After having had several UK Top 10 Hits, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich finally had a No.1 Hit. It was also their
biggest Global Hit. As usual, it did nothing in the USA, where their name & style was too 'eccentric' to appeal to DJ's
there. Xanadu was really the Capital of Kublai Khan's Mongol Empire, from the 1200's to 1369, when it was destroyed
by the Chinese. However, in this Single, it seems to be some exotic place, in 1700's Mexico, with the sound reminding
one of a Western Theme. There is a spoken part in it too. I think that the next UK No.1, by a Group to have one,
was 'Sugar Baby Love', by The Rubettes, in 1974. Between 1968 & 1972 we had Solo No.1 Hits with spoken sections -
'I'm Still Waiting' by Diana Ross, (1971), 'Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)' by Benny Hill, (1971), and the awful,
'My Ding-A-Ling' by Chuck Berry, (1972). 'The Legend Of Xanadu' is very like the Theme to 'The High Chaparral', TV
Western Series, (1967-1971), strapped to a Pop Song. It is also one of only 2 UK No.1 Singles with 'Xanadu' in the Title.
The other being 'Xanadu', by Olivia Newton-John & the Electric Light Orchestra, in 1980.

'The Legend Of Xanadu' -- Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich -- (1968)
