Official Danish Singles Chart 1980, year-end chart (Source: BT/IFPI)

So, that was 1980 on the official Danish Singles Chart. Remember that the chart is NOT consumer based but compiled by the record companies. So it might have been a totally different reality had it been over-the-counter-sales. Still, I think the charts contain a LOT of fun songs.

    Here's the year-end chart:

    1 - Earth And Fire - Weekend
    2 - Olivia Newton-John & Electric Light Orchestra - Xanadu
3 - Goombay Dance Band - Sun Of Jamaica
    4 - Lipps Inc - Funkytown
    5 - Diana Ross - Upside Down
6 - Bette Midler - My Knight In Black Leather
    7 - Johnny Logan - What's Another Year
    8 - Nalle - Amanda
9 - Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2
10 - Nolan Sisters - I'm In The Mood For Dancing
11 - Seebach Band feat. Debbie Cameron & Lecia & Lucienne - Copenhagen
12 - Rocky Burnette - Tired Of Toein' The Line
    13 - Cliff Richard - Dreamin'
14 - ABBA - The Winner Takes It All
15 - Bamses Venner - Tænker Altid På Dig
16 - Alan Sorrenti - Non So Che Darei
17 - Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star
18 - Gibson Brothers - Que Sera Mi Vida
19 - Kelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love
    20 - Boney M - I See A Boat On The River
    21 - Boney M - Children Of Paradise
    22 - Frank Zappa - Bobby Brown
23 - Marti Webb - Take That Look Off Your Face
    24 - Bjarne Liller - Billet Mrk.
25 - Alan Sorrenti - Tu Sei L'unica Donna Per Me
    26 - Sophie & Magaly - Papa Pingouin
    27 - R.L. Orchestra - Rockytrain
28 - Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
    29 - Secret Service - Oh Susie
    30 - Donna Summer - The Wanderer

One wonders how Frank Zappa can be at number 22 with only three weeks on the chart at number nine. Also, B.A. Robertson had 13 weeks on the chart peaking at number four. But he's not on the year-end chart...?
I suspect that IFPI actually compiled a much larger chart (maybe top 30) but for some reason they only published the top ten.

Anyway, next up is 1981. And it's a complete mess. Danish newspaper business was hit hard by a massive strike from April to July which means NO CHART was published for a total of 20 (!) weeks. However, I have found some charts in Billboard so it's not all blanks those weeks.

I can hardly believe I'm finally seeing this after all these years. Literally brings tears to my eyes! I suppose if you wish for something hard enough and long enough...

Jan, I'm struggling to find the words of gratitude to you! It is absolutely marvellous!

    THANK YOU!

Thanks for posting these jan, most appreciated.

From the charts posted so far I've noticed that quite a few of the hits were songs that had been big UK hits a good few months (or even longer) earlier. Given the relatively close proximity of Denmark to the UK and the fact that until a decade and a half or so ago there was a regular ferry service from Denmark to Newcastle in England I would have expected UK hits to have charted a lot sooner in the Danish charts than they did.

Thank you for posting these charts, Jan! (Great work!)
Question: These charts are based on shipments to stores, isn't it?

Yes, they are. The first consumer charts didn’t begin until 1993.

But as I have written there are still some fun/great songs that one might have forgotten. ;-)

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, January (Source: BT/IFPI)

Alright, ready for a new year? I hope so because 1981 is a messy one. On 27 March the Danish newspaper business was brought to a halt by a strike among typesetters lasting almost three months - until 15 June - and then again from 2 July to 12 August.

That meant that 20 weeks of charts were not published. I have, though, found a few charts in Billboard (the Danish chart was not there every week) and I have tried to fill in the blanks.

It's really a shame that these charts were never published since on 19 June when the chart returned it had been expanded to a Top 15.

However, January is all good and here are a few highlights.

    - Tommy Seebach charts twice. First the instrumental "Smiling Turntable" and then the cover version of "I See The Moon" which reaches number two.
    - Kelly Marie goes to number one for three weeks and Boney M top - once again - late on.
    - Police get their first of only three Danish hits and it also ends up going to number one.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, February (Source: BT/IFPI)

    - Dutch band Sugar & The Lollipops go to number one for three weeks.
    - Tommy Seebach charts with yet another instrumental song. "Hit!" is the theme song from a Danish tv show at the time. Back then we had only one tv channel in Denmark and no commercial radio stations...
    - Sir Henry (the band where Tommy Seebach actually started as a young) chart at the end of the month eventually going to number three.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, March (Source: BT/IFPI)

Okay, so the newspaper strike starts 27 March. I have, in stead, used Billboard's Danish Top 10.

    - Kim Larsen has gone to the US and the first result is "Rock 'N' Roll City" (a song about New York) and the song eventually goes to number two. The Danish critics do not receive his English albums very well and these are hard times for Denmark's most popular singer ever. We will never know if the people liked it since these charts are not consumer based...
    - Police spend four weeks atop keeping Tommy Seebach away from his third number one. The next one is close, though.
    - Leo Sayer tops at the end of the month and Phil Lynott collects his only Danish Singles hit.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, April (Source: BT/IFPI)

First crappy month... No B.T, for weeks but using Billboard's Hits Of The World (and matching the delay in dates) here are the positions that I could find.

    - Tommy Seebach's entry and winning song of Danish "Melodi Grand Prix" is at number one - at least for three weeks.
    - UK number one, Joe Dolce Theatre's "Shaddap Your Face", enters.
    - Kim Wilde gets her first of 16 hits in Denmark.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, May (Source: BT/IFPI)

Bad, bad month. Only two complete charts, one almost complete and two completely EMPTY... :(

    Anyway, a few highlights:

    - A lot of Eurovision songs enter. Bucks Fizz, the winners in 1981, go to number one with their first of four Danish hits. In week 22 the English, Danish, German, Spanish, Irish and Swiss entries all chart.
    - Visage debut with their only hit in Denmark.
    - One of the biggest hits of the year enter. Phenomenon Stars On 45 with their number one hit, "Stars On 45 Vol. 1" (the one with all the Beatles songs and the Archies hit "Sugar Sugar").
    - Ottawan enter with the biggest hit of the year, as it turns out.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, June (Source: BT/IFPI)

Another messy month. B.T. and other Danish newspapers actually do return on 16 June so in the paper 19 June the charts are complete. AND the singles chart has been expanded to a Top 15 (which makes it an even greater shame that the strike hit in 1981).

    - Shakin' Stevens makes his debut and becomes quite a star on the Danish singles chart getting 16 hits, three number ones and four top three hits. And oh, did I like him back then :-)
    - Keld & Hilda Heick chart for the first time. The Danish schlager (married) pair also appear in "Melodi Grand Prix" a number of times over the years. Keld Heick has written more Danish Eurovision entries than any other Dane.
    - Østjydsk Musikforsyning get a novelty hit with their "version" of the Danish Eurovision entry this year.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, July (Source: BT/IFPI)

The strike resumes on 2 July and this month is, chartwise, the worst of them all.

    - Shakin' Stevens gets his second Danish hit eventually going to number one for six weeks (when the strike finally dies in mid August).
    - Robert Palmer charts for the first time. He only appears once again (in 1990 together with UB40).
    - Goombay Dance Band fail to chart very much with "Seven Tears", a UK number one.

I think there were some delay on these charts compared to what were hits abroad.

But I think you have to be careful concluding too much based on these listings since the charts were not consumption based. They were compiled by the record companies and IFPI themselves and of course they couldn't be impartial.

Over the years some very big hits don't appear on the Danish charts and I don't believe that Danes simply didn't like or buy these records. Sometimes the songs were released on companies that weren't members of IFPI so IFPI wouldn't include them on the charts...

Why do I put up these charts then? Well for a number of reasons.

    1) They were the officials charts and we didn't have any other charts at the time (local Danish radio stations began in 1983 and they started producing their own charts in 1984-1985 - including the station I'm working at).
    2) They have already been published in a national Danish newspaper so they are not a secret ;-)
    3) They contain LOTS of fun songs that one might have forgotten.
    4) From 1981 onwoards I will list the songs that I think are missing and would have charted if the charts had been based on actual sales figures.

    :-)
