Something of a London hat-trick at the top of the pile this week - if one employs a little licence as regards ex-pat Swedes Francobollo, now based in the capital: The Duke Spirit and fast-rising Coldcut/Roots Manuva are all London natives, of course. As suggested, Bon Iver claims the biggest upward move at #20 (+18), with all of last week's five new entries boasting climbs of ten places or more. (Dadaist punk survivors The Cravats also jump thirteen places with the first chart run for singer The Shend since he fronted The Very Things almost thirty years ago.) Hidden Orchestra's haunting Wingbeats is this week's highest entry at #29. Okay, here we go...

Great debut for The xx. "On Hold" is actually the first track i've ever heard by them ( ) and i really like it, the voices sound so good together. I keep an eye on them and try to check out the album when it's out.

It's a good one for sure - but their eponymous (and Mercury-winning) debut album is where it's at for me. That really took everyone by surprise.

Thanks for your comments, guys - new chart to follow...

The Duke Spirit keep a stranglehold on number one for a third week despite stiff competition, including strong upward movement from C Duncan and the late Mr Cohen. At #11, Nick Cave claims the highest new entry thus far as he follows the chart-topping Jesus Alone with the title cut from his sixteenth studio album. The Wytches (#27) and Run The Jewels (#29) also claim chart debuts inside the thirty, while She Drew The Gun continue their momentum with the week's biggest climber at #13. Here 'tis:

Despite holding at #3 last week, Coldcut and Roots prevail to reach the top, thereby ending the three-week reign of The Duke Spirit. Francobollo, however, hang in at #2 for a third week, while Nick Cave and She Drew The Gun jockey for position - seemingly at the expense of C Duncan and Leonard Cohen - as the race for Christmas number one hots up. (Or simmers gently, however you wish to view it.) Run The Jewels (#14, +15) boast the biggest jump, while, after last week's glut of eight new entries, just two new songs make the cut this time - Burial (#31) and Bonobo (#39), with a couple of re-entries to boot. Let's just call this a 'steadying' week with the year fast drawing to a close. (I'm heading to California for my festivities, so next week's chart will likely arrive a few days early...)

However...in just over a month, She Drew The Gun have scaled the entire Top 40 to claim the JWTF Christmas number-one: Nick Cave’s paean to all post-yuletide pines has to content itself with third place, while Anna Meredith climbs into the Top Five after eight weeks on the chart. Whyte Horses have the most festive-sounding of four new entries at #31, while Bonobo (+12), Burial (+11) and Kate Tempest (+10) all jump ten places or more. Have a fine Christmas, all – I’m off to Los Angeles…

So - to the final chart of 2016... She Drew The Gun hold on to the top slot, with the previous chart-topper from Coldcut and Roots hanging in at #2. Burial make a bold statement by climbing to #3 (+17), with the excellent Desert Mountain Tribe taking the biggest climb for some weeks at #14 (+21). Agnes Obel catches herself on the way out with the week's highest new entry (#18), while Francobollo also double-up on chart entries (#27). All that remains is for me to extend New Year wishes, all the while hoping and praying that 2017 surely cannot be as bad as the year just gone. Thank God we have the music, eh?

The first Top 40 of the new year sees Burial make it all the way to heaven, with the fast-riding Desert Mountain Tribe in seriously hot pursuit just behind them. Girl Ray (#10) and Dutch Uncles (#18) share the honours for the biggest climb (+15), with Agnes (#7, +11), A Tribe Called Quest (#8, +12), Kate Tempest (#13, +10), Francobollo (#14, +13) and Laura Marling (#27, +11) also registering decent upward motion. Jagwar Ma become only the second act to register a third hit since the chart re-emerged (#25), heading as they do four new songs on the list. Lead on, Macduff...
