    Billboard 200/Catalog Albums Chart Update – September 22, 2018

    SEGER RIDES AWAY
Amid reports that his next tour will be his last hurrah, Bob Seger returned to the #1 spot on the Catalog Sales chart on September 29 with Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s Greatest Hits, and remained there on October 6 and 13. That extends the album’s #1 tally to 10 weeks total and five this year, closing in on the 10 weeks (in 2018) for Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1. Seger's album did not climb any higher than #20 on the Catalog chart in that three week span… Michael Jackson’s The Essential Michael Jackson returned to the top spot on the Catalog chart on September 29 and again on October 13 to push its 2018 total to eight weeks; it also had a week atop the chart in 2008. It pulls into second place for #1 weeks in 2018 behind Drake’s Take Care (10 weeks)… Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits, which first reached #1 on the Catalog chart for four weeks last year, was the #1 Catalog album on October 6 for its first #1 week of 2018.

    MIG’S MILESTONES
Sep 29: Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city reaches 200 straight weeks on the Billboard 200 as a Catalog album. Only three albums have a longer Catalog-status run in the top 200 (Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend – 248 weeks and counting; Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon – 225 weeks; Adele’s 21 – 208 weeks)… Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits reaches 300 weeks on the Catalog chart, and is the 36th album to reach that milestone… Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Icon: Lynyrd Skynyrd makes it to 100 weeks on the Catalog Sales chart… The Beach Boys’ The Very Best Of The Beach Boys: Sounds Of Summer departs from the BB200 after an 18-week run that began on Memorial Day weekend, truly appropriate for an “album of summer”.
Oct 6: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s All Time Greatest Hits reaches the 200-week mark on the Catalog chart, one week after another Skynyrd album, Icon: Lynyrd Skynyrd, reached 100 weeks on Catalog Sales. It’s the 69th album to reach 200 weeks and the second for the venerable Southern rock band. The Best Of Lynyrd Skynyrd: 20CMTMC has 240 weeks… Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions reaches 200 weeks on the BB200 as a Catalog status album… Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits reaches 400 weeks overall in the top 200 albums, closing in on the first anniversary of the Hall of Famer’s passing. The album also reaches 52 straight weeks on the BB200, and is one of 15 Catalog albums with a run of a year or more (counting Catalog weeks only) on this week’s tally… Fifteen Catalog albums drop off the BB200 this week, including Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book, which ends a 123-week run on the chart (the last 44 of those in Catalog status) going back to its 2016 debut… Other BB200 runs ending include Bon Jovi’s Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection (27 weeks), Linkin Park’s [Hybrid Theory] (17 weeks), and ABBA’s Gold – Greatest Hits (12 weeks).
Oct 13: Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend reaches 250 straight weeks on the BB200, further extending its record run for a Catalog album… Eminem’s The Slim Shady LP reaches 100 weeks on the Catalog Sales chart… AC/DC’s Back In Black notches its 600th week among the top 200 sellers, including weeks before and after reaching Catalog status… J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive reaches 200 weeks on the BB200, all spent consecutively since its debut in the last week of 2014… Adele’s 25 makes it to the 150-week mark on the BB200, spent without an interruption since its chart debut in late 2015… Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late ends a 39-week chart run, while Carrie Underwood’s Greatest Hits: Decade #1 drops off the chart after 13 straight weeks… Out of 56 Catalog albums on this week’s BB200, only two of them (Migos’ Culture and Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV) have fewer than 100 weeks on the BB200 total. Last week, Earth, Wind & Fire’s Greatest Hits joined these two albums to make three out of 59 Catalog albums on the BB200 that had less than 100 weeks.

    NEW ON THE CHARTS
Sep 29: 6LACK’s FREE 6LACK returns to the BB200 at #181 for its first week there in Catalog status; it did not chart high enough to reach the Catalog top 50. It is the first Catalog entry on the chart for the Atlanta-based rap artist… Zach Williams’ Chain Breaker debuts on the Catalog Sales chart at #23. The album had a brief 8-week run on the BB200, reaching only #174, but rose to #2 on the Christian Albums chart. It’s the first Catalog Sales entry for Williams.
Oct 6: Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV reaches the Catalog chart (#40) and BB200 (#161), joining the first three “Tha Carter” albums as Catalog entries for the artist, born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. The first three all reached the top 10 (#8 for Tha Carter in its one and only chart week; #5 for Tha Carter II; and #4 for Tha Carter III, his most successful Catalog album at 85 weeks). He’s also charted with Birdman, reaching #45 with Like Father, Like Son… A special edition of the 2003 soundtrack for the Best Picture Oscar-winning The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King reaches the Catalog Sales chart at #27.
Oct 13: Starset’s Vessels debuts on the Catalog Sales chart at #36, the first entry there for the Columbus, Ohio based rock band. Vessels spent just a single week on the BB200, at #11, in early 2017.

WANDERING STARS – Reserved for long-absent albums returning to the charts:
Sep 29: The Eagles’ The Very Best Of The Eagles returns to the Catalog chart for its first week in 2018.
Oct 6: Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III returns to the Catalog chart for the first time in over five years; it was last listed there on February 23, 2013. It has managed six weeks on the BB200 since 2013, including this week and two previous weeks in 2018.
Oct 13: Pink Floyd’s A Foot In The Door: The Best Of Pink Floyd returns to the Catalog Sales chart at #37, over five years after its only other chart week. It was #29 on the June 29, 2013 tally.

CATALOG NOTES – From the Catalog and Catalog Sales charts – Parenthetical numbers are overall weeks in the top 10 followed by 2018 weeks in the top 10:
Sep 29: On the Catalog chart: Six albums re-enter the top 10. They are Ed Sheeran’s x (68/26) at #5, Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions (69/35) at #6, Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend (831/26) at #7, 2Pac’s Greatest Hits (23/5) at #8, Journey’s Greatest Hits (479/15) at #9, and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (41/11) at #10... All five of Mac Miller’s top 10 albums from a week ago leave the top 10, and three of them drop off the chart. Metallica’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct, a #10 entry last week, also leaves the chart, but not before becoming the seventh top 10 Catalog album for the veteran band.
On the Catalog Sales chart: Four top 10 re-entries include Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (86/38) at #5, Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend (842/25) at #7, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Icon: Lynyrd Skynyrd (10/9) at #8, and Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions (46/18) at #10… These displace two albums that fall off the chart (Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains The Same from #2, Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggy Style from #10), plus Aretha Franklin’s Respect And Other Hits (drops #8-#20) and Alan Jackson’s Precious Memories Collection (drops #9-#32).
Oct 6: On the Catalog chart: There was no turnover in the top 10 this week, a week after six albums re-entered the top 10… Earth, Wind & Fire’s Greatest Hits was the top re-entry of the week, just missing the top 10 at #11, for its second chart week of 2018.
On the Catalog Sales chart: Lauren Daigle’s How Can It Be floats from #29 to #7 to collect its first top 10 week… Also returning to the top 10 is Neil Diamond’s All-Time Greatest Hits (16/7) at #4… Metallica’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct drops off the chart from #6.
Oct 13: On the Catalog chart: Lil Wayne’s The Carter III returns to the top 10 at #1, its 19th overall week in the top 10 but its first since September 24, 2011. The album had the larger part of its 86 chart weeks in 2010 and 2011, reaching the chart for only four weeks since then… Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits returns to the top 10 at #9 (93/15). Like Lil Wayne, Tom Petty has a new album in the top 10 of the BB200 this week… Only two albums leave the chart this week, one of them Earth, Wind & Fire’s Greatest Hits, after having a solitary week at #11 last week.
On the Catalog Sales chart: ABBA’s The Best Of ABBA: 20CMTMC rises from #14 to #3, surpassing its previous peak of #6 and joining Gold – Greatest Hits (#4) in the top 10. It’s the sixth week in the top 10 for “The Best Of ABBA”, and fifth this year… Also reaching a new high position is Stevie Nicks’ Crystal Visions… The Very Best Of Stevie Nicks. It rises eight spots to #5, bettering by one spot its previous peak, and getting its fourth overall week (third this year) in the top 10… Returning to the top 10 at #7 is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits (107/27)… Aretha Franklin’s Gospel Greats is one of the top 10 dropouts. She still has four albums on the chart, but none (for now) in the top 10.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Rick and Morty' Soundtrack Arrives, Tops Comedy & Vinyl Albums Charts
    By Keith Caulfield | October 12, 2018

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

    — Soundtrack, Rick and Morty – No. 107 — The soundtrack to the Cartoon Network animated TV series Rick and Morty debuts at No. 4 on the Soundtracks chart, earning 7,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 6,000 were in traditional album sales, with 3,000 in vinyl LP sales alone (No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart). The set also launches at No. 1 on the Comedy Albums tally.

Rick and Morty follows another successful animated TV series soundtrack from Sub Pop Records: The Bob’s Burgers Music Album. The companion set to Fox TV’s Bob’s Burgers has sold 74,000 since its release on May 12, 2017. It peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200, No. 3 on Soundtracks, No. 1 on Comedy Albums and No. 2 on Vinyl Albums.

    — Rod Stewart, Blood Red Roses – No. 62 — Stewart’s 43rd charting effort is his first album for Republic Records and bows with 10,000 units and also launches at No. 7 on Top Rock Albums. The set was led by the top 10 Adult Contemporary hit “Didn’t I.” The track -- his 23rd top 10 -- marked his first non-holiday and non-cover top 10 hit on the list since 1999, when “Faith of the Heart” peaked at No. 3.

    — Aretha Franklin, The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967-1970 – No. 65 — The late diva’s new compilation debuts at No. 65, marking her 48th chart entry. The 34-track collection includes her nine Billboard Hot 100 top 10-charting hits between 1967-1970 (all of which were on Atlantic Records) including “Respect,” “Chain of Fools” and “Baby I Love You.” (Franklin charted an additional seven top 10 Hot 100 hits after 1970: five on Atlantic, and three with Arista Records.)

    — Loretta Lynn, Wouldn’t It Be Great – No. 78 — The living legend collects her 17th charting album on the tally, as Wouldn’t It Be Great bows at No. 78. Lynn charted her first 13 entries between 1967 and 1975, and then did not revisit the list until 1993, when Honky Tonk Angels -- her collaborative album with Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette -- reached No. 42. She then came back in 2004 with her Jack White-produced Van Lear Rose (No. 24), and then in 2016 and this year with Full Circle (No. 19) and Wouldn’t It Be Great, respectively.

    — Kids See Ghosts, Kids See Ghosts – No. 197 — The album re-enters after its release on CD on Sept. 28. (The set was previously only available to purchase as a digital download.) The title earned 5,000 units (up 34 percent) with a little more than 1,000 of that sum in album sales (up 388 percent). The set hits vinyl LP on Nov. 2.
