There are four non-movers this month, including the whole of the top three. A high climber last time, Duffy sticks at number three with "Warwick Avenue"; last month's highest new entry, "Paddy's Revenge" by Steve Mac, fails to improve on its number two debut; and it's a third month at the top for Coldplay's "Viva La Vida". However, most of this month's six new entries could well be challengers next time, as five of them are in the top twenty. The highest is a third top ten hit for Armin Van Buuren - "In And Out of Love" follows "Serenity" and "Sail", and makes one of the biggest moves ever in the extended chart, up 112 places to enter the top forty at number nine. Four places lower, it's the third appearance in my chart of the instrumental "Children", which previously reached the top ten for Robert Miles in 1996 and 4 Clubbers in 2002 - now it has been reinterpreted by Dave Darell. Just above that at number 12, a high entry for last month's Chartbuster, Maria Mena's's "All This Time (The Pick-Me-Up Song) - while, much further down the chart, a low entry for Ian Carey, whose "Red Light" is at number 40. These three artists are all making their chart debut this month.

"Race" may have ended a long run of consecutive top ten hits in Belgium for Milk Inc, but it enters my chart at number 10 - one place above their other current hit "Forever". And, although it has completely failed to match the success of its predecessor, the new single by Sara Bareilles also arrives one place higher in my chart. "Bottle It Up" is new at 20, while "Love Song" is one of twelve climbers, up another four places to number 21 in its third month. Also rebounding four places, from 32 to 28, is this month's longest laster - "Larger Than Life", which has now made eleven appearances for Regi, Wout and Caren Meynen, despite never being officially released as a single. Originally from the album "Registrated", it can now also be seen and heard on the new CD/DVD set "Regi Live In Antwerp". Meanwhile, three hits share the title of "Rapid Riser" this month by climbing five places each - Madonna at 15 with "Give It 2 Me", Ishtar at 16 with "O Julissi Na Jalini", and Amy MacDonald at 30 with "Mr Rock and Roll". And eighteen records move down, the fastest faller being Kylie Minogue with "In My Arms", diving from 18 to 38.

A former hit by the Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl and a former breaker by the Bellamy Brothers return to the top 40 breakers, having also recently returned to the UK Top 40 - and there are nine brand new potential future hits. Rhianna previously reached number 22 with "Unfaithful", and T.I. previously reached number 101 with "Why You Wanna" - both primarily on the strength of their instrumental versions. Now they are together on new breaker "Live Your Life", also in primarily due to its instrumental version. Yves Larock and Dave Darell may be on course to follow up their current hits, the Freeloaders and Alex C featuring Y-ass are also in with a good chance of following up their very recent successes, and first-time chart appearances could be on the way for Mgmt and Rene Ablaze presents Fallen Skies. Although "Miles Away" has unfortunately wrecked Madonna's run of consecutive UK top 20 hits, it is my second highest new breaker this month. And the brand new Chartbuster, guaranteed to be in next month's top forty, is the Danish dance act consisting of Lina Rafn and Paw Lagermann. They previously reached number five in my chart with "From Paris To Berlin" and number 33 with "Self Control". The third hit for Infernal will be December 2008's Record of the Month - "Whenever You Need Me".

I'm delighted to see Viva la Vida hasn't succumbed to the onslaught of Paddy's Revenge!

I'm at a loss to understand why Ishtar are still rising on your chart though!

Perhaps you can tell me - why are the Bellamy Brothers back in the UK charts?

I can - it has been used (well, sixty seconds of it) in a distinctive commercial for Barclaycard:

In hindsight, I felt that perhaps it had fallen a little further than it should have done last month - so it is possibly just briefly regaining a bit of lost ground!

I wrote: Armin Van Buuren - "In And Out of Love"....makes one of the biggest moves ever in the extended chart, up 112 places to enter the top forty at number nine.
So, this month's extra feature is a three-part countdown of the thirty singles that have somehow managed to climb at least a hundred places up my extended chart into my top forty!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
30 - LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME Sylver [Up 100 places to number 22]
Image
Chart run: 122 22 03 02 05 06 13 24 30 32 34 35 36 37 38 43 47 55 57 63 69 76 86 93 100
The Belgian duo's take on one of Abba's songs was one of their biggest hits on my chart, matching the peak of their earlier release and one-and-only UK hit, "Turn The Tide".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

29 - KOMODO Mauro Picotto [Up 100 places to number 19]

Image

Chart run: 119 19 10 05 07 07 17 22 27 34 38 48 52 55 67 71 77 79 82 87

A mostly instrumental track which charted remarkably high in the UK despite not being stocked by the now-almost-defunct Woolworths. But not quite as high as it reached on my chart! The follow-up, "Proximus", was also in my top forty for six of the ten months "Komodo" spent there.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
28 - TAMBOURIN Berdien Stenberg [Up 100 places to number 6]
Image
Chart run: 106 06 03 02 02 08 16 27 29 43 47 61 71 72 79 87
The Dutch flautist reached my top five with several tracks from her 1983 album - including this one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

27 - C'EST LES VACANCES Ilona Mitrecey [Up 100 places to number 5]

Image

Chart run: 105 05 04 09 14 26 33 43 47 50 53 59 63 70 76 79 81 88

The young French singer's second single crashed into my top ten with almost as big a climb as its predecessor - but didn't stay there for anywhere near as long.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
26 - BEAM ME UP - THE FIVE YEAR MISSION Edelweiss [Up 101 places to number 12]
Image
Chart run: 113 12 07 19 31 89 124
This Austrian act had topped my chart with "Starship Edelweiss", but their next voyage around a similar theme seemed to crash-land after a promising take-off.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

25 - TONIGHT THE STREETS ARE OURS Richard Hawley [Up 102 places to number 18]

Image

Chart run: 120 18 12 19 26 29 37 45 46 49 57 60 63 67 74 84

The only track in this list which, after such a major climb, didn't ultimately reach my top ten - and which wasn't even played by the chart show presenters JK and Joel when it was a new entry in the UK at number 40!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
24 - I WANNA LOVE YOU FOREVER Jessica Simpson [Up 102 places to number 18]
Image
Chart run: 120 18 05 05 12 25 46 49 56 76 83 95
Two further breakers failed to light up my chart in the way this first release did for the American singer and actress. While the original ballad hit version was responsible for its appearance in the breakers, its chart success was mainly due to a dance remix.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

23 - CARTOON HEROES Aqua [Up 103 places to number 16]

Image

Chart run: 119 16 07 07 07 11 16 27 41 43 51 73 80 91

One of eight singles that peaked at number seven in my chart for the Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group who, in a rarely-equalled feat, took all of their first three UK releases to number one. This later one was from their second album "Aquarius".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
22 - KISS (WHEN THE SUN DON'T SHINE) Vengaboys [Up 103 places to number 15]
Image
Chart run: 118 15 05 05 04 05 19 41 48 50 56 58 59 65 67 70 86
These Dutch-based Eurodancers had several major hits in the UK and in my chart - this one making the biggest climb, and spending four months in my top ten.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

21 - UN MONDE PARFAIT Ilona Mitrecey [Up 103 places to number 2]

Image

105 02 02 02 01 01 01 08 19 27 34 37 39 40 42 46 50 51 55 63 64 66 73 74 79 82 88

And completing the first section of this countdown, the second appearance of the French singer, with the song that spread the furthest around Europe for her, and topped my chart for three months.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Continuing a brief review of the highest climbers ever in almost thirty years of my monthly chart.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

20 - THE SONGS THAT WE SING Charlotte Gainsbourg [Up 104 places to number 19]

Image

Chart run: 123 19 10 07 05 05 05 05 09 19 33 41 53 63 74 84 98

This offering from someone more well-known for her film work spent over six months in the French singles chart, peaking at number 30 - but fell short of the top 100 when released in the UK. With me, however, it went on to spend four months at number 5.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
19 - YOU ARE ALIVE Fragma [Up 105 places to number 13]
Image
Chart run: 118 13 03 03 08 14 29 30 42 51 60 66 69 83
One of three songs that the German dance project took to my top ten - the others being "Everytime You Need Me" and "Time And Time Again" - this was also one of their highest-charting hits in the UK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

18 - DISCO VOLANTE Ida Engberg [Up 105 places to number 8]

Image

Chart run: 113 08 03 02 02 01 04 06 17 25 ....

The Swedish DJ recently raced into my top ten, and eventually made it to number one with a wholly instrumental track that spent a long time in the charts in the Netherlands, but didn't really find many buyers anywhere else!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
17 - SILENCE Gigi D'Agostino [Up 105 places to number 6]
Image
111 06 01 01 01 01 07 12 16 17 18 26 34 37 39 43 46 50 55 62 63 67 71 75 77 83 88 91
The first of three number ones on my chart for this Italian DJ, remixer and music producer, and the longest-lasting - but surprisingly this track was not among his greatest successes across the continent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

16 - MI SPENDO TUTTO Raffaella Carra [Up 106 places to number 10]

Image

Chart run: 116 10 09 33 41 51 61 67 79

Performed in a few imported programmes broadcast in the very earliest days of the UK's Channel Four in 1982, and featured in a rolling preview in the months leading up to its opening, it was a long time until I tracked this down on 7" single and CD album. Not knowing the title was my major problem! Eventually, I found it - but after making a rapid climb up my chart, it disappeared fairly quickly too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
15 - WE'RE ONLY HUMAN Star [Up 106 places to number 9]
Chart run: 115 09 04 02 02 05 05 12 23 29 30 41 45 60 70 71 76 86 93
A one-hit wonder on my chart - and, it would seem, in the countries of continental Europe in which it also charted in 1997. And not one that it's possible to find out much about by googling, due to the artist name and the words of the song title! After crashing into my top ten, a dance cover version of the Lightning Seeds' song "Pure" by Scanners prevented it from reaching number one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

14 - LUCKY Lucky Twice [Up 107 places to number 11]

Image

Chart run: 118 11 01 01 09 18 28 32 37 43 48 50 52 56 61 74

Swedish teenagers Hannah Reynold and Emelie Schytz rose quickly to number one in my chart, after reaching the top ten in Spain, Denmark and France - but a proposed release of their single in the UK was unfortunately cancelled.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
13 - WONDERFUL LIFE Tina Cousins [Up 107 places to number 10]
Image
The Essex-born singer had three number ones in my chart - but although her version of a song originally recorded by Black initially looked like becoming the fourth, it didn't quite make it. Most of its success occurred in Australia - and I should point out that the stand-in lip-synching on this video doesn't really do her justice at all......
Chart run: 117 10 03 02 03 05 08 21 32 36 42 47 49 53 56 60 67 74 76 81 86 93
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

12 - WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? Baha Men [Up 107 places to number 9]

Image

Chart run: 116 09 01 03 06 06 12 20 22 26 27 38 38 39 47 50 52 54 58 62 69 71 91 93

A single which made a big climb up the UK top twenty at a time when virtually nothing else ever did, and ultimately became one of our biggest hits of 2000. A dance version also featured on the CD and 12" single was mainly responsible for it reaching number one on my chart, just a month after crashing into the top ten at number nine.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
11 - MOI LOLITA Alizee [Up 108 places to number 16]
Image
124 16 05 01 01 01 04 07 09 19 32 41 42 43 45 49 52 57 63 70 77 80 87 90 92 95 97 103 107 109
The first success for the young Corsican singer, this reached the top ten in most European countries - even the UK! - although Italy was the only one in which it went all the way to number one. Making a massive climb to enter my top forty at number 16, it went on to spent three months at the top.
While the main chart is a top 40, I compile a top 125 every month - so that there are enough tracks between 41 and 125 to produce the top 40 breakers, excluding those dropping out of previous top 40s or moving down.
Now, the final trip back in time this month, and the ten biggest climbers ever.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

10 - THE SUMMER OF ENERGY Gigi D'Agostino [Up 108 places to number 7]

Image

115 07 02 01 01 01 06 16 19 28 29 34 37 41 44 48 49 51 55 57 60 66 67 72 75 77 82 84 92

This artist makes a second appearance in this countdown, with his third number one on my chart. There were four or five different versions on the 12" and CD single, and I think the Youtube link is to the one that I most liked.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
09 - STARS ARE BLIND Paris Hilton [Up 109 places to number 1]
Image
Chart run: 110 01 01 03 06 08 12 16 19 32 33 34 34 39 46 52 59 65 66 71 72 76 82 84 89
By chance I saw the video of this song one evening on Channel Four - probably being premiered - without knowing who the performer was! It has been suggested, however, that she had previously made a much more memorable one....... But it's the musical merit of "Stars Are Blind" that gave it the biggest ever climb to the top of my chart - and it was a top ten hit in several countries, including the UK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

08 - HUNG UP Madonna [Up 110 places to number 11]

Image

Chart run: 121 11 06 06 06 06 13 29 37 42 43 53 57 61 63 76 78 85 88

One of several worldwide chart-toppers for the 50-year-old Michigan-born entertainer, the ingenious sampling of an old Abba track on this 2005 release helped to propel it rapidly into the top end of my chart. Very few of her other hits went higher!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
07 - UNDER THE WEATHER KT Tunstall [Up 111 places to number 12]
Chart run: 123 12 01 01 01 04 05 19 24 28 31 42 45 47 53 62 73 76 78 83 88 94
This was the first of two less well-known tracks from this Scottish singer/songwriter's first studio album, "Eye To The Telescope", that went to number one on my chart. When released as a single in the UK, it only got to number 39!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

06 - ELLA ELLE L'A Kate Ryan [Up 112 places to number 9]

Image

Chart run: 121 09 01 02 02 02 07 08 ....

Nine of this Belgian singer's ten breakers reached my top ten - but this one did so most impressively earlier this year. And, having become her first number one back in July, it has remained in the top ten ever since!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
05 - ON THE RADIO Groove Coverage [Up 112 places to number 9]
Image
Chart run: 121 09 03 02 02 01 07 07 17 30 38 45 49 57 62 64 66 67 74 80 91
The German Euro-trance band have had nine breakers, but only five of those became hits. And this was their best, which raced from the bottom end of the breakers straight into my top ten, but then took another four months to climb to number one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

04 - IN AND OUT OF LOVE Armin van Buuren [Up 112 places to number 9]

Image

Chart run: 121 09 ....

The most recent climber of 112 places, could this also be on the way to the top of my chart sooner or later in 2009? Watch this space!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
03 - NARCOTIC Potatoheadz featuring Lizzy Pattinson [Up 112 places to number 8]
Image
Chart run: 120 08 05 03 03 07 07 13 27 37 46 50 54 55 59 63 76 81 83 88 90
This English singer /songwriter has spent the last ten months in my chart with a song that I have only just discovered was originally recorded, with a slightly different title, by a much more well-known American artist! And her first major success in my chart was also a cover version, of a track by Liquido which hadn't quite made it into my top 40, stalling at number 55.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

02 - OFFSHORE Chicane [Up 113 places to number 9]

Image

Chart run: 122 09 01 02 02 09 25 05 05 27 43 46 66 67 85 87 88 95 96

Having made an unprecedentedly big move into my top 40, this track was purely instrumental when it reached number one in my chart. However, some months later, vocals were added, causing it to briefly rebound right back into the top ten.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
01 - SALTWATER Chicane featuring Maire Brennan [Up 114 places to number 6]
Image
Chart runs: 120 06 02 02 02 02 06 11 15 22 28 41 57 60 64 66 69 70 81 83 94 97 / 124 116
And the highest climb ever from the breakers into the chart also went to Chicane! I had probably only heard their reworking of the "Harry's Game" theme a couple of times at the end of May 1999 - a month later, it raced into my top ten, then was stuck behind Ann Lee's "Two Times" for four months, nonetheless becoming my second-favourite track of that year.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~ Merry Christmas to everyone at UKMix! ~~~~~~
Eight non-movers this time include "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay, at number one for a fourth month - and now featuring virtually the only vocals in the top five. Non-movers by Steve Mac and Eric Prydz are joined by Dave Darell, up eight places to number five, one of fourteen climbers in the chart, and now the highest-ranking version of "Children" - previously, Robert Miles peaked at number six, and 4 Clubbers at number seven. Completing the top five, Tocadisco are up two more places to number three with "Morumbi", and are now one of six acts with two hits each in the current top forty. Milk Inc. are still in the top fifteen with both "Forever" and "Race"; Sara Bareilles is up to number 13 with "Bottle It Up", but takes a dive with "Love Song"; and Duffy doubles her tally of hits, with "Warwick Avenue" remaining in the top ten as "Stepping Stone" arrives at number 25. While Madonna gains a 22nd top forty hit with "Miles Away" at 21, and an eleventh top ten hit as "Give It 2 Me" continues to climb, up another five places to number 10 - and both of Amy MacDonald's hits are accelerating up the chart. "This Is The Life" moves up seven places to number 30, while "Mr Rock And Roll" is the joint Rapid Riser for the second month running, racing up another eighteen places to number 12. The other joint Rapid Riser is Ian Carey, surging from 40 to 22 with "Red Light".
The highest of six new entries is a third top forty hit for Infernal - the Danish dance duo are in at number 20 with last month's Chartbuster, "Whenever You Need Me". Further down, two Frenchmen are new side by side - Toulouse-born tribal-house producer Laurent Wolf arrives at number 37 with "Wash My World", one place above Paris-born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sebastien Tellier. "Divine" was last year's French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, but makes a very belated arrival in my chart following its more recent use in a Renault television commercial. And completing another international line-up of newcomers, with "The Storm" at number 40, are German producer Jerry Ropero and vocalist/songwriter Cozi Costi. The last of these may well be as unknown as the others to most people in the UK - but millions have unwittingly heard some of her very earliest work, because as a schoolgirl chorister she was one of the performers of the theme tune to "Blackadder's Christmas Carol"! Meanwhile, the longest laster on the top forty is still "Larger Than Life" by Regi, Wout and Caren Meynen, staying at number 28 in its twelfth month - and the fastest faller is Lizzy Pattinson with "Just Breathe", sinking fourteen places to number 36 and one of fourteen hits moving down this month.
Strangely enough, I have only recently discovered that "Just Breathe" was originally (just!) called "Breathe", and was briefly a UK hit twice - in 2000 and 2001 - for Faith Hill. Almost a decade later, her version of the song is now among nine brand new breakers this month. Tipped to be a major success in the UK in the next few weeks, Timmy Vegas featuring Bad Lay-Dee have a potential future hit on my chart too with "Another Dimension" - which samples, among others, "Gypsy Woman". Adele came and went too quickly from the UK chart to make an impression on me with "Make You Feel My Love", but now it has made a more leisurely climb to the top end of the Dutch chart, and becomes her second breaker. Fragma could be set for a fifth top forty hit with "Memory", and Ian Oliver might be in line for a second hit with the "Lambada"-inspired "Skankin'". Two further instrumentals are a bit nearer to the chart, for newcomers John Dahlback with "Pyramid" and Butch with "Amelie" - and the Killers look very likely to register a first hit on my top forty with "Human", narrowly missing out on being the Chartbuster. That honour goes, for the second time in the space of less than a year, to Silvy De Bie and Wout Van Dessel. Some of their fifteen previous breakers have taken a long time to get there, others have been much quicker - but they have all made it through into my chart. And their latest single is now guaranteed to enter next time, to give them their sixteenth hit. My Record of the Month for January 2009 is Sylver, with "Rise Again".
Number one eight years ago: C'EST LA VIE (ALWAYS 21) Ace Of Base
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nineteen hits move down my chart this month, including the whole of January's top three. Having risen slowly to number 3, Tocadisco's "Morumbi" dives ten places to number 13; after three months in the runner-up slot, Steve Mac's "Paddy's Revenge" also falls ten places to number 12; and following four months in pole position, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is the fastest faller, as it takes one of the biggest tumbles from the top in nearly thirty years of my monthly chart, landing at number 16. Heading an all-new top three, the 169th chart-topper is one of sixteen climbers in the new chart - Dave Darell, with a new version of "Children", the instrumental which previously reached number 6 for Robert Miles and number 7 for 4 Clubbers. Matching his previous peak with "Serenity", Armin van Buuren climbs another four places to number 2 with "In And Out Of Love", and it's a fifth top five success for Milk Inc. as "Race" moves up five places to number 3. One of just two non-movers in the top forty, Eric Prydz remains at number 4 with "Pjanoo", and completing the top five is a former Chartbuster, racing up another nine places - Miley Cyrus with "See You Again".

Vinyl formats have been meant to be dying a death for quite some time now, but this month there are no less than four seven-inch singles in the top ten. Amy McDonald moves up another six places to number 6 with "Mr Rock and Roll", still riding high in some territories long after its UK success, closely followed by Madonna's "Give It 2 Me" - now at number 7, and climbing for a fifth month in a row. Duffy falls back just one place to number 8 with "Warwick Avenue", and the Killers arrive at number 9 with "Human", the highest of just three new entries. The second highest new entry is also a chart debut, for German techno DJ Bülent Gürler, otherwise known as Butch - whose instrumental "Amelie" races up 103 places to number 10. Which means that January 2009's Chartbuster, "Rise Again" by Sylver, is actually the lowest of February's newcomers - but it still makes a strong entry at number 17. Half of that duo, Wout van Dessel, is also one third of the longest laster on my chart, as "Larger Than Life", co-performed by Regi and sung by Caren Meynen, moves back up one place to nunber 27, just ahead of this month's Rapid Riser - "The Storm" by Jerry Ropero and Cozi, up twelve places to number 28 after finally charting at number 40, following a very slow rise through the breakers, last month.

While John Dahlback, Adele, Ian Oliver, TI featuring Rihanna and Timmy Vegas featuring Bad Lay-Dee all make major moves up the top 40 breakers, and Coolio returns with "Gangsta's Paradise", a former breaker from 1995 which recently reappeared in the UK Top 40 while he was a "Celebrity Big Brother" housemate, there are just five new potential future hits this month - and all are by acts impressing me for the first time. The Outsiders are charting in the Netherlands - but, it would seem, not in the UK! - with "Keep This Fire Burning", and the same will probably be true for Marco V. It's possible that his new release was meant to be called "Coma Aid B" - as the letters could then be rearranged into the title of the Kim Wilde hit on which it is based - "Cambodia"! Lily Allen's second UK chart-topper "The Fear" could become her first hit in my chart, and the artist who preceded her at number one in the UK, Lady GaGa, has the second highest new breaker - but not with "Just Dance". Having heard this track for several months now, I have yet to understand its mass appeal - whereas the follow-up, "Poker Face", which is already charting in the UK, and is in the top five in Ireland on downloads only, has made a much more immediate and favourable impact on me.

However, this month's Chartbuster comes from a 21-year-old singer and actress born in Estonia. Her first single, from her album "Love Is Dead", topped the charts in her home country last year - but has more recently begun to make an impact in other territories.......and is somewhat difficult to describe. But a comment elsewhere on UKMix, "A mixture of pop and rock, with some touch of weirdness and creepiness!" is probably as accurate as any. Guaranteed a place in next month's top forty, my Record of the Month for February 2009 is Kerli, with "Walking On Air".

I wrote:.....following four months in pole position, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is the fastest faller, as it takes one of the biggest tumbles from the top in nearly thirty years of my monthly chart, landing at number 16.
Checking back over the years, there have been more instances of major dives by singles that have topped my chart than I remembered.......this is actually the fifteenth time that the number one has fallen straight out of the top ten!

So, for this month's extra feature, I'll present a quick summary over three days (not necessarily consecutive!) of those fifteen number ones. Today:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The five number ones that fell ten places to number eleven:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

HIJO DE LA LUNA - Mecano [November 1990]

Image

Chart run: 22 01 01 01 01 11 14 20 38

This Spanish group had many hits in their home country - but I discovered this one when it charted in the Netherlands, reaching the top three. Later taken to similar heights in new lands in a cover version by Loona, the original release by Mecano spent four months as my number one before taking a dive.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
YOU AND YOUR SISTER - This Mortal Coil [February 1992]
Image
Chart run: 05 01 05 04 01 01 11 22 40 49 XX 39 45
One of three songs with "sister" in their title that topped my chart, this was also a top twenty hit in the Netherlands, for the "dream-pop" [? - so Wikipedia describes it!!] UK-based act. But it wasn't among their UK-released singles, including the very minor chart hit "Song To The Siren". Their three months at number one were interrupted by Nicole (more of whom later?).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

O FORTUNA - Fortuna featuring Satenig [April 1992]

Image

Chart run: 26 01 01 11 14 17 20

Replacing "You And Your Sister" at the top, then repeating its ten-places tumble, was yet another single that was proving popular in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, when it had reached number two, this new interpretation of Carl Orff's well-known classical piece "Carmina Burana" was declared illegal in that country, and remaining unsold copies were confiscated and destroyed!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AROUND THE WORLD (LA LA LA LA LA) - A Touch Of Class [April 2001]
Image
Chart run: 08 02 06 01 11 14 10 16 28 35 39 40 40
Finally a hit from my chart that enjoyed (brief) success in the UK - albeit, as tended to happen, some time after it had reached number one in the German-speaking countries and notched up several top ten placings elsewhere. Included in its unusually yoyo-like run in my chart was a topple of ten places from the summit - although it was the same act's follow-up single, the UK-unreleased "My Heart Beats Like A Drum", that replaced it as my number one!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

HEAVEN - DJ Sammy and Yanou featuring Do [October 2002]

Image

Chart run: 24 04 03 05 03 01 11 17 30

As previously mentioned, this superior cover version of an old Bryan Adams track was in the top five of my chart while it experienced continental success in mid-2002, and had already begun a rapid descent by the time it entered the UK chart at number one. Although it never returned to my chart, it is clearly still finding new fans even now, over six years on -,it is frequently in the UK top 200, and sometimes it's even back in the top 75!

The next instalment of the fastest ever fallers from number one in nearly thirty years of my monthly charts begins now with.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The three number ones that fell eleven places to number twelve:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE FIELDS OF ATHENRY - Paddy Reilly [January 1985]

Image

Chart run: 31 26 25 18 18 26 32 32 31 36 26 16 18 08 03 01 01 12 16 48

This was one of the longest-running hits of all time in Ireland, originally charting there in July 1983, and only dropping out forever in October 1985 - and it was quite a while before it reached number one in my chart, then became the first chart-topper to tumble to number 12.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEVER GONNA SAY I'M SORRY - Ace Of Base [November 1996]
Image
Chart run: 08 02 05 04 01 12 30
One of Sweden's most popular pop quartets - Ulf Ekberg, Jonas Berggren, Jenny Berggren and Malin "Linn" Berggren - had no less than six number ones on my chart. However, this one made a rather faster descent than most of the others. It was the third hit single from their album "The Bridge" in some territories, but the UK was not among them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DOLLY SONG (IEVA'S POLKA) - Holly Dolly [May 2007]

Image

Chart run: 04 01 01 01 01 01 12 15 19 23 35 39 40

The Crazy Frog and the Snuffie Bunny enjoyed spectacular success in a variety of countries - so why could Dolly the Donkey only manage top twenty placings in France, Belgium and Scandinavia? This version of "Ieva's Polka" toppled eleven places last year after spending five months as my number one - a duration that no other track had achieved since the end of 1999. Where will it be in the chart of the decade?

Then there was.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only number one that fell twelve places to number thirteen:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

YODEL IN THE CANYON OF LOVE - Do Re Mi Featuring Kerry McGregor [March 1998]

Image

Chart run: 14 11 11 11 12 19 18 17 01 01 13 30 38

Previously credited to Eden Fizz in 1995, this song was the UK's second choice for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997 - but perhaps it wouldn't have given us the win that Katrina and the Waves managed. The singer became much more well-known several years later, as a contestant in the 2006 series of "The X Factor".

And finally for today:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first number one that fell thirteen places to number fourteen:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE TIDE IS HIGH - Blondie [February 1981]

Image

Chart run: 23 08 01 14 30

One of my earliest number ones, this was the first one that fell straight out of the top ten - and with a tumble that has only been matched once, and beaten four times, in the twenty-eight years since. It was the only top ten hit in my chart for the American rock band fronted by Debbie Harry - but they also reached the top twenty with "Sunday Girl", "Dreaming" and "Island Of Lost Souls".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And, concluding this month's feature about the fastest ever fallers from my number one in nearly thirty years of my monthly charts.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The second number one that fell thirteen places to number fourteen:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MAEDCHEN / GIRLY GIRL - Lucilectric [November 1994]
Image
Chart run: 20 03 02 02 01 14 36
Mariah Carey prevented the German duo consisting of Luci van Org and Ralf Goldkind from getting to number one in their homeland, but their quirky single replaced Jam and Spoon (more of whom shortly!) at number one in my chart. The original German version was a top five hit in Austria and Switzerland, but surprisingly reached the top ten in the Netherlands too, and charted for a week in Belgium - while an English version was featured in one of the "Never Ending Story" films.
Then there were.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The three number ones that fell fifteen places to number sixteen:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VIVER SENZA TEI - Furbaz [December 1989]
Image
Chart run: 25 01 01 01 01 16 24 35 42
Of all the many Eurovision Song Contest entries that reached my chart, just four made it to number one - and this Swiss entry spent the longest there. Having made an even bigger climb to the top than the fall that ensued, it remains my only number one in nearly thirty years that never occupied any other top fifteen position! And, perhaps unsurprisingly, it is the only song I have ever bought that is sung in the Romans[c]h language.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

KALEIDOSCOPE SKIES - Jam And Spoon featuring Plavka [November 1997]

Image

Chart run: 12 02 01 16 31

"Right In The Night" was the only one that spent more than a single month at the top, but Rolf Ellmer and the late Markus Löffel had an incredible seven number ones on my chart. Two were as Tokyo Ghetto Pussy, while the other five were as Jam and Spoon. And on all five of the latter, they were joined by Plavka Lonich, a Croatian/Peruvian singer born in America. This one took the biggest tumble, in the fourth of just five months in my top forty, and currently sits only just inside the top 900 of my all-time chart.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VIVA LA VIDA - Coldplay [February 2009]
Image
Chart run: 10 01 01 01 01 16 ...
The inspiration for this list, the current number sixteen in my chart was last month's number one. "Viva La Vida" has already spent over eight months in the UK Top 75 for Coldplay, and proved extremely popular in other countries. Even some of those in which Alizee's wonderful "J'en Ai Marre" was a hit five years earlier!
And finally:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The number one that fell nineteen places to number twenty:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WENN ICH DICH NICHT LIEBEN WüRDE - Nicole [July 1993]
Image
Chart run: 14 06 01 01 01 20 29
The German singer who once won the Eurovision Song Contest has had three number ones in my chart. This was the second of the three, following "Ein Leises Lied" from 1991, and a few months ahead of "Mehr Als Nur Zusammen Schlafen Geh'n", which reached the top at the end of 1993. But, by diving nineteen places to number 20, "Wenn Ich Dich Nicnt Lieben Würde" is the fastest faller ever from the number one position. That's quite a record, and might never be beaten! But the same could probably be said for Nicole's total of twenty-one top ten hits in my chart - currently, that is seven more than anybody else!
