Dutch is a national language in the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname in South America and the Dutch Antilles. In Belgium, it’s the official language of Flanders, the Northern region of the country, and is also spoken in Brussels, although the majority of the city’s population speak French. In Suriname and the Dutch Antilles, Dutch is still an official language, but several other languages are spoken there too.

In total, there are over 22 million native speakers of Dutch and it’s a popular second language in UKMix, Germany, the north of France and increasingly in Eastern Europe. You may also find older native speakers in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S. and Canada as many Dutch people migrated to these countries in the 1950’s.

Just to be clear, this is a place to discuss the Dutch language and maybe for native speakers to teach a few words and phrases to the rest of us - it's not The Official Get A Room Thread.

Why is it called Dutch in the first place? Should be Netherlandish.

There are three terms we need to define: Holland, the Netherlands, and Dutch. In Old English dutch simply meant “people or nation.” (This also explains why Germany is called Deutschland in German.) Over time, English-speaking people used the word Dutch to describe people from both the Netherlands and Germany. (At that point in time, in the early 1500s, the Netherlands and parts of Germany, along with Belgium and Luxembourg, were all part of the Holy Roman Empire.) Specifically the phrase “High Dutch” referred to people from the mountainous area of what is now southern Germany. “Low Dutch” referred to people from the flatlands in what is now the Netherlands. Within the Holy Roman Empire, the word “Netherlands” was used to describe people from the low-lying (nether) region (land). The term was so widely used that when they became a formal, separate country in 1815, they became the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The word “Holland” literally meant “wood-land” in Old English and originally referred to people from the northern region of the Netherlands. Over time, it came to apply to the entire country

    Haha! I remember that.

I love languages, so I'm cool with it. As long as we don't start making Ancient Zulu tribe language threads or something we're all good. I think we have the main ones covered now.

Dialects can be discussed in their closest language thread, so in this case, German.

Not me wondering why the Dutch call themselves Dutch, when I have no idea why we call ourselves Deutsch. So the two technically mean the same thing. Thank you for that, trebor.

I was wondering if there was a connection between Dutch and Deutsch. Really interesting read, trebor.

I'm so shocked that I have never made the connection of Dutch with Deutschland.
And this although I have studied the evolution of the Germanic language tree. Shame on me, really!
