Nice list!! The bodyguard was massive in Japan!
It was the third best selling album of 1993! (and was actually very close to#2!)

Wow... It almost amazes me how many seemingly random songs by Western artists sell massively in Japan, whereas some other megahits released on physical CD barely sold anything at all

it kinda under-represents the queen of Japan, Mariah Carey.. with #1's at above 3,5 million, Daydream and Merry Christmas at above 2,5 million, Music Box not far behind at 2,3 million and Butterfly and Rainbow at 1,5 and 1,0 million respectively. (did i mention 1m for Emotions?)

Others have updated certs, as well- i.e. The Immaculate Collection for 1 million.

Mimi was the Queen of foreign-act sales in Japan. It didn't hurt that she was on Sony at the time, too. :P

Japan freaks out about Lady Gaga for the last 2-3 years - that makes me wonder: Looking at all the million certifications of Mariah Carey, was her hype even bigger than Gaga's in the 90s?

I think so, yes. Her impact keeps her selling out Tokyo Dome or Rainbow Hall to this day.

Mariah had to cancel shooting the Boy I Need You video in Tokyo because when news spread she was there.. ten thousands of fans came to see her causing a turmoil and that was in 2003.

Mimi Carey's album sales in Japan took a tumble once she was off of Sony, though. Even The Emancipation of Mimi didn't do nearly as well, comparatively, in Japan as it did in the USA.

u are right Glitter stumbled at 500k, so did Greatest Hits and CB only sold 400k, while TEOM stalled at 350k and EMC² at 150k, until Memoirs flopped with 100k and MCIIY did vanish after 25k.

If you referred to this
http://www18.ocn.ne.jp/~hbr/

Otherwise you can send email to RIAJ (English site) email to ask for Madonna certifications.

Thank you so much for posting all that! Your effort is much appreciated :D

I can't at the horrible undercertification of Michael's earlier albums, though

The RIAJ is pretty much as useless as the RIAA because some artists are very well certified and others are crucially undercertified so that comparisons on the basis of RIAJ certifications are rather pointless.

album - gold - 100,000 - Thriller - 19910725 - 199403
album - gold - 100,000 - BAD - 19910725 - 199411

The RIAJ certifications were based on released date from 1989.
So did you see the release date of
Thriller - 1991/07/25
Bad - 1991/07/25?

So yes, the re-issue from 1991/07/25 sold another 100,000 copies.
You can check on "eil.com" about Japanese versions of Thriller & Bad. The first CD was around 1984 or something. then 1987 when Bad released, a new re-issue of Thriller came out, this 1991 re-issue because of the "Dangerous". You can distinguish the different re-issue by looking at the catalogue numbers.

Similar to Madonna
album - gold - 100,000 - True Blue - 19890525 - 199403
album - gold - 100,000 - Like A Virgin - 19890525 - 199403

Both re-issue from 1989/05/25 after the release of Like A Prayer, so it's impressive that after 5 years it still could sold another 100,000 copies after the peaks of both albums.

^ Oh wow, can't believe I missed all that! Thanks for the useful lesson hoieagle

Then yes, it is quite impressive that they sold that much more since then, especially since the Japanese market doesn't have nearly as many strong catalogue sellers as in the West.

Yes, the song was written for a popular Japanese drama. Initially a Japan-only single, but later they released it in Canada as well, and I believe the US too.

Glitter was still released by Sony Music Japan unlike all other countries in the world! But it's such a shame the way Mariah is selling now! Hope for her new album to be succesful again!
