He was shamelessly appropriating Jamaican culture with that fake ass accent.

Yet this still managed to reach #10 on the R&B chart.

he wasn't really sure himself what he tried to appropriate, hip-hop, R&B or reggae which resulted in a novelty song

    Of course.
But looking at the bigger picture I find myself wondering aren't most of the canadian acts actually imposters?
Nickelback did this to grunge, Drake did the same to rapping, Avril Lavigne messed with the pop-punk early in her career and the list goes on

I have a love/hate kind of relation with this song. Sometimes I really like it, other times I can't stand it.
It is a true '90s classic though.

I only discovered this now, which is surprising considering what a hit this song was in the 90s according to the chart stats. It's a bit unconventional to hear this type of song from someone who looks like your average computer science student, but the speed of his rapping is impressive, the chorus is catchy and on top, the lyrics actually tell a story that by the way got rolled up in Plan B's 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' once again. The rap feature sounds like typical 90s hip hop - I instantly had to think of the 'Prince of Bel Air' intro. Very good work for a novelty hit - 9/10!
