Here, I'll try to post overlooked artists from previous list and also a few updates when needed (indicated by changing the color)
We focus on artist from the 60's, 70's and 80's. When I can find, there will be, sale lists from 60's review ";Music life"; and Billboard ";Music labo";.

What is Oricon ...

Oricon is one of the few sales ranking charts published in Japan since the late sixties. Another was the now defunt Music Lab (used in Billboard during the seventies, heighties and early nineties). More informations on the many charts existing in Japan here (japanese only).

Luckily or unluckily , nowadays we only have Oricon's various charts and very partial Music Lab's top 20 published in Billboard issues to be informed of the succes of Western Bands or artists in Japan.

But first, it is useful to understand what really are the Oricon's figures. For that, the best way is still to read this very clearly written article Understanding Japanese Albums Sales. After that, one can easily understand the sometimes apparent and illogical contradictions between Oricon and RIAJ.
