The first urban single from Beyoncé's surprise album, "Drunk in Love" has thus far peaked at #2 in the US, returning the R&B megastar to the top echelons of the American singles chart, a plateau she's not seen in four years.
Just why it's taken her so long is irrelevant; with this song, success was inevitable. Musically, the track offers a wide range of instruments: a heavy bass, subtle synthesizers, and a very prominent, very addictive trap beat. Lyrically, the song is as sensual a single as Beyoncé has dared to record, armed with several double entendres and an almost tangible lust. Her husband, Jay-Z, seems quite affected by the raw sexuality Beyoncé's voice oozes, even carelessly inventing new words ("breasteses").
Her best single since "Countdown", "Drunk in Love" has already had a sizeable cultural impact with its "surfboard" lyric, even prompting a spin off song of the same title by American rapper Cassie.
This song is addictive as they make them. Expect it to be one of the defining singles of a very, very successful era for Mrs. Carter.
