Janet (stylized as janet.) is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on May 18, 1993 by Virgin Records. Prior to its release, Jackson was at the center of a high-profile bidding war over her recording contract. In 1991, her original label A&M sought to renew her contract, while others, such as Atlantic, Capitol, and Virgin all vied to sign her. After meeting with Virgin owner Richard Branson, she signed with the label for a $40 million contract, making her the world's then-highest paid musical act.

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with the largest first week sales in history for a female artist at the time. It became Jackson's third consecutive album to top the chart, as well as reaching the number one position in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Certified sixfold platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), it sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and is one of the world's best-selling albums. It cemented her as an international icon and sex symbol, and is listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 200 Definitive Albums of All Time.

This album never gets enough love...but I guess in comparison to the albums it is stuck between (released wise) it's kinda average.

I was always confused with the amount of interludes though.

That's the Way Love Goes 10
    You Want This 10
    If 10
This Time 10 (so epic, though! )
    Throb 10
What'll I Do 9 (I think this is really underrated)

    New Agenda 10
    Because of Love 9
    Again 10
Where Are You Now? 10 (lovely!)
The Body That Loves You 7 (the filler of the album and it seems like people agree... Too long and repetitive, overstays its welcome by about two minutes)
    Any Time, Any Place 10

    -----

    Bonuses:

Whoops Now 9 (always felt that this was very poppy for Janet)
    And On And On 10

My favourite Janet album along with All For You and The Velvet Rope. I'll try to discover her earlier material soon.

I hated That's the Way Love Goes. But now I rediscovered both, the song and it's parent album. I LOOOOOVE Throb! And If is great too. Whoops Now will always be the first janet song I heard on radio... nostalgia! <3

This album (like many of her albums) is so diverse! I wish I experienced it during the summer of 1993.

'If' is my favourite song in life. I know it sounds like a cliche, but it literally became my favourite song ever from the very first time I heard it (which wasn't until January 2002)

    Listening now!

This album contains some of her most creative and experimental music: most notably This Time, but also the house-influenced Throb and the alternative-like What'll I Do (can I ask why many fans don't like this song?).

The only unnecessary track for me is The Body That Loves You. I could do without it.

The 1-2-3-4-5 punch of That's the Way Love Goes, You Want This, If, This Time and Throb totally slays. Go on gurl, miss Janet

Okay, I'm listening to the b-sides now and the track list should have been as follows:

1 That's the Way Love Goes
    2 You Want This
    3 If
    4 This Time
    5 Throb
    6 What'll I Do
    7 Funky Big Band
    8 And On And On
    9 New Agenda
    10 Because of Love
    11 Again
    12 Where Are You Now?
    13 70's Love Groove
    14 Any Time, Any Place

The album is near perfect as it is, but the above makes for a faultless, thumping listen. As much as I like Funky Big Band, And On And On is the better uptempo and it brings more versatility to the album. I've warmed to The Body That Loves You tonight, but 70's Love Groove is saucy as hell and that and Any Time, Any Place would be perfect closures. I don't really understand why these two songs were left off the album. I like her cover of One More Chance but I can understand why it didn't make janet., whereas And On And On and 70's Love Groove are very clearly wasted opportunities.

EDIT: Scratch removing Funky Big Band; I love it. It's incredible. But yeah, The Body That Loves You, even though I'm warming to it with each listen, can go.

This is definitely my favourite Janet album, I even prefer it to Rhythm Nation and The Velvet Rope (although those two are very close competition and All For You is not far off either). Musically, she was much more innovative than any other R&B female artist (even more than Aaliyah IMO), and the mix of elements in this album testifies to that fact. Damn, she had rock, dance, funky influences and even an operatic bridge in This Time

On top of that, no one sings with such a sultry voice as hers. The first intro followed by That's The Way Love Goes just makes me close my eyes and gets me all shivery She is THE sex.

We had the kind of night where morning comes too soon
We used the light from a flickering candle across the room
To make the kind of shadows that only one thing could make: Love
