Sandra - (I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena

(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena is one of the best Euro tracks of the 80s never to be a hit in the UK - in 1985 it reached Number 1 in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland amongst other countries, also topping the Eurochart Hot 100. Sandra is known, it at all, in the UK only as the partner of Engima's Michel Cretu, and the "mystery voice" in numerous Enigma tracks.

Sorry guys, but I can't stand this one!

I had it on a random compilation that was made in Holland that I picked up at the Notting Hill Carnival, and was like "WTF is this?" but no, it's just far too cheesy for me!

It's OK. I like the confused mix of sex and religion that Europop does so "well".

I have the 12'' single - I normally hate this kind of stuff but there is something to Sandra's cheesiness that's irresistible.

Indeed - one of very few Europarade number ones that didn't even reach the top 75 in the UK. Not for the want of trying - it was released at least once, maybe twice?

Sandra did eventually get a solo hit in the UK - not quite top 40, unfortunately - with "Everlasting Love", as well as her successes with Enigma.

I liked "Maria Magdalena" a lot. On the B-side of at least one of the versions of the single I bought, there is also a good instrumental version of it, billed as "Party Games" (words taken from elsewhere in its lyrics!).

Idd, she released it twice in the UK:
First release @ November 1985, peaking up @ No'91, and a 2nd try @ May 1986 peaking up @ No'87.
Other singles that manage to enter the UK Top-100:
Everlasting Love: No'88 (1987 release), No'45 (1988 release)
Heaven Can Wait: No '97 (March 1989)

Poor Sandra had no luck cracking the UK market

I remember like it was Yesterday ...love at first sight with this song ...there are many tracks i like from Sandra Discography and with no doubt "We'll be together" , " Little girl " and "Around my heart " are at the same level of Maria Magdalena...in my opinion

This is pretty good. Wonder why it flopped twice in the UK, sounds a lot like Laura Brannigan's "Self Control" in the chorus.
