Cucumber and Banana are Russell T. Davies's first work for Channel 4 since 2000 and will examine "the passions and pitfalls of 21st century gay life".

Previously in the works at US cable channel Showtime, eight-part hour-long drama Cucumber will air on Channel 4 and will follow 46-year-old Henry and his boyfriend on a disastrous date night.

Its sister series Banana - comprised of eight half-hour episodes - will follow the lives of Cucumber's younger characters in more detail and will be broadcast on E4.

Both shows will also be accompanied by Tofu, a factual web series, billed as "an anarchic online guide to sex inspired by the dramas each week".

"I once read about a scientific institute which had studied the male erection," Davies said. "It divided the hard-on into four categories, from soft to hard.

"One, tofu. Two, peeled banana. Three, banana. And four, cucumber. Right there and then I knew I had my drama."

I was able to watch the pilot episodes earlier today.

Cucumber was funny and at the same time, depressing. It began a little campy and suddenly turned into something devastating! The ending is a major cringe! The monologue/fanfiction about Ryan Reynolds was too much! I cannot look at Ryan the same way again from now on.

The whole Kylie's "The Disco Needs You" scene + Boney M's "Rasputin" scene.
Now they ruined the two songs with those disastrous scenes.

Freddie is so pretty! I think I already have a crush on him the moment he stepped in.

Banana was ok. The lead actor is kinda annoying though. Its more like an episode of Skins + more Freddie!

I think Dean is hilarious... chasing me out with Pitchforks I can't stand the lead in Banana, I've come across some of those men and I make a smart decision to avoid them. Especially in London.

    EP 02.

    The Henry Test!
It's effective though.. effective way to start an argument!

Freddie is so full of himself huh. The monologue though. Lordt!
"This face is mine! It is copyright to me and it's not to be used for masturbation without my expressed permission."
    That line was brilliant!

It's the first time I heard the term "side". I am not aware of it at all!

Singing to some Sylvester in the car though. Love it!

When Freddie snapped his white briefs. WERQ!!!

This episode of Banana is GOOD! The performance of the lead and the entire story is fantastic!
I was touched by the scene when Scotty and the woman had a conversation in the cafe.

Banana is very Skins, like I said previously.

It's the Skins factor that puts me off. Skins was too dark for me to ever fully enjoy, Mitch Hewer aside.

I've seen loads of clips for this, I'll probably give it a shot.

It did feel like an updated QAF at times, even the locations. But it just perpetuates this misconception gay men have sex on the brain constantly and the day is filled with using Grindr. There was a lot of moments where I cringed in Cucumber, particularly the whole Ryan Reynolds thing. The portrayal of older gay men was also embarrassing. I thought it would touch a few nerves, perhaps be too close for comfort, but no it was the usual stereotypical crap.

It was worth watching, but I hope it improves. I actually found Banana the better of the two but I haven't watched this weeks episodes yet. Best part so far was Andrew Hayden Smith

Cucumber is alright. I am gonna keep with it and I have sort of enjoyed it so far in a just above average sort of way, just not totally engaged with it yet.

Banana on the other hand has been excellent really enjoyed both episodes.

Watched the second episode of Cucumber yesterday and I have to say I think it was a lot better . There were parts where I still found it uncomfortable to watch due to some of the lines/writing, still managed to make me cringe at times. But overall I think it has started to develop the story and focus on the characters more.

I enjoy both shows but "Banana" is definitely better than "Cucumber", it's much more intelligent and not just about sex.

This. Although the latest Banana was kind of non-dramatic after a good start - Bethany Black being the first ever trans actor in a lead role as a trans character in the UK.

Rufus Hound's bare arse. Not something i ever thought i'd see. Dougal exploring Hayley's vagina!
The tangled trio climax at the end of last week's Cucumber was hilarious!

    EP03

It's nice to see some back story on why Freddie ended up like that. Now I get to understand him more. I can totally relate with his story because something similar to that happened to me. When you think about it, it's very confusing because you are not sure if you were just forced or that is something you wanted. It definitely mess you up all your life.

The "attacking" scene where the three of them ended up being tangled was too much! The entire execution of that scene was brilliant!

    EP04

I love the different forms of getting laid scenes of the five main characters in the episode. I think Freddie and the Asian chick were adorable. I've never heard about Freddie's Michael Bay theory about the lead female casts but it was on point! The conversation about porn between Henry and that guy he met on the diner was real talk!

Another great Banana episode! The episodes of Scotty and Helen are the only standouts so far. It's about time to show a transgender's story and it was beautifully written. I honestly teared up when her family came to support her after all the things that happened.

I watched the guest three episodes. I'm a bit disgusted tbh at how it is fairly accurate but also distressing at how pathetic gay males can be.

Gays are age obsessed and it's a shame that older gays just can't be happy unless they are in or thinking of being in someone younger or unavailable.

The prevalence of 'open relationships' threesomes etc is foul. Whilst it highlights our life in a slightly humorous way, the portrayal of Freddie is awful and so is the sex between all of them. I've had similar situations but the 'anyone in' group sex thing is pathetic.

I'd love for once a positive portrayal of a gay person that isn't reliant on past stereotypes.

Would it restore your faith in gay men if you knew I had been in a steady relationship for 20 years ? I think this programme is accurate in depicting a certain gay lifestyle , the stereotypical one that is a revolving door of sexual encounters. Maybe they feel it wouldn't make particularly exciting TV if everyone was happily settled But it would be nice if they had at least one couple like that. Having said that, the portrayal of the younger characters is accurate of the sort of lifestyle I knew before settling.

Well that was hard hitting (pun intended).

Denise Black from Queer As Folk turning up as an omen-bearing ghost (Hazel, Vince's mother).

Banana was lovely and funny this week - the lead actress Charlie Covell also wrote the episode. I'm a bit like her or have been - that waiting for a sign before you act thing and OCD-ish behaviour.

Literally have no words for the last episode of Cucumber. I missed the first half of the episode so had no idea what was coming. I felt sick watching that last scene; it was horrendous. I felt so sorry for Lance. Hazel beforehand was just really creepy when she said she belonged with the boys in the water!

    So accurate and heart wrenching.

Such a powerful episode i'm surprised this has bombed as bad as it has in the ratings but their have been times where I have grown tired of some of the characters

Yes, it was a truly shocking ending. I had a feeling things might turn violent.
I think it was the best episode of the series, seeing Lance's life and events leading up to that moment.
After slating the first episode I'm glad I didn't give up on it, it turned out to be a pretty good drama overall. It will be interesting to watch the fallout from this in the final episodes.

I just watched the latest episode of Cucumber! WOW I have no words. It was so tragic, terrifying and disturbing! I felt kinda sick after watching it. At the same time, it was done so well! His entire life story and the flashbacks during the last ten minutes!

Cucumber follows the older characters and Banana the younger ones but the stories are connected and characters appear in both. I'd recommend watching episodes in tandem, so Cucumber/Banana Episode 1 and so on.

I'm surprised you all like this so much! I started on both series with high expectations and was really disappointed! Eventually gave up watching a couple weeks ago.

I much prefer 'Looking' in terms of gay drama
