Slovenia was one of my faves as well, one of the few successful attempts at a non-English modern banger in the Eurovision

Oh, a pity you didn't like the Irish entry. Personally, I think it was so emotional and lovely.
Glad you appreciate the Slovene entry, though.

That's awesome! I have the feeling that 2018 is the year we most agree on!

    #2 HUNGARY (10 points)

    AWS - Viszlát Nyár

Whilst the song's topic is a bit similar to Michael Schulte's 4th place in 2018, I prefer Hungary's approach of dealing with the loss of a parent. Whilst most artists try to evoke emotions by creating powerful ballads, AWS chose to set the stage on fire and let out their anger and agony and it works: The metal song is packed with adrenaline, epic screams and a memorable melody. It just feels 100% authentic and natural. A pity Hungary didn't end up Top 10 with this bold choice!

    #1 BELARUS (12 points)

    ALEKSEEV - Forever

It's the first time since 2007 that my favourite entry of the contest didn't qualify and it still hurts fundamentally. Even though ALEKSEEV seemed to be very nervous at the beginning of the performance, I still believe that he deserved to qualify because his performance was a treat! Of course, it was cheesy but at least, Belarus made an effort to illustrate the song's lyrics on stage. Azerbaijan had the same approach 2017 and but executed it way better, though.

Maybe switching to English lyrics wasn't a smart idea because it felt less authentic but in my opinion, the song still transfers the original mysterious and magical atmosphere to the listener. I'm simply a sucker for "Russian" music... the melodramatic, melancholic nature of the song just makes my heart beating faster. I would love Ukraine, Russia and Belarus to submit entires carrying a stronger regional identity to Eurovision, in general.
That said, I'm grateful for Eurovision having introduced me to ALEKSEEV which has become one of my favourite male artists of all times.

No, both AWS and Michael participated in 2018. Feels like ages ago.

AWeSome song which (surprisingly) appealed to a lot of the Eurofans.

OMG, you are right! I don't know why but Michael Schulte's entry didn't feel that current to me. Dunno why.. maybe we Germans aren't used to finishing Top 5 after a strike of forgettable performances and horrible results haha

I have several issues with Alekseev in general. The main issue of the whole package was the evident lack of plan, the team rushed from one idea to the next, making about 5 different versions of the song in the process. The staging also tried to pack plenty of ideas into those three minutes, which made a whole thing too complex for Alekseev (besides just singing he needed to memorize all the cues to get the right camera angles and positions, which proved to be too much).
Essentially, they tried to fix things that weren't broken (the simple national final staging would have worked much better).
Another issue was that Alekseev was basically given the national final victory on a plate (the same way ZENA had it), since it was financially convenient for Belarusian delegation to outsource all of the financial duties to a well-funded production team.
In general, "Forever" is a nice enough (slightly too emo) pop song.

I am not trying to seduce you... Would you like me to seduce you? Is that what you're trying to tell me?
