So, how exactly do you go about following up a landmark track such as "Lola's Theme"? With great difficulty is the answer, but the team of Simon Marlin and Max Reich give it a go nonetheless. Paying off dividends is the attention to detail they've put into the production - this is no home-synthesiser job, but the culmination of enlisting live session musicians, not to mention the quality performance of soulful gospel vocalist Cookie. Yet, amidst all that sparkle, there's something missing, and I can't help feel that the problem lies with the song itself. Yes, it is enjoyable to a point, but for me, "Back To Basics" is an exceptional execution of an unexceptional composition.
When you've had one of the biggest dance anthems of the summer it can prove tricky to follow up - just ask Modjo. However, Shapeshifters are giving it a go at having a lasting career with this second single "Back To Basics". Unfortunately, like all too many dance acts, they've fallen foul of the "do a song that's vaguely similar to our last one, only not as good" problem, and rather like the aforementioned Modjo, these guys might struggle to make the Top 10 with this single. After that, they'll merely be a distant memory of "Lola's Theme".
