CamdenTownJohn - Weekly Personal Chart 1974-1981

From 1974 to 1981 I compiled my personal Top 30 (Top 40 from Feb 1975) - my 14th birthday was in October 1974.
These charts show my changing taste from chart pop to soft-rock to punk and post-punk. Throughout the series (and especially after the opening few weeks), there are many records which never made the national Top 50.
As you can see from the BMRB positions, the chart was originally influenced by sales positions, and the wish to keep a bit ahead of the BBC chart.

I've never thought these would be of interest to anyone but me, but I've been asked to post them, so here's the first batch...

16th July 1974 [BMRB position in square brackets: this/last]

This record by The Sweet still goes through my head occasionally - probably my fagvourite of their hits.
My brother brought 'Young Girl' back from his holiday in Canada on it's original release in 1968. Unfortunately it had an over-sized hole in the middle, to fit American record players, so we had to use an adaptor.
Jim Stafford had just had a hit with 'Spiders and Snakes' and this was just as strange. The comma is the title is important to the meaning.
Leo Sayer's record is the only song I know which mentions Ladbroke Grove.
Paul da Vinci was the singer on the first Rubettes single Sugar Baby Love'.
MISSING HITS FROM THE BBC TOP 30: George McCrae, Drifters, Charles Aznavour, Gary Glitter, Three Degrees, Intruders, The Main Ingredient, Stylistics.

By 1975 I hated the Bay City Rollers.

    30 (-) Eric Clapton - I Shot The Sheriff [31/43] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRgcwT9X2J8
I remember seeing that Rolling Stones video on 'Top Of The Pops'.
The Jimmy Ruffin track was a re-issue from 1965.
Eric Clapton was doing a Bob Marley song. i'd never heard of Bob Marley, or indeed Eric Clapton.
Ignored BBC Top 30 entry: Diana Ross/Marvyn Gaye

29 (28) Terry Jacks - If You Go Away [24/10]
    30 (15) First Class - Beach Baby [36/19]
The Wizzard sound was getting tired and repetitive by now, and this one didn't sell very well.
This was Cockney rebel's second hit, not as good as 'Judy Teen' but they came back strongly in 1975 with 'Make Me Smile'.
Bobby Goldsborough's hit was also a Coca-Cola advert which went 'ice cold Coke down the back of my throat, hello summertime".

    30 (22) Jim Stafford - My Girl Bill [30/20]
I Bought that Showaddywaddy record, which they wrote themselves (as they did their first four hits). I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon in Spring 1975.
Cozy Powell's previous hits had been drum records which he didn't sing on. I still can't go to Belsize Park (which is quite close to where I live) without thinking of the line "You're the JS Bach of Belsize Park".
Polly Brown had had hits with Pickettywitch and also sung on the Sweet Dreams hit 'Honey Honey' which was in the charts at the same time as this one.

This Arrows record didn't sell well, unlike their previous hit 'A Touch Too Much'. This is much more rock-orientated and appealed to me as I got someone to buy me it for my birthday. The following year they got a show on Granada TV. It was on this show that Joan Jett heard their song 'I Love Rock And Roll' while she was on tour in the UK with the Runaways, and later had a hit with it.
The Pearls made the sales charts with their previous release 'Guilty', but not with this one.

First Class were not a real band, but session musicians. Singer Tony Burrows had appeared previously on hits by The Flowerpot Men, Edison Lighthouse, White Plains and the Pipkins. Apparently he once appeared in three bands on the same edition of 'Top Of The Pops'.
I really fancied Kiki Dee after seeing her do this song on 'Top Of The Pops'.
    Brian Protheroe is an actor.
Andy Fairweather-Low had previously made hits with Amen Corner.
Adam Faith was shortly to star in 'Stardust' with David Essex.

Someone has made a YouTube video to Re-Union's 'Life Is A Rock', a song which mentions numerous bands and artists, but he doesn't seem to have included Noddy Holder.
Sailor's record was a warning about the growth in the number of cars.
Peter Shelley sung the vocals on the first Alvin Stardust hit 'My Coo Ca Choo'. When the record looked like becoming a hit, old rocker Shane Fenton was brought in to do the television miming, and became Alvin Stardust.

      NOT SO FAST!
Please, limit this with maximum two charts a day.
(and links for a new entries would do no harm - if you have enough time)

Fascinating stuff! It was in 1974 that I started to keep a list of how many times I played each and every track in my collection - something I have continued to do for more than 41 years.

Can I ask how you used to compile your charts? And did you include records you'd only heard on the radio, or just records you'd bought?

I thought I would be embarrassed by the fact that I liked some of these records, but looking at it now, I still like nearly all of them.

MyFriendJack, I was just putting in records I liked, the chart I would have like to see, but also trying to keep "ahead" of the BBC chart. I couldn't buy that many records, I bought Slade 'The Banging Man' and I got the Arrows record for my birthday but if anything I was buying less records than in 1972 and 1973.

I was really only listening to Capital and Radio Luxembourg then, and Radio One's 'Round Table' new release programme. I wasn't yet listening to rock programmes on Capital and Radio One, so the records I heard were quite limited. I sometimes listened to the Dutch pop stations RNI and Veronica until they closed at the end of August, but I wasn't yet listening to Radio Caroline which was playing rock and soul albums by then.

This R Dean Taylor song was a re-issue from the 1960s. The David Bowie song was a cover, he was moving into a soulful phase.

Excellent charts! From what i saw on your Capital Countdown thread i can predict that the things would become even better as punk/new wave era is approached.
I'm familiar with most of the songs which reached UK Top 40 at the time. The rest songs are absolutely unknown to me.
Wish 10cc would reached higher places. It's my favourite pop band of that period.
I'm looking for "TOP POPS/MUSIC NOW" and "MERSEYBEAT / MUSIC ECHO" Charts to complete my 60's singles charts collection.

Although it was always UK Top 30 at that time: Radio One, Radio Luxembourg, Top of the Pops, NME, Melody Maker, the daily newspapers and all the national sources used Top 30 charts, while of course the full official chart was Top 50, so no-one talked about the UK Top 40. Which is why my chart was a Top 30 as well.

I think 10cc's lyrics were too "clever" for some people.

I'll post a couple more charts tonight.

'Far Far Away' was the first track to be released from the soundtrack of the feature film 'Flame' starring Slade. But 'Gonna Make You A Star' was not from David Essex's forthcoming film 'Stardust', which like 'Flame' was also about a 1960s pop band.

I've just listened to it, probably for the first time I've heard it since since 1974. Not much like the rest of the chart, is it!

I love Slade and i love "Far Far Away". One of their best songs.
I'm looking for "TOP POPS/MUSIC NOW" and "MERSEYBEAT / MUSIC ECHO" Charts to complete my 60's singles charts collection.

Slade were trying out some different styles now. 'In For A Penny' from 1975 is one of my favourites, and possibly the only Slade record my wife likes. And when Noel Gallagher went on GLR radio in the 90s and picked out 'How Does It Feel' as a great Slade song, rather than one of the more famous hits, I knew he was a proper Slade fan. The first two albums I ever bought were the 'Sladest' compilation and their next LP 'Old New Borrowed And Blue' which has got some memorable melodic songs.
