    - Daniel & The Duettes (aka Daniel Pop) charts and it's not the Boomtown Rats song in a new version. True rarity from the 80's.

So this was the year-end chart in Denmark in 1981.

I think there were some big misses that can probably be put down to the fact that these chart were not consumer charts. The biggest hits missing, in my opinion:

Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough
Diana Ross & Lionel Richie - Endless Love
Duran Duran - Girls On Film
    Earth, Wind & Fire - Let's Groove
Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)
Hall & Oates - Kiss On My List
Hall & Oates - Private Eyes
Human League - Don't You Want Me (does chart but only makes it to number 12)
    John Lennon - Woman
Madness - It Must Be Love
    Rick James - Super Freak
Rolling Stones - Start Me Up
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (does chart but only makes it to number 10)

Based on the official charts Denmark missed the breakthroughs of Depeche Mode and Duran Duran altogether. I believe that wouldn't have been the case, if the charts had been based on actual sales. But we will never know ;-)

    Next up: 1982!

No breakthrough for Michael Jackson yet, either ...

I love how Danish charts sometimes feature rare hits like those by Telex, Landscape, Grace Jones etc. A bit like Icelandic charts I posted some time ago and those from Portugal - surprising, unpredictable entries. That's what makes those countries so much interesting!

A pity Ultravox seemingly didn't chart at all, even though they had good success in German-speaking countries and Scandinavia. Though they seemed to be popular in Denmark - European album Top 100 published in Eurotipsheet (later Music & Media) indicated that at least their 1984 album "Lament" charted - as they used chart data for it in their calculation (though I can't find the source for it). Would've been interesting to see the album charts eventually (if those exist).

Please, continue with the thread, I'm really enjoying it

    - Linie 3 are three Danish comedians still around in 2018 dividing Danes as to whether they are actually funny or not...

    - I have double checked this chart and B.T. actually put "Raise" as the title here. But that is the title of Earth, Wind & Fire's album! So either it's "Let's Groove", "Wanna Be With You" or "I've Had Enough" OR not even EW&F at all! No way to truly know this since this is my only source. Have checked Billboard. Doesn't help in this case. :-/

Official Danish Singles Chart 1982, September (Source: BT/IFPI)

    - Boney M get their last Danish hit of the 80's.
    - Popular Danish duo Rugsted/Kreutzfeldt (especially when it comes to albums) get their first of two singles chart entries.
    - Survivor chart for the first and only time in Denmark.
    - Famous Danish group Rocazino chart for the first time. Another big radio hit "All My Love" never charts which is very, very strange (and probably due to the fact that this is not based on over-the-counter sales).
    - Ex-ABBA member Frida goes to number two in Denmark.

    - Dionne Warwick enters with a number two hit in Denmark.
    - ABBA chart for the last time in the 80's.
    - 80's rarity Ingrid Kup gets a number two hit.
    - Kim Larsen enters with "5 Eiffel" (which was the name of a small pack of cigarettes in the 50's and 60's). The EP contains an old Elvis Presley song "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello" (Kim Larsen was a big fan of Elvis) and a couple of poems by famous Danish poet Frank Jæger with Kim Larsen adding the melody - and, oh, going to number one for five weeks.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1982, Year-end chart (Source: BT/IFPI)

So that was 1982 in the Danish Singles Chart. Here come the biggest hits of the year (again bearing in mind that these are not consumer based).

    1 - Nicole - Ein Bisschen Frieden
    2 - F.R. David - Words
    3 - Shakin' Stevens - Oh Julie
4 - Trio - Da Da Da (Ich Lieb Dich Nicht, Du Liebst Dich Nicht)
    5 - Falco - Der Kommissar
6 - Laban - Hvor Ska' Vi Sove I Nat
7 - Bucks Fizz - The Land Of Make Believe
    8 - Nicole - En Smule Fred
    9 - Shakin' Stevens - Shirley
    10 - Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra
    11 - Rod Stewart - Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me)
    12 - Kim Wilde - View From A Bridge
13 - Dr. Hook - Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk
    14 - Brixx - Video Video
    15 - Laid Back - Sunshine Reggae
16 - Tommy Seebach - Hip Hurra - Det' Min Fødselsdag
    17 - Sugar - Like A Roller Coaster
    18 - Kim Wilde - Cambodia
    19 - Frida - I Know There's Something Going On
    20 - Rocazino - Elsk Mig I Nat
    21 - Kim Larsen - 5 Eiffel
22 - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder - Ebony And Ivory
23 - Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger
    24 - Kim Larsen - Red Lights
    25 - Aneka - Little Lady
    26 - Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin - It's My Party
    27 - Dionne Warwick - Heartbreaker
28 - Cliff Richard - The Only Way Out
    29 - Chips - Day After Day
    30 - Dollar - Mirror Mirror

    Huge misses (in my opinion):

Chicago - Hard To Say I'm Sorry
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf
Duran Duran - Save A Prayer
    Duran Duran - Rio
Fleetwood Mac - Oh Diane (Fleetwood Mac: ZERO hits in Denmark!)
    Forrest - Rock The Boat
    Irene Cara - Fame
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock 'n' Roll
    Toto - Africa
    Toto - Rosanna
    Yazoo - Only You

I bet there are more - but these do not chart at all! "Fame" was pretty popular as a tv series in Denmark so I really believe the song would have charted big time had these charts been compiled from actual sales.

(Don't worry - some of the big hits of 1982 missing chart in 1983 ;-))

    Next up: 1983

That Brixx song is actually very good - an uptempo New Wave number with nice lyrics and a great chorus. I like it in both English and Danish versions, the latter maybe more Highly recommended - and a shame that Eurovision sticker maybe hampered its chances to become a big hit outside Denmark. Would love to hear some more songs in that vein!

Very strange how Bolland's "In the Army Now" charted strongly in all the Scandinavian countries (also going Top 3 in Norway, Sweden and Finland) but received almost no recognition anywhere else - even in their homeland of The Netherlands! You'd think at least German-speaking countries would react favourably - but no... It took Status Quo to turn the song into global (well, cross-European) hit in 1986-87.

Nice to see Suzy Quatro having a hit with the single from her New Wave-influenced, synth-based album! I thought it was a complete flop everywhere (despite being a nice - and very unexpected from such a rocker girl - disc).

Funny to see "Der Komissar" versions by Falco and After the Fire (a great band, by the way, very much underappreciated!) in the same charts for several weeks! And a bit surprising - I though the cover was from the next year... The same with Trio and Zander versions of "Da Da Da" - and strange how big a hit the latter was! I expected it to chart for a week or two being just a humorous take on an already funny song. But no, it actually turned out to be quite a success in Europe and, oddly, Australasia!

Also heartening to see "Child Come Away" by Kim Wilde being a noticeable hit. Fantastic song and, sadly, her first flop in the UK and most other countries (though it's understandable from its content - and I'm still at a loss as to why it was even released as a single, being completely at odds with Kim's image).

Overall, an interesting years, something of a watershed between the old and the new in music. Thank you, Jan!

Official Danish Singles Chart 1983, January (Source: BT/IFPI)

Time for another year in the Danish Singles Chart. Like I have said before the charts between 1979 and 1992 were not consumer charts but shipping to stores based and ordered by IFPI themselves. Still they contain a great deal of fun, great and forgotten songs. 1983 no exception!

    - Kim Larsen gets a flying start to the year with his "5 Eiffel" EP. Taco eventually takes over the top spot.
    - Gnags - another great Danish band succesful in the 80's and 90's - debut although they got together as far back as 1966.
    - Dexy's Midnight Runners enter but their run in the Danish chart doesn't quite match their success in the UK or the US.
    - Brødrene Olsen - the Eurovision winners of 2000 - get their first hit of the 80's.
