Thank you SO MUCH for posting these!! The 1980s/early 1990s Danish charts have been truly the hardest to come by in all of Western Europe I feel. Can't wait to finally see how the likes of Sabrina, Sinitta and all the other SAW acts did in Denmark...at last! Hope you get better soon!

Looking forward to further entries here.

Q magazine ridiculed Wham!'s 1996 Danish number one album - partially the horrible Europhobia of, at least, that part of the British music press (pop and rock music, or at least the geopoltical alignment it tends to encourage, must take at least some of the blame for Brexit) and partially the "80s stigma" that prevailed in Britain at the time because of Britpop.

Was struck by the situation in Feb/Mar 1984 - two successive number ones by British acts, one of which made number 27 in the UK and the other never made the Top 40. I do wonder whether Cliff was a particular beneficiary of these not being bona fide sales charts (though the Irish charts also weren't sales charts until 1992 - was this common in the smaller European markets until around that time?).

Hi Jan, Hope you are recovering well from your surgery
You have the "permission" (as: in you may put them here) to post the nielsen DK charts.
However, should the copyright holder contact UKMix for infringement, etc., all those posts must subsequently be taken down.
    All the Best,

There was another chart during these years in which "Crime Of Passion" also went to number 1 in March 1984. It was a top 10 in Danish newspaper "Jyllands-Posten" apparently made up of sales in Fona stores in Denmark. So I actually think "Crime Of Passion" was a big hit in Denmark. Cliff Richard peaked at number nine but might have been higher in the chart in February 1984 (the paper didn't start publishing the chart until 18 March 1984).

And before anyone asks: Yes, I can also put up those charts. :-)

Jan, please post all you have! If that's at all possible

What chart was actually the most representative and influential in Denmark during the 1980s?

    None! :-)

Since the B.T.-chart was not a sales chart I'd say we didn't have an influential Danish chart in the 80's. Maybe the one in monthly magazine "Vi Unge" (which I will bring you later).

    All the Best,
Not quite that simple! The charts I have from 5 March 1993 to the end of 2000 are charts that I have bought through my work.

But no need to worry. I have asked and I have an "okay". So this thread needs to change its name to Danish Chart Archive - Singles 1979 - 2000 (B.T./IFPI DK) :-)

Finally feeling a little better! So let's get on with another Danish chart year.

Coming up is 1985. This is a year with a few holes due another strike at B.T. - much shorter than in 1981, though. I'm filling in the gaps using Music & Media (Eurotipsheet) and by looking at positions the week after a missing week.

1985 is a strange one. Two christmas singles chart way into springtime and both become tops hits of 1985. One of them even enters again at the end of the year.

Famine in Africa very much dictates chart success with two major charity singles ending on top of the year-end chart. The biggest one is not the one you think it is. ;-)

Before 1985 a lot of German artists had charted in Denmark singing in their native tongue, but in 1985 a great deal of German acts are singing in English chart.

Also, Eurovision is once again big - at least the Danish part of it. And we get some novelty songs and chart rarities.

Oh yes, 1985 has it all. Brace yourself!

Official Danish Singles Chart 1985, March (Source: BT/IFPI)

Strike at B.T. starts late this month so the chart for 29 March is missing. I use Eurotipsheet for the Top 3 for three weeks.

    - Tears For Fears get their first of four Danish hits.
    - Agnetha Fältskog enters and eventually goes to number one for one week.
    - Modern Talking enter with the first of seven hits in a little over two years. The first hit goes to number one for four weeks.
    - Madonna gets her debut. From 1985 to 2009 she charts with 50 different songs in the Danish singles chart whether it be this non-consumer chart, the following CD singles chart between 1993 and 2007 or the download/streaming chart, Tracklisten, the current singles chart in Denmark. No other artist has had more hits than Madonna in Denmark.
    - Pointer Sisters get their only Danish chart entry.

B.T. still on strike for the first two weeks.

    - Danish Melodi Grand Prix (Eurovision) is held 9 March 1985 and six of the 10 entries end up charting with Tommy Seebach and the winning song by Kirsten & Søren (Hot Eyes internationally) both peaking at number two.
    - USA For Africa enter and spend nine weeks at number one becoming the second biggest hit of the year.
    - Dutch 80's rarity Videokids (Peter Slaghuis, later Hithouse) get a number four hit.
    - 1984 hit "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" by Dead Or Alive finally charts in Denmark going to number six.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1985, May (Source: BT/IFPI)

    - We Are The World dominates the charts all month.
    - Huge Danish act Tøsedrengene get their only (!) hit in the Danish singles chart which is just strange. (But probably due to the fact that this is not consumer based).
    - Dire Straits enter - but neither "Money For Nothing" nor "Walk Of Life" charts ...
    - Narada Michael Walden goes to number two with his first Danish hit.
    - Depeche Mode chart and go to number two. All in all they chart 40 times in Denmark.
    - UK's Eurovision entry enters the chart. So do winners Norway and Germany.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1985, October (Source: BT/IFPI)

    - "Afrika" still going at it at number one keeping Depeche Mode's "It's Called A Heart" from the top spot. One wonders if it had been number one, if "Afrika" hadn't been released?
    - Danish singer Dorte Kristensen gets her first hit under the name Danielle Deneuve. She also made Danish schlager music in the 70's using the name Mette (for some reason...?)
    - Modern Talking chart again going to number three (and copying themselves when it comes to the song).
    - Danish giants Tv-2 chart again and go to number two with the title track off their best selling album "Rigtige Mænd" which ends up shipping 250,000 copies.
    - Danish duo Laban enter late on. Maybe you have heard the English version of the song? It's called "Love In Siberia".

Official Danish Singles Chart 1985, November (Source: BT/IFPI)

    - When Danish Red Cross decided to make a charity single for Africa, Nanna's "Afrika" was not the only option. A handful of songs were made and the number two on 1 November 1985 was one of them. Of course it couldn't compete with the "official" Danish charity single - but it was a pretty good song by Sebastian.
    - Duran Duran side project Arcadia enter going to number five.
    - Anne Linnet introduces fellow Danish star (later on, anyway) Thomas Helmig - also a number five hit.
    - Norwegians A-Ha enter and their first hit goes to number two. They do get two number one singles later on.
    - No "Walking On Sunshine" in the Danish singles chart (!) but Katrina & The Waves enter late in the month.
    - So do Wham! eventually going to the top for three weeks.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1985, December (Source: BT/IFPI)

Last month for now before the year-end chart in a bit.

    - "Afrika" is finally beaten at the top by George Michael and Andrew Ridgely. "Afrika" raises two and a half million Danish kroner to Danish Red Cross and their work against famine in Africa. Really a unique feat by Danish artists in Danish chart history.
    - Denmark qualify for our first World Cup in Mexico in 1986 (which has a great impact next year as you will discover). First single to celebrate this is made by Johnny Reimar (you may remember him from charting together with smurfs on the very first chart in 1979). His schlager song ends up spending three weeks at number one.
    - Swedish 80's rarity Gemini (produced by Benny and Björn) enter.
    - Wham!'s "Last Christmas" re-enters two weeks before Christmas.
    - Danish actors and tv presenters Jarl Friis-Mikkelsen and Ole Stephensen (also portraying the Øbberbøv brothers earlier this year) get known as Walter & Carlo on tv, releasing music and in movies. Their first hit becomes huge in 1986.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1985, Year-end (Source: BT/IFPI)

So time for the best selling singles of 1985 according to IFPI themselves. Remember, the charts are not based on actual sales until 5 March 1993 but I think the year-end chart is the closest we can get to a sales chart these years.

Still there are some mind-blowing misses. I list them below. Here is the chart.

    1) Diverse Danskere: Afrika
    2) USA For Africa: We Are The World
    3) Modern Talking: You're My Heart, You're My Soul
    4) Baltimora: Tarzan Boy
    5) Duran Duran: A View To A Kill
    6) Tina Turner: We Don't Need Another Hero
    7) Tv-2: Rigtige Mænd
    8) Sandra: (I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena
    9) Two Of Us: Blue Night Shadow
    10) Paul Hardcastle: 19
    11) Depeche Mode: It's Called A Heart
    12) Murray Head: One Night In Bangkok
    13) Band Aid: Do They Know It's Christmas
    14) Opus: Live Is Life
    15) Tears For Fears: Shout
    16) Wham!: I'm Your Man
    17) Eurythmics: There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)
    18) Cliff Richard: She's So Beautiful
    19) A-Ha: Take On Me
    20) Videokids: Woodpeckers From Space

By this time local Danish radio stations have their own charts based on some sort of sales numbers from local record stores. In Aalborg, where I live, my radio station worked together with 6-8 record stores at a time. We didn't get actual sales numbers but every store provided us with a top 20 singles chart.

Based on those charts I can definitely say that the single "Vild Ting" by Georgs Bureau (a novelty song and a kind of cover of Wild Thing by The Troggs) is missing. The band themselves claim that the single sold 15,000 copies and it was number one on my radio station's singles chart for weeks. But it was released on a label which was not a member of IFPI so it couldn't enter the official chart...

Great misses from the 1985 chart:

    - Blind Date: Your Heart Keeps Burning
    - Time Bandits: Endless Road
    - Georgs Bureau: Vild Ting
    - C.C. Catch: I Can Lose My Heart Tonight
    - Dire Straits: Money For Nothing
    - Dire Straits: Walk Of Life (maybe 1986)
    - Kim Larsen: Rita (Maj 45)
    - Hazell Dean: They Say It's Gonna Rain
    - Paul Young: Every Time You Go Away
    - Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson: I Know Him So Well
    - Sister Sledge: Frankie

Jennifer Rush, Feargal Sharkey, Billy Ocean and lots more chart in 1986 in stead.

    Next up: 1986!

Modern Talking copycats Bad Boys Blue
Oooh, I'm not sure I'm with you there. Here in Russia (Soviet then) they were always seen as a different sort, and not only because of the vocals (quite distinctive by the genre's standards) but also of music - a bit heavier and black music-influenced. Still huge, though Not an act I'd recommend to serious listeners but a nice listen from time to time.

Otherwise - thank you so much for continuing with the thread, was really looking forward to it. And, above all, nice to see you're getting well!

Modern Talking formed in 1983, Bad Boys Blue formed a year later. MT released their first single in 1984, BBB came afterwards. The have the same sound, the sing straight vocals followed by falsetto. The lyrics were just about the same.

I have always felt, that BBB very much listened to the way MT sounded and more or less copied it. Yes, they found some inspiration in soul music - they had a black singer at the time. But "You're A Woman" sounds so much like "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" - at least to a Dane ;-)

I'm not calling Modern Talking originals or genius. Dieter Bohlen found a recipe and he copied it again, and again, and again. Which is why the succes lasted only two years. People simply grew tired of them. But I can only say, that when I heard BBB for the first time - although I actually liked it - I thought they sounded a lot like MT.

Anyone ready for one more year?

So what's to come in 1986? Well, as I told you Denmark qualified for the World Cup for the first time and, boy, did we make headlines. Our 80's dream team called "Danish Dynamite" thrilled the world with fantastic football beating Scotland 1-0, Uruguay 6-1 (!) and West Germany 2-0. People were talking about Denmark actually being a contender for the World Cup title and after the group stage Brazil and Denmark were favorites!

So on the singles chart the official Danish World Cup song by the national football team went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year spending eight weeks at number one. But glory did not last forever. In the round of sixteen we played naive football and Spain beat us 5-1. So the national team went home to Denmark...

Sorry for getting carried away here pretty off topic but the song has since become legendary and is widely regarded in Denmark as the best ever song by any Danish national team and can still be heard at football stadiums when the play at home.

A group of Danish schlager artists also made a song but it didn't get nearly as popular if at all...

1986 is the year where Madonna goes to number one for the first time. So do Level 42 and A-Ha. And Prince finally charts in Denmark. Also, the Danish Eurovision songs chart (among them another football themed song).

I hope you are ready for 1986.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1986, January (Source: BT/IFPI)

    - World Cup fever starts. Schlager singer Johnny Reimar grabs the number one spot for three weeks.
    - 80's rarity L-Vira's "Talkin' 'bout Rambo" enters (and sounds a lot like Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood)
    - Shakin' Stevens get his last Danish hit. But it being a Christmas song means that he has charted many times since and as late as the first week of 2019!
    - Danish football commentator Jørn Mader enters with yet another World Cup song going to number four.
    - A-Ha enter and go to number two again.
