Well it is 17 years since Read My Lips and she is a grown adult now, I think it’s quite unrealistic to expect her to go “full pop star”, same reason Beverley Knight keeps releasing these Soul covers albums rather than the R&B she released back then.

She’s on a whole different level from Beverley Knight! I see no reason why she can’t be driven like Kylie or Madonna. She’s been such a unique and rewarding pop star.

Sophie has never been as big, famous of or as driven as she was during her debut era. In many ways she’s been her own worst enemy.

Good news for Wanderlust and Familia haters

Sophie Ellis-Bextor might be releasing a greatest hits album to mark her 21st year in industry, but she’s still intent on making new music.
The Murder on the Dancefloor singer, 39, said she’s already got an idea for her next album of new material, and is keen to go in a different direction after releasing the orchestral version of her greatest hits this autumn.
“At the moment I’m just following my nose. I’ve got an idea for the next album and that’s about as far as I can see,” she told the Standard.
“I think you tend to go in one direction and then you have the gut feeling to do the opposite for the next thing.”
Ellis-Bextor’s last album, 2016’s Familia, was Latin American-inspired while 2014’s Wanderlust had elements of folk and baroque music.
As soon as I start feeling like something’s got a bit comfortable I think ‘right let’s pull the rug out.’ That’s why the orchestra thing appeals as well. It’s time to try something a bit different,” she said.
“I think the main thing is just wanting to do stuff that makes me happy and remaining in love with making music – that hasn’t shifted at all.”
Ellis-Bextor is married to the Feeling bassist Richard Jones and the couple have four sons.
“I think because I have a family and I’ve got young children and that comes with all the chaos and demands of family life, I think it’s made me a little bit selfish with my music – it’s given me a place that’s for me,” she said.
But before she starts working on her new sound, the British singer will perform the best of her old work at the Royal Festival Hall in October.
“I’m approaching the 21st anniversary of when I had my first deal and I thought well doing a traditional greatest hits, for me, there was no point, but doing something where you can slightly push and pull the chords in a different direction, that really appeals,” she said.
Ellis-Bextor, who released her debut solo album, Read My Lips, in 2001, said she is a better performer than she was as she’s more herself on stage.
“When I was younger I used to have more of a stage persona, whereas I think the more I’ve done and the more comfortable and confident I’ve got the more I feel like the gap between who I really am and how I perform has got smaller,” she said.
“I take my job as entertainer very seriously, in that I want everybody to have a good time but I also know that people take their lead from me so my job is to put everybody at ease.”
But we already know that the next album is heavier on the electronic side.

A while back, Sophie announced that she was including a new song by Ed and her on The Song Diaries.

Now, she made one more announcement - she's recording an orchestral disco cover of Carol Williams' "Love Is You" for the album. Looks like we're getting 18 tracks now. Here's the list of songs so far...

    • A Pessimist is never disappointed
      Groovejet
      Take me home
      Murder on the Dancefloor
Music gets the best of me
      Move this mountain
      Mixed up world
      Today the sun’s on us
      Me and my imagination
      Catch you
      Bittersweet
      Not giving up
      Heartbreak
      Love is a camera

All of the descriptions of Familia (latin/folklore/whatever) sound so promising, but the actual album is just average bland indie pop. Wanderlust pt. 2 but without the highlights

Interested in this orchestral album, but looking forward to the new style shift for her next proper album

Her next album after the Orchestral album is more electronic. It is with Ed again, but you might like the new sound. She planned to do 3 albums with Ed, so...

Also, if its any consolation, Biffco is working on the Orchestral album. He's involved in the Love Is You cover.

I hate his production, i don't care if it's electro or not. She also promised a more latin/dance sound for Familia and we got THAT.

Come on, she has 11 top 40 hits and some from the last few years that were popular on radio.

    Spoiler!

There's no need for negative comments like these. 6 top 10s and 6 top 40s (on this collection) is pretty good. Plus she's not actually calling it a "Greatest Hits" album. It is an orchestral re-working of some of her many singles.

So... while we wait for album #7 from Sophie, Chris Evans premiered her upcoming single "Love Is You", which is a cover of the original song that Groovejet borrowed samples from.

The album, "The Song Diaries" is out in January 2019, along with baby #5. Yes, Sophie is pregnant again and is expecting her fifth baby in January. Sophie also announced that Murder On The Dancefloor will be used to promote the album - it's got a spanish twist this time around. Also, David Arnold (of Sherlock, Die Another Day, Casino Royale, Godzilla, Independence Day, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Quantum Of Solace, Chronicles Of Narnia etc., fame) has worked on this record. From what I understood, the album is co-produced by Ed and David.

You can hear the whole interview and the world-exclusive premiere of "Love Is You" on The Chris Evans Show. Sophie's version is upbeat and cheerful. Its the sonic equivalent of a burst of colours. I cannot wait for the HQ version on the CD.

She performed it at the Royal Festival Hall and here's a highlights reel!

Loved the second half but thought the whole thing was fantastic! Heartbreak, Not Giving Up and Today The Sun's On Us were top notch. Shame she didn't perform Mixed Up World, she probably doesn't relate to it as well now that she's happy and creating even more babies.

Sophie just released the orchestral version of Take Me Home on iTunes and Apple Music (maybe Spotify too, I don’t know). I thought I read somewhere that Murder would be the second single, but I guess this makes sense, especially because she recently performed the song on Blue Peter.

The new version is exactly as she described it - orchestral disco. The strings are gorgeous, the bass guitar does more than enough to make you move. There’s a simple drum in the background to keep the groove steady.. the other instruments include horns and what sounds like a xylophone but I could be wrong.

Sophie’s vocals are top notch - I love the slight variations from her original version. Everything is recorded live and you can tell - there are places where I feel her vocals are slightly drowned out by the intruments, but I guess that was bound to happen, considering that vocals weren’t being done separately.

I wish the song went on for a bit longer though. 3:15 is such a safe song length - it’s almost as if it was made for the radio. The RML version is 4:10 minutes long. I was actually hoping we’d get a 5:00+ minute orchestral version that goes from orchestral disco to rock disco towards the end with Sophie and the backing singers chanting the chorus. Oh well..

I like the new version 'Take Me Home'. I agree with SaintKing that she sounds very good on it.I can't wait to hear the other songs from this project, especially 'Murder'.

Well, if my guess is right, Murder will be out right before the album. It’s the song she is most known for. Maybe the orchestral version will help push a few more copies of the album if it’s released the week before the album..

I’m eagerly waiting for Heartbreak and Move This Mountain. I just know they’re going to be collosal. To me, Birth Of An Empire is the indication that if Sophie has a dramatic tune, Ed will do everything to make it sound bigger and even more dramatic. And I’m really hoping they deliver exactly that with those two songs.

I’m not exactly sold on Take Me Home but the music is rather lovely. It’s a pleasant song, but like Love Is You it seems to lack tension and drama, coming off twee and flat in moments.

I’m pinning all my hopes on Mixed Up World saving the album, the preview sounded bloody phenomenal.

The new version of Take Me Home sounds a lot like the Cher version musically.

It does, it’s a nice version but doesn’t really hold a candle to Sophie’s original recording.

There's also a ''video''. The song is cute, nothing too special, but okay for what it is.
