Released: 28th February 2000.
Given that the original version of this track was released some decades ago, it's rather disappointing that Madonna and William Orbit haven't been able to come up with something a little different. It's basically a re-hash of the original, the only real difference being Madonna's vocals and that it's been jazzed up a bit. It's relatively catchy and will probably do well, but given what they could have done, this is a bit of a lame attempt.
"American Pie" is a true classic record. A wonderful piece of music, which combines mourning with just plain brilliance. So why has Madonna decided to murder it? The first time I heard this I barely recognised it. Please, no matter how much you like "American Pie", or indeed Madonna (and I rate both very highly) give this a wide berth. When she decided to record this it really was "the day the music died".
