Reviews are out and this is surprisingly getting very mixed reviews. Currently at 60% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I don't get the criticisms however. All the negative reviews I've read focus on this being too realistic and created as a cash grab, but especially the latter is frustrating considering that's true with every live action remake?

Yeah also 57 on metacritic. Not bery good but still better than Aladdin or dumbo. Aladdin has a very positive score with the viewer audience though and as long that's happening it will be fine.

As far as I could remember, I think with The Jungle Book they actually made the animals mimic more human-like expressions while with this one they did a more photo-realistic approach.

It still doesn't make sense though. The Jungle Book had 95% on RT / 77% on Metacritic and that followed the same formula.

EDIT: Just saw abi's response. They were both made by Favreau though, and he said he improved on the formula? I don't know, but I feel that critics might be too harsh on this. I guess we'll know when the film comes out next week.

^I don't think critics were complaining about it 'being realistic', it's more about 'too realistic that the animals couldn't emote expressions (like they are in the wild);, while in the Jungle Book the animals adopt human expressions, while still being realistic if that makes sense.

This one is with the Jungle Book:
The animal puppets were performed by Artie Esposito, Sean Johnson, Allan Trautman, and April Warren. Favreau utilized motion capture with certain actors, expressing a desire to avoid overusing the technology in order to prevent evoking an uncanny valley effect. For instance, Bill Murray's lifted eyebrow was incorporated into Baloo's facial gestures. we took some of the distinctive Walken facial features—iconic lines, wrinkles and folds—and integrated them into the animated character.
In The Lion King, the animals just act like how the are in the wild. Same facial expressions when they are angry, sad, happy. I guess that's what the critics are pointing.

They went for an even more realistic approach with this. And I think they had much more new story line for the JB and it is much less of a classic. TJB is also really the only remake that has been praised. I also thought reviews would be better especially after the positive response after the premiere.

Anyway, as a fan of NatGeo & Discovery Channel documentaries, I'm just gonna look forward for the visuals cause they look amazing so far (except that I still wish they would've increased the color grading a little bit).

I agree. But at the end of the day, we shouldn't care much about reviews anyway. Aladdin was penned by the critics yet it's on its way to 1 billion box office and has crazy longevity because of very positive word of mouth.

Tonight is the premiere in Paris, with the (terrrrrrible) French cast.

Aladdin wasn't that bad, but it lacked the soul of the original somehow, which is what i'm worried about this too. I do have to admit that I liked the changes they made to the story, but yeah, it could have been a lot better.

Exactly what I'm seeing. It's so annoying that they've used this film to attack Disney's remake strategy as a whole.

The Lion King was the highest grossing animated movie ever until Frozen () surpassed it, no? Just based on that, Id expect this version to outgross Aladdin et al.

Well there are 8 animations which have grossed more but since it's from 1994 it is hard to compare

I have to admit after seeing the Hakuna Matata clip on Jimmy Kimmel I get were the "too realistic" critics are coming from.
Simba looked weird singing it, as it's such a happy song, but a lion's face just doesn't look happy due to the "droopy" mouth. I do think though that I won't mind it as much in the context of the whole movie. If you are willing to engage with the movie, you probably get used to that look fairly quickly.
Add to that, that I'm a sucker for beautiful landscapes, and you can be sure that I will definitely get something out of the movie. And the 2019 soundtrack is great.

It's also very apparent with A LOT of the negative reviews that they were never going to like it anyway. Way too many make it very clear how much they loved the original and that they hate the recent slew of "live action" remakes per se.

The "cash grab" argument is silly to me, because we're talking about Disney here. One of the "cash grabbiest" corporations to ever exist. If we're gonna go down that hole, there's no reason to point the finger at this particular movie.

I've heard from many that Timone and Pumba steal the show. I also heard great things about Scar. I've also read and heard the adult Simba was the weakest part of the film.
