Hi all. I found this forum via a web search for the MTV Top 20 Countdown, and considered starting up this thread for discussion about and posting of old charts anyone might have lying about. (Grybop said he had a few from late '89.) For the latter, would ascending (20-1) or descending (1-20) be preferable?

wasn't La Isla Bonita #1 too, so were her earlier videos (the Video Countdown began in March 1984). I remember watching it religiously as a kid in the late 1980's and remember when the "Oh Father" video topped out at #5 that when it fell the next week, the VJ said that it was her first video at the point of the show to miss #1, which means that every video Borderline through Cherish was a #1 on MTV (except True Blue as the blue-background version wasn't even sent to MTV)

The ones prior to 5/25/91 (really 5/18, since Memorial Day was a Top 300 of All Time list) have a couple errors I vaguely remember, but can't put my finger on. I do remember Gerardo jumped 20-18-16-15 in his first few weeks. And Tesla was #10 the week they dropped to 16.

As for 5/29/94, which was really 5/20 or so, Smashing Pumpkins was 15, Mariah Carey was 14, and Pink Floyd was new at 18 with "Take It Back".

And the July 26 and August 2 charts were both from a couple weeks earlier. And as it turns out, they seemed to be using slightly different charts or something, since 10 on the latter week was Baby Baby Baby by TLC, which would reach #1 at the end of August. (Sadly, I am missing the three weeks of the top 20 that fell in between.) And out of curiosity, is non-mover a term used in Eurasia or something?

ETA: And to answer the Madonna related question, she did reach #1 again with I'll Remember in early June '94 and Take A Bow in late Feb. '95, the latter spending 2 weeks on top.

Perhaps you're right. I have watched this charts at the MTV Europe (I'm from Bosnia). For a list of August 02, 1992 you're right for the TLC, Das EFX was a suggestion for the next list, maybe. Non-mover means that there is no change compared to the previous week. Do you have some old charts. Please publish

Ahhh. Thanks for some of those, though the August of '92 one, which you listed as August 16, 1992, was two weeks earlier, as were your other postings, though I understand they aired in your territory two weeks earlier. And I'm a little bummed you couldn't get the complete listing, because that's the second of three weeks I missed! Damn out of country, no cable vacations! I am pretty sure that that's the week Madonna peaked at #2 (and would remain there for another week) with "This Used To Be My Playground", and Tom Cochrane's "Life Is A Highway" peaked at #3. Additionally, Metallica would have started its descent from the #2 spot from the prior week with "Wherever I May Roam". (The following week, it would be #8.)

A little surprising how Pearl Jam got a slow start there with Jeremy. A few weeks later, right after they did the Top 20 of the summer, it rocketed to #1, and Pearl Jam would never be the same on MTV.

Anyways, I will start posting what I have very soon, and I do have plenty. I just haven't had the time yet this week.

BTW, sdidza or anyone else, if you have recordings, could you post any info from commercial breaks on chart debuts, peaks, weeks spent on countdown from videos on past years of the countdown? That would also be very informative. Thanks in advance.

Wow, thanks you guys! I actually have records of the same weeks that azul120 is posting through most of 1992, but he seems to be on a roll so I'll let him finish up before adding anything. I do have complete listings of those few weeks from 1992 that were missing from his, which I'll try to post tomorrow.

The only other continuous weekly records I have are from late 1985-most of 1986, after which I just have the every-other-week charts published in the back of Rolling Stone magazine (I think those run through 1990 or so).

I think it's a great idea to designate this as a central spot for people to submit old MTV Top 20 charts since as far as I know nobody has done it yet on a large scale. Maybe some other folks will find this thread and fill in the gaps!

I will get to TLC in due time. Watch this space!

Did RS have all of the weekly Top 20 charts, or just periodical ones? I'm very interested in what you have, and would definitely love to find anything in between in particular, especially the late '80s.

Glad to find other people here take interest in this. The Top 20 was mostly a guilty pleasure for me, and it was because openly watching it was ridiculed, and also being the youngest sibling, and of course having one TV with cable for awhile, meant that until sometime in summer '93, I wasn't able to consistently watch the top 20. Imagine all the pointless angst I had in me as a result.

In the meantime, I'm catching my breath. But I will resume soon!

If you have them, do feel free to throw in the following weeks: 3/7/92, 8/1 - 8/15/92, 2/27 - 3/6/93, 5/29/93, 6/26 - 7/10/93, 8/14/93. And again, for anyone who has any past recordings, any "flashback video" data would be appreciated. Thanks!
