Gwen Stefani feat. Eve
Released: 14th March 2005.
First we had Big Brovaz updating a song from "The Sound Of Music", and now Gwen Stefani's borrowed just a little bit from "Fiddler On The Roof". Gwen can't seem to put a foot wrong at the moment, and this fascinating urban take on the Topol classic "If I Were A Rich Man" is a very strong second single. The idea of putting an urban beat to the song seems dreadful, but the resulting track has worked perfectly. Only problem with the song is a certain amount of over-exposure, but other than that it's a great pop song.
To pull off borrowing a sample from "Fiddler On The Roof" takes a lot, but "Rich Girl" is unbelievably catchy, and Gwen Stefani has the creativity and talent for it to succeed. Having said that, Eve's rap does seem a bit disjointed, and the song begins to irritate after a while.
