Last time we crowned Ellie Goulding's soundtrack Hit Love Me Like You Do the winner of 2015's list. 30 Years ago later this month (25/26 June), Is where ARIA formally started to compile their charts in house (although according to wiki they report to have had charts since 1983), running alongside the AMR (Australian Music Report, formerly the Kent Music Report until 1987) right up until 1999.Code:1992: Vanessa Williams - Save The Best For Last 1995: Take That - Back For Good 1996: Coolio ft. Taking over as Australia's primary music chart possibly somewhere at the start of this period, Wikipedia provides data for the AMR and ARIA charts for 1988 and 1989, before switching solely to the ARIA chart from 1990 onwards. There are minor differences between the charts for '88 and '89. In 1988's case, Phil Collins posted a number one on the AMR chart in the latter half of the year that only reached number 2 on the ARIA Chart itself, however we will compile them together as per Wikipedia for this and the survivor for 1989.
Following on from Ellie's win with a soundtrack song in the 2015 list, there are several soundtrack hits that reached the top in 1988. Australian representatives include two number ones from Kylie and one from John Farnham.
