The Weeknd started as a PBR&B artist who channelled some of his energy into pop, with a sound reminiscent of Michael Jackson, which is perhaps most noticeable on the single "Can't Feel My Face" and "In the Night". For those who fell for his work as an PBR&B singer, that version of the singer is not gone, as proven by "Often" and "Tell Your Friends", both of which benefited from a helping hand from long-time producers Illangelo and Quenneville. Other producers include Kanye West, Mike Dean and Stephan Moccio.
Besides "Earned It", which catapulted The Weeknd into the spotlight, featured guests Labrinth, Ed Sheeran, and Lana Del Rey each help to bolster the album's quality. It's far from easy to highlight a single song on this album, but "Shameless", "Angel", and "In the Night" are the most impressive stand-outs.
All in all, 'Beauty Behind the Madness' makes for a solid sophomore effort, and proves that the star's big hit singles are dwarfed by some yet-to-be-heralded album gems.
