~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is one of a series of six threads which cover eighteen years of
Europarade hits. The others can be found here:
1980 to 1982 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52562
1983 to 1985 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52563
1986 to 1988 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52564
1989 to 1991 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52565
1992 to 1994 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52566
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

More recently known as the Euro Hit 40, the Europarade was a chart combining the weekly charts of various European countries into a single countdown..It was first compiled and aired in May 1976, and was broadcasted weekly on a variety of AM/FM radio stations around the continent until the beginning of 1994. The main weekly shows were those of TROS-Radio on Hilversum 3, and on SR-1 Europawelle - the former were the original compilers, but by the end of this period, responsibility had shifted to the latter - and the charts and other details which are now going to be presented in a series of these threads, each covering a three-year period, are primarily from notes made while listening to these broadcasts, and others, during these years.

Changes in the basis of compilation - and indeed the presentation of the weekly programmes - will be mentioned at appropriate points of the various threads. However, the main raw material for the chart was the top fifteen positions of each major country's weekly singles chart, combined on a points system. Each chart-topper received 15 points, each number two received 14 points, and so on down to each number 15 receiving 1 point.

Initially, only six countries were combined into the Europarade - Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and the UK. During 1979, Denmark and Italy were added; during 1980, Austria and Switzerland; and in 1983 Ireland was added. From that point on (and, therefore, the majority of the period covered here) the Europarade was a top 40 chart based on the charts of these eleven countries. 1983 was also the year in which the length of the chart was increased from a top 30 to a top 40.

I will try to update at least a couple of these threads with a couple of weeks each day if possible - but there is some incompleteness/uncertainty in the notes - so corrections and other observations will be very gratefully received. For at least part of this period, virtually all the constituent charts are now accessible in various places, so it may be possible to completely analyse the occasional chart into its points totals from each and every country - but to do this for every chart would involve far too much extra work. However, as some of the Europarade presenters used to mention every country in which each hit was charting, those details will usually accompany the weekly charts on these threads.

This was the first ever Europarade, which francisplaiy recently posted on another thread:

Keep up the good work! :)

Hello,

I got a mail from Francis about your work on the Europarade.

I own a very large collection of Europarade charts from the start on 27 May 1976 until the end of 1987. The broadcasting company TROS ended the compilation and publication of the Europarade chart. I received the charts on paper on a weekly base because I was a member on the mailinglist.

Last year I have made scans of all my charts. They will be published on the Internet, but that takes some time. The only chart I miss is 4 Januari 1986 and the Eurobusters of 14 September 1985. Does anybody has information on those charts?

I'm looking forward on any information starting 1988 until the end or start of the EuroHit40 chart. First I have to make a list of questions.

You will hear from me soon.

Greetings,
Hans

PS. In a few days I will post some more background on the first 604 charts.

How much of the Music & Media chart do you have?

I am especially interested in 2000-2002 and October-December 2004 because I have found the rest of the charts (from Oct. 1995-1999, 2003-Sept 2004, and 2005-Present) on the internet on my own.

Hello Hans,
there are already two threads here that have been started with post-1987 info (Europarade 1989-91 and Europarade 1992-93). As time goes by, hopefully, with help of us all, we'll manage to get an (almost) complete archive.

On this thread:

http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1224473

we have, between us, managed to identify 36 of the top 40 positions in that first chart of 1986. As you are probably aware, TROS didn't actually broadcast the chart that week - and I don't think any other radio station did either. It may still be possible, however, to fill the gaps from the eleven national charts involved.

When you say the "Eurobusters" of 14 September 1985, are you just meaning positions 31-40 of the chart, which were first included (and played on the weekly radio show) on Sunday 8th April 1984? Or is it something more like the present-day "Eurobusters" - singles not actually in the chart at all? The positions 31-40 I have for that week are:

31 ---- 01 PRINCESS - SAY I'M YOUR NUMBER ONE (GB9/IR 4)
32 35 12 IVAN - BAILA (E/F)
33 29 05 SIGI MARON - GEH NO NET FURT (A11)
34 Re 02 MARCELLA & GIANNI BELLA - L'ULTIMA POESIA (I11)
35 ---- 01 LUNE DE MIEL - PARADISE MI AMOR (F11)
36 23 04 BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - GLORY DAYS (A10)
37 18 11 LES RITA MITSOUKO - MARCIA BAILA (F10)
38 40 08 WOLFE TONES - MY HEART IS IN IRELAND (IR9)
39 Re 07 GARY LOW - HOW MUCH YOU MEAN TO ME (E9)
40 Re 02 BRYAN FERRY - SLAVE TO LOVE (I9)

That was a rare week in which three hits got into the Europarade on the strength on one #7 placing and nothing else!

I have already seen those threads and they are very interesting for me. I choose this thread for my first post on UKMIX because 1976 was the start of the Europarade. In the link http://www.mediafire.com/?xqljsso5hjr you can download and hear a two hour TROS broadcast in Dutch of the first chart on the 27th May 1976.

Greetings,
Hans

I can't recall if the chart of the 4th of Januari 1986 was actualy broadcasted by the TROS. At the end of the year sometimes other programs appear. For example year charts or something else.

The Eurobuster is a single not in the chart. In other words not the number 31-40. In the right thread I place a link to the scan of 11th Januari 1986. That's gives you an idea of my material.

Greetings,
Hans

A bit of history on the “chart of the charts” as they claimed in the past.

The chart starts on Thursday Ascension the 27th of May 1976 on Hilversum 3 with 30 singles from the UK (BBC Radio 1 British Top 50), The Netherlands (Nationale Hitparade), West-Germany (Musik Informationen Aktuelle 50), Belgium (BRT2 Top 30), France (RTL Top 50) and Spain (Radio Madrid Superventas 30). The chart is compiled on a point system from the first 30 singles in each chart of the participating countries. In the beginning the chart is repeated on Saturday on Hilversum 2.

Hugo van Gelderen, chief Hilversum 3 of the broadcasting company TROS, is the spiritual father of the Europarade. He travels for two months through Europe to deliberate with radio station about the delivery of the local charts. DJ Ferry Maat and Ad Roland presented most of the Europarade charts on Dutch radio.

My name is on the mailing list. In that way I get the chart on paper. The size is approximately an A4 size. On the top of the chart you see the coloured logo of four spacestrollers above Europe. You can see an image on the cover of my book.
On the 5th of April 1979 Italy, Denmark and Switzerland start participating. The Top 15 of each country is then the base while compiling the Europarade. On the 10th of May 1979 Austria is added. Through the years different local charts are used while compiling the Europarade. As last country Ireland is added on the 9th of October 1983. On that day the Europarade is compiled on base of local charts from eleven European countries.

Starting on the 8th of April 1984 a real printed chart is distributed on A3 size with 40 singles. The chart gets another logo and in shade the text “chart of charts” is printed. Underneath the chart of the 15th of April 1984 a list of 10 singles (from each participating country one) named Eurobusters appeared. A Eurobuster is “A song we’re sure will crack the charts all over the continent.”. On the 28th of Januari 1985 the size gets a little smaller (236 x 344 mm.).

Number 52 of 1987 is the last printed Europarade chart. The next week the yearchart 1987 is distributed with the following message:
“With this last year-issue we inform you that we finished the existence of the Europarade. For futher information please contact “Buma Stemra”, Mr. H. Endlich phone (0)20-5407911”.
There exists a printed yearchart of 40 singles over the years 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Greeting from Holland on 'Queensday',
Hans

thank you Hans for the explanation.
I knew about the beginning but switched over to the Top 100 of Eurotipsheet, then M&M which is thesedays Billboard. So I did not know about the end.

Can you keep the 76 thread alive?

I was interested to learn - from listening to that first show on the link you provided earlier - that Tros originally presented the Europarade on two different days, on different radio stations. Was the Saturday broadcast just a repeat of what had aired on the Thursday, or another live show featuring the same records? Ferry Maat mentioned the date, and/or that it was "Thursday", several times in that edition.

[ It would seem that there were no commercial breaks on Dutch radio at this time? When I listened to Hilversum 3 in the early 1980s there were - but only two per hour - just before, and just after, the hourly news. ]

As the first Europarade number one, "Save Your Kisses For Me" dives out of the chart from number five, the new number one is one of just four hits that have been in the Europarade ever since it began!

Note that nineteen of this week's hits are charting in just one of the six countries - including the same song by two acts in different languages, both riding high in Germany!

In the beginning the chart is repeated on Saturday on Hilversum 2.

On Saturday it was another live show with the same or another DJ. I just listed to the programe on 18 Februari 1978. They also use other jingles on the other station.

On the public stations Hilversum 1 thru 4 there were only commercial blocks around the news.
