Black Panther: The Album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, launching with 154,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 52,000 are in traditional album sales.
The set, which features music from and inspired by the blockbuster Marvel Studios film Black Panther, garners the biggest week for a soundtrack — in terms of total units earned — in a year-and-a-half. The last soundtrack to score a larger week was Suicide Squad: The Album, which bowed atop the Aug. 27, 2016-dated list with 182,000 units earned. Black Panther: The Album was released on Feb. 9 through Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope Records.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 24-dated chart (where Black Panther: The Album starts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Wednesday (Feb. 21) — one day later than usual, due to the Presidents’ Day holiday in the U.S. on Feb. 19.

The Black Panther album includes a number of songs by Kendrick Lamar, who curated and produced the hip-hop-heavy album with Top Dawg Entertainment’s founder/CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. The set’s tunes also boast contributions from The Weeknd, SZA, Khalid and James Blake, among others. The album is the fifth No. 1 for Top Dawg, following a trio of leaders from Lamar (DAMN., untitled unmastered. and To Pimp a Butterfly) and ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron.
Black Panther is the second soundtrack to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2018, following The Greatest Showman, which spent two weeks atop the list (dated Jan. 13 and 20).
The 14-track Black Panther album’s debut is powered mostly by streams, as the set collected 93,000 streaming equivalent album units. (The remainder of its bow came from traditional album sales: 52,000; and track equivalent album units: 9,000.) It’s not unusual to see such a large streaming number for Black Panther: The Album, as hip-hop albums tend to perform well on streaming services.

Black Panther: The Album’s 93,000 SEA unit launch equates to 138.9 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs in the week ending Feb. 15. That’s the largest streaming week ever for a soundtrack, surging past the 40.4 million on-demand audio streams The Greatest Showman collected in the week ending Jan. 25.
Of Black Panther: The Album’s 14 songs, three are heard in the Black Panther film. According to Top Dawg and Walt Disney Studios (Marvel’s parent company), this is the first time in Marvel Cinematic Universe history that Marvel Studios has integrated multiple original recordings specifically for a film. (The Marvel Cinematic Universe includes 18 films that have been released thus far, stretching back to Iron Man in 2008.)
Black Panther: The Album isn’t the first chart-topping soundtrack set to consist mostly of music inspired by a film, with few tracks actually heard in its companion movie. It follows similar albums such as The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond (2012) and Men in Black: The Album (1997).

Black Panther S/T Goes Wild On The Charts
      http://www.fyimusicnews.ca/articles/201 ... ild-charts
Feb 19, 2018 by FYI Staff

Hollywood’s latest Marvel comic books action flick Black Panther is poised to have a super-sized box-office return and its accompanying soundtrack, featuring big singles from Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd, shoots into 1st place on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart in its first week of release. The s/t racked up 14,000 consumption units in the week and, with 3,600 units sold, took the lead as No. 1 best-seller. and top on-demand stream total, with 14M.

The album was executive produced by Kendrick Lamar and Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, who runs Top Dawg Records, the company that released the soundtrack and which is the home of artists such as Lamar, Schoolboy Q and SZA,. The record is powered by Lamar, who appears on five of the 14 songs.

It is the first soundtrack to reach the top of the chart since the Fifty Shades Darker album entered at No. 1 in February 2017.

The second highest debut of the week also belongs to a soundtrack album, as Fifty Shades Freed enters at 5. The soundtracks for both of the previous movies in the popular series each reached the top of the chart. The Greatest Showman is the third soundtrack album in the top ten this week, falling two positions, to 9.

'Black Panther' Score Will Join Kendrick Lamar-Curated Album in Top Half of Billboard 200 Next Week
                      https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... -next-week
                      2/22/2018 by Keith Caulfield

The score soundtrack to the smash Marvel Studios film Black Panther will join its Kendrick Lamar-curated sibling set Black Panther: The Album on the Billboard 200 chart next week.

Industry forecasters suggest the Black Panther score album will likely debut in the top half of the Billboard 200 chart with around 8,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 22 (with perhaps 6,000 of that sum in traditional album sales). Meanwhile, Black Panther: The Album is aiming for a second week at No. 1, with perhaps 130,000 units earned.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new March 3, 2018-dated Billboard 200 chart (where the Black Panther score will likely debut) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Feb. 25.

Further, the Black Panther score -- composed by three-time Grammy Award nominee Ludwig Göransson and released Feb. 16 via Marvel/Hollywood Records -- may also launch at No. 1 on the World Albums chart. The tally lists the top selling world music albums of the week – generally defined as the native music of foreign countries. The chart often includes titles featuring Hawaiian, Cuban, Celtic, African, South American and Korean music. On the most recent chart (dated Feb. 24), K-pop group BTS rules at No. 1 with Love Yourself: Her, while the Irish act Celtic Woman is No. 2 with its recent album Homecoming: Live From Ireland.

For the Black Panther score album, Göransson worked with African percussionists, a 40-person choir and a 132-piece western classical orchestra. In a press release, Göransson says “the only way I could properly score Black Panther was to travel to Africa to record, research and learn from as many musicians I could find. I was introduced to Senegal’s most incredible musicians and storytellers, and from there it all started to come together. One of the instruments that especially caught my attention was the talking drum, which together with West African sabar drums and ceremonial rhythms, became the foundation for the score.”

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Feb. 24), Black Panther: The Album debuted at No. 1 with 154,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 52,000 were in traditional album sales. The set’s arrival was powered largely by streams – as it generated the biggest streaming week ever for a soundtrack album.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
