Released: 4th August 2014.
The official second single from Nicki Minaj's upcoming album, 'The Pinkprint', "Anaconda" offers a stark contrast to the sombre, slow ballad lead single which preceded it.
Minaj's singles are usually hot messes, brilliant masterpieces, or some mixture of the two and that's just what "Anaconda" is: a hot mess of a song with flashes of genius to be found along the rollercoaster ride. Thankfully, it's significantly closer to 'brilliant' than 'hot mess' on the quality spectrum, but the overall playful tone of the song is sure to turn some people off as is the overtly sexual cover art. The "Baby Got Back" sample is cleverly used, though, and there are some winning lines ("He can tell I ain't missing no meals").
Though "Pills N Potions" was definitely less divisive, this is closer to the banger that so many fans were awaiting and it's a return of the over-the-top personality that Nicki is adored for. The hype took this song straight to the top of US iTunes, but we'll have to wait and see how the general public appreciates the song, and how radio receives it, after all the press about Minaj's abnormally massive rear end dies down. Hopefully, "Anaconda" will live up to its name and have a more "Super Bass"-like than "Stupid Hoe"-like chart run.
