Huge Fire in Portugal (61 dead)

    Hi guys,

As you might know there has been a huge fire in Portugal. More than 60 people have lost there life - some of them while trying to escape the area got killed by the flames whilst in their cars.

My partner and I have set up a just giving campaign to raise funds to help the families that have lost their loved ones but also the families that have lost their homes. If you can please help by donating here https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/pedrogao-grande

If you can't please share the link to raise awareness.

    Thank you

The BBC reporting that 62 have so far been killed.

Absolutely awful tragedy. I'm watching BBC News and they are reporting that people were trapped in their cars - awful way to go.

So unnecessary I heard it was because of fire raising? WHY?!

I'm so scared of fire. Two huge fire tragedies these days

Edit! It was lightning strike. Doesn't make it less awful

                          This is disgusting.
Our forests absolutely destroyed by the wood industry.
Over 50% of our woodland cover is of Eucaliptus, the tree they use to make paper. The same tree which comes from Australia and evolved to release their seeds during the fire season.
But it doesn't end there, because associated with Eucaliptus come several invasive, also Australian, Acacia trees, such as Mimosa, which are highly invasive and even more prone to being burnt down with fire which helps them spread.

So we have fifty percent of our forests being occupied by fuel, plus all the Acacias which intertwine with the Eucaliptus.
Where we don't have these two highly inflammable and invasive species, we have Pine Tree plantations, Pinus pinaster, also an invasive plant introduced by the Romans. This plant is also no resistant to fire and even though it does offer some more resistance, it doesn't compare to the native mediterranean trees which have thick bark layers and have evolved to stop fires, such as several Oak species, Strawberry Trees or 'Pinea' Pines.

Our forests managers and all past governors who are aware of this problem are guilty. The people who continue to destroy our ecosystems through forest or river destruction are all culpable of this mess. Because make no mistake, there are people who profit from the fires.

In addition, there's no money spent on prevention.

This is not a surprise at all. There are forest fires every year and people dying every year. This year the perfect circumstances for destruction just happened to come together.

But this WILL happen again. Because every fcking year people say they're going to change shit and nothing is done.

There are small towns in the middle of the woods and florest in Portugal. Mostly in the center of the country a lot of people live in the middle of nowwhere. And they need to travel thru those small roads to make it out of there. Sometimes there's only one way out and that was why they were caught in the fire front,
