Alessia Cara - Scars to Your BeautifulThe third single from the Canadian singer/songwriter Alessia Cara, "Scars to Your Beautiful" is a poignantly penned anthem of empowerment for this generation's youth. Although aimed primarily at a female audience, Cara has acknowledged that the song's theme of self-acceptance and self-love is open to members at all points on the gender spectrum.

Cara's debut single, "Here", introduced the then-teenager as part of the Lorde clan of new wave anti-conformists, but, whereas that song was tailored with purposefully darker threads, "Scars to Your Beautiful" just bursts at every seam with colour; joyous, impassioned encouragement; and love, as it narrates, through its verses, the tale of a girl struggling with body acceptance issues believing in the narrowly constructed image that defines beauty. The chorus sweeps the female protagonist, and its listeners, into a warm, bear-like embrace, as Cara declares, "You don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart, no scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful."

There have been so many great songs in this vein in the past: from TLC's "Unpretty" to Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" to P!nk's "F**kin' Perfect", but "Scars to Your Beautiful" is an inspired, genuine, uniquely flavoured ballad that earns its place in the pantheon of empowerment anthems.
