaked at 72, 77 and 83 - but could this be the one to go further? Meanwhile, after much worldwide success with a series of releases that I didn’t like at all, Katy Perry finally has a more tuneful effort with “The One That Got Away”. Both Joe Goddard and Valentina are from London, but their recent release “Gabriel” has performed considerably better in Belgium than in the UK - and the other three new potential hits have also been charting there this month. “The World Is Gonna End Tonight” is the current single from School Is Cool, a young “Baroque pop” band - while Wouter De Backer, better known as Gotye, has spent an incredible twelve weeks at number one with “Somebody That I Used To Know”, ably assisted by New Zealand vocalist Kimbra. However, a more unusual lasting legacy may eventually be left by someone who, through almost no fault of her own, had an award named after her! The perfomer of this month’s Chartbuster was born in 1974, and sung for her country in the Eurovision Song Contest while still a teenager. She finished.....last. Many others have done that, of course, often to then disappear without trace - but something that was never forgotten was the outfit she wore. In its honour, the “Barbara Dex Award” is given annually to the worst-dressed participant in the contest - the most well-known winners including Guildo Horn and TaTu. Meanwhile, she has since doubled in age, but has continued making music. And her latest hit in her homeland is now a guaranteed new entry in my first chart of 2012. My Record of the Month for December 2011 is Barbara Dex, with “Before”.

Is the ESC "Fashion" award the only thing Barbara Dex lent her name to? (Cf the recently-nationalised Franco-Belgian bank Dexia. "Dex" could be a by-word for failure in Belgium!!!)

Shame Lana Del Rey didn't pinch that record - a far more deserving number on that Mr Bergling and Ms Lewis. There's quite a yawning chasm between the positions of "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans" on your chart, though!!!!

Somewhat astounded by how well you took to "Gutes Nitzwerk"!!!

I finally got around to checking the "Chasing Dreams" track, to check if it was a cover of the Sunscreem original - but it's not.

The two Lana Del Rey tracks certainly couldn't be much further apart than they are at the moment - at 2 and 117 respectively! - but, as the month progresses, I already suspect that they will be a lot closer together next time. And, although new entries at number two have failed to progress further much more often than not, it seems very possible that "Video Games" will climb to the top. I was surprised, but delighted, to discover that it has now reached number one in Germany!

Until now I didn't know that she recorded an English version of "J'en ai marre" :o
Amazingly, this evening I've just made a similar discovery, while beginning to collect the YouTube links for one of this month's Retro features, about a fairly well-known (?) track from the first half of the 1970s ! :o

I never knew until today that a certain Greek singer of a song not without references to somewhere in Poland had also recorded an English version, replacing the original name in it with "Harry" ! :D

2 bits of good news, indeed! I assume this also means that the EP is available on CD in Germany. Fantastic, although I'd just sent out my final CD single order of the year (I buckled and pre-ordered Gotye as I realised that I was unlikely to be able to get to the shops during regular opening hours on my next trip over the border, for New Years)

Lana's next single Born To Die is better, IMO. Why so late with Lykke Li (great). Is it charting in Europe?

Yes indeed - and that was an important factor in its reaching the top! "Video Games" is only the fourth most downloaded single of the week there.

I thought I was quite up to date with that one! Yes, it's been number one in Belgium for the last three weeks - but now falls to number two there, as "Zanna" crashes straight in at the top for Selah Sue.... There's also a good chance that "I Follow Rivers" could enter the Dutch top forty in the next week or two.

Lykke Li's "I Follow Rivers" (The Magician Remix) was recently a number 1 hit in Belgium.

The original was released earlier this year and had much radio airplay. But not a huge hit in the charts.

Nice chart!!!

As my current chart still contains fairly equal numbers of releases from 2010 and 2011, I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to produce annual top hundreds for those years for quite some time yet. However, here now is the top hundred of another retro year:

I wrote:Tim Bergling, born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989, failed to improve on his number two debut last October....
So now it's time to revisit more fully one of the first years for which I previously posted a shorter annual chart, a couple of years ago. Although the vast majority of the records I bought from 1989 were hits in the UK, Ireland and/or the Netherlands, the countries whose charts I was still able to follow fairly fully despite working very long hours, there are quite a few more obscure inclusions. Several of these were unavailable on YouTube when I originally featured 1989 - but some of them have appeared now, albeit not always in very good quality. On the other hand, a couple that had been there have since been withdrawn! Overall, seven are now missing - including, unfortunately, four of the top ten - so to fill the usual six hours today a few longer versions replaced the radio edits, including a ten-minute version of one of the many megamix medleys. Here, then, are my favourites from twenty-two years ago - and the number one is a single that didn't enter my monthly chart (at the top!) until June 1992, when, for certain notable reasons, it was a frequent feature on "Lifestyle Satellite Jukebox".....

I wrote:The perfomer of this month’s Chartbuster was born in 1974
So the second retro chart for December is a final trip back to the period before I ever started buying records and preparing my own monthly charts. Previously this year, I managed to produce annual countdowns of reasonable length for the latter part of the 1970s, and a chart that combined all releases I eventually bought that originated from 1969 and earlier - now it's time to fill the gap by addressing not just 1974, but also the other four preceding years.

In this period, I was at school (actually four different schools, partly as it was during this time that my family moved from my original birthplace to my present location) and, as far as I can recall, not really interested in music very much at all! But I did enjoy watching television, when I was allowed - which perhaps explains why (as in the surrounding periods) there are quite a few theme tunes here.

Less surprisingly, there are several Eurovision Song Contest entries, that I generally discovered much later on - but also quite a few more well-known (and less well-known!) British / European hits. Some of these I certainly would have become aware of only when either they were re-released (not necessarily in the UK) or when other acts covered them, rather more recently than.....27 to 31 years ago!

All in all, it's maybe quite a strange mixture of seventy-five tracks, which (tightly) fitted into four hours today, thanks to the below YouTube links - a few of which are not quite the versions I have listed, but they are usually fairly reasonable approximations. A notable exception is probably the track at exactly the half-way mark, a 1971 number one hit from Ireland, of which the only YouTube versions available are from.....1908 !

And, on the subject of "number one" and "Ireland", my top choice from these five years is actually an album track, not a single - but at least it's by an Irish group who most readers will have heard of. Here, then, are my top 75 of the early 1970s.....

Interesting to see Abba's "I've Been Waiting For You", as far as I know it was only released as a single in Australia and New Zealand (though it was the B-side to "So Long" in Europe) :o
