And she was unique because she refused to be compartmentalized into one or the other side of her racial makeup. Just watching some of her interviews from back in the day, I wonder how it felt for a simple 20 year old to be patronized with the most dehumanizing of questions like "what exactly ARE you?" (asked by Oprah, no less). I will even go as far to say that most, if not all, biracial entertainers who followed owe Mariah a debt.
As for the Grammys - one of the reasons why Caution was reviewed so well was because of the changing demographics of the people who reviewed it. The rock critic's opinion bleeding into genres outside of rock music is out of flavour, and we now have more diverse opinions informed by different backgrounds being represented in major publications. Thats a great thing. The people reviewing music NOW are using Mariah as the standard with which they compare and contextualize new artists and music.
This could mean the same for Grammy voters. The voting committee who judged Daydream 25 years ago probably doesn't look like the committee that will be judging Caution in a few months. I think it's entirely reasonable to expect some R&B nominations, ESPECIALLY considering the tepid competition and expanding nominee ballot.
I really think you’re correct. The world is much more receptive to Mariah these days (at last!). People who grew up with her music and have been able to witness the evolution of music since then are better able to appreciate her influence, longevity, and artistry. New generations are discovering her every Christmas and many of the younger artists cite her as an inspiration, further getting her name out to the youth. The older generations are moving on...

Celebrate diverse talent and our strong and brilliant Mariah!

Also I think people are beginning to see just how resilient she is (we knew this of course) and there’s a certain respect for that

But have you ever been to any concert of hers? apart of some post 00 hits, she basically sings 90s songs.

Not many videos yet. I can't with her saying that no one knew this one, right after she retweeted that post teasing her for always asking.

It must be her backup singer, Billie Frank

It's possible they've been turning Billie way up for years.
