Grybop's Best of 2012 (Video summary)

Just like last time (and every year actually), my year-end chart contains songs that may have not been released as singles; in fact some of them may have not been released within the year at all.
It merely represents the songs I loved the most during the previous 12 months and started to like within that period, or shortly before.
I felt so out of touch with current music in 2012 - yet it's the first time in many years that no real oldies made my year-end chart.

So without further due, here are the 20 songs I loved the most in 2012:

20 Monsieur Minimal feat. Hiras - Bitter

Image

First of many greek entries this year - this one was selected as buzz single off Monsieur Minimal's eagerly anticipated second english language album. Diction aside, this is really a lovely song.

19 Ivi Adamou - La la love

Image

Ivi represented Cyprus in this year's ESC, and while her performance was, let's say, less than stellar, the song had a lasting impact on me for some reason, always cheering my up when it came on the radio in the summer.

There's another Eurovision song much, much higher - albeit not quite so.

18 Alpine - Hands (Goldroom remix)

Image

It's been a great year for both australian band Alpine and american producer Goldroom, each providing a couple of memorable tunes and remixes.
This is where they met - and what a great result indeed! Tropical beats meeting dreamy vocals in a thumping stream of sounds that make both head and feet move along in trance.

"La La Love" is really catchy, it should have finished second after "Euphoria" on Eurovision this year.

Great to see "La La Love" in the Top20. Amazing song and deserved a much higher rank on the ESC!

17 Jessie Ware - Running

Image

A sleeper hit this one, I'd been hearing it on the radio, originally drawn in by Jessie's sultry voice - it wasn't until how I noticed the electric guitar towards the end of the song that I really liked it.

16 Emma Louise - Jungle

Image

Another sleeper hit here, which I first heard via our own FSC contest, then it just blasted all over the radio out of a sudden. Having originally misheard the lyrics, I thought she said her heart was a jungle - a much better version than many others who thought she was referring to her hair.

15 Gossip - Perfect world

Image

An instant classic to these ears at least, Gossip's lead single off their latest album was everything a fan could hope for. The album aparrently wasn't.

14 Jason Derulo - Breathing

Image

A sample from a recording by a bulgarian choir added a lot to this song's charm, another radio hit that I couldn't get enough of this year.

Ivi was just great!

Jessie Ware - underrated. So is Gossip although I wasn't entirely fussed on either one of them.

I'm surprised to see Jason here George... but it's a cracking song so nice one! Jessie Ware is more the sort of artist I think of when I think of you, good to see that too.

Jessie! Emma Louise! (FYI people, that was my FSC entry. *puffs chest proudly* ) <3

 @ thinking it was "my heart is a jungle" & @ other people thinking it was "my hair is a jungle" (listening to it now, I can see why people thought it was the latter)...hopefully you know it is "my HEAD is a jungle". :o, but :D :D that you deemed it one of your faves of 2012.

That Jessie song I discovered via FSC thanks to Blondini. Wouldn't have heard it otherwise (although radio here did play the Disclosure remix, which I wasn't fussed on).

Will have to listen to the rest, but I remember Ivi from ESC. Not a bad little pop tune.
Let's embrace the point of no return.

There is a distinct Oz flavour to this year's chart! Thank you all for your comments!

13 The 5th Galaxy Orchestra - Pour la vie

Image

Edith Piaf has rarely been sampled so imaginatively as by this greek project.

12 Peter Heppner - Give us what we need (Truth is not the key)

Image

Peter Heppner has one of the most distinctive voices ever, perfect for delivering bitter lyrics, as in this case, the b-side to his comeback single in 2012.

11 Rihanna - Where have you been

Image

Constantly anxious to stay current and relevant, Rihanna keeps churning out albums and hits year after year. Thankfully, most of them are actually good. The video for Where Have You Been though was a total mess.

10 Saint Etienne - Last days of disco (Beat Connection remix)

Strings! STRINGS! Take those vocals and drench them in STRINGS! OMG, you've rendered the vocals inaudible! Who cares as long as my ears are filled with STRINGS!

You should post the weekly chart here mate! I am missing more good music on UKMIX since You and Neil left the site... Only Tony still brings original and new music to the site :-?

Indeed, the guitar part is best one in this track. There are some betters on the album for me though.
