I went with Shawn Mendes, as I'm close to positive it won't be Jason, and I don't think it'll be Clean Bandit either. Let's see if my pick even makes the top 100!

So i like all but one song in the poll (The one i don't like is Kate Nash, simply because i'm not familiar with it yet). This countdown will be awesome, really looking forward to it! Also, i went with "Solo" in the poll as it's my fave of them all.

As for the missed ones, there are tons of songs i enjoy or even love, so I'm not quoting all of them but just the ones I really love:

Selena Gomez - Back To You
    Years & Years - Sanctify
Rita Ora - Let You Love Me
    Zedd - Happy Now
Charlie Puth - The Way I Am
    Halsey - Without Me
Selena Gomez x Marshmello - Wolves
Mark Ronson & Miley Cyrus - Nothing Breaks Like a Heart
Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho
Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga - Shallow
Charli XCX - 5 In The Morning

"Nothing Breaks Like A Heart" will most likely have its impact on my countdown only next year...

    so many great songs already!

'Lullaby' by SIGALA / PALOMA FAITH was a personal fav of mine this year. I did enjoy the entire 'brighter days' album actually, but 'Lullaby' is the best song on it IMO.

'Back To You' is a cute song. '2002' takes me back into time, love this song so much.
'Thursday' is a cute empowering songs, although Jess can do better.
'Let You Love Me' is a bop, I like it. 'Only You' was a nice surprise for me!

'The Way I Am' is one of Charlie's best songs so far!
'Don't Leave Me Alone' is one of David's best productions in my opinion, definitely in my Top 10 songs by him.
'Woman Like Me' is amazing, I do think Jess and Leigh-Ann own this song.
'Trust My Lonely' is such an underrated song, although I do prefer the Frank Walker Remix to the original album version.

    I adore 'All I Am'.

Interesting batch of songs in the poll, I like quite a few of them. Nice to see Kate Nash up there, even though I wasn't really a fan of that song or most of its parent album. Voted for Kacey however, as I don't think Kate's song was that good to beat some of the others.

    100. Marshmello & Anne-Marie - Friends

Whew, this was one of my contenders earlier in the year, overplay claims her first victim! Itís still a great song but Iíve heard it so much itís now more generic to me than I first thought. I do think it has great production and I appreciate the switch up in production between choruses. Itís absolutely a cute bop and Iím glad it was a big hit for her at a time she needed it!

    099. Kylie - Dancing

This was the complete opposite, I thought it was so tacky and poor originally! Fortunately Kylie insisted on performing it everywhere and forced me to enjoy it, to the point where I really ended up bopping to it! By no means a Kylie classic but it does make me want to dance, so job done!

    098. The Chainsmokers ft. Kelsea Ballerini - This Feeling

The Chainsmokers are very hit and miss for me & Kelsea has never had a hit on my chart but when they came together for this they did the trick! Itís a laidback bop with memorable melody - I particularly like Ďthey tell me think with your head, not that thing in your chestí - issa good lyric! Cute as hell.

    097. MNEK ft. Hailee Steinfeld - Colour

Iíve seen MNEK before and found it a bit dull so it was a surprise when I saw him at Brighton Pride and the whole set fully fully popped. Itís when this song really came to light for me, itís a real feel good uplift anthem. Been listening to his album lots and itís far from the best on there but in terms of bright summer pop songs, itís great!

    096. Ellie Goulding x Diplo ft. Swae Lee - Close To Me

Weíre glad to have Ellie back! This feels like her at 60% of her creativity, itís pretty safe but also reminds me of her earlier albums and most importantly is catchy as Hell. The melody of the chorus with that minor or major note is unique but itís the verses that really win it for me (except her second verse on the solo version which is legit terrible, Swaeís verse is great so thank God itís the main edit)

    095. Clean Bandit ft. Marina & Luis Fonsi - Baby

Clean Bandit really can do no wrong. Even if this is no Symphony, they just canít help but create a pop bop. Itís not perfect, Luis doesnít really click for me until the end when heís filling in the gaps of the minimalist chorus but a) itís great to have Marina back and b) she sounds great on what is at times a really creative record.

    094. Zara Larsson - Ruin My Life

Clean Bandit down, their Symphony collaborator Zara down too. Nobody had time to vote for her in the poll but first option down too! I honestly have been surprised by the success of this, to me it sounds like a strong album track more than a strong lead single so I thought we were onto a flop but itís a slow burner hit! Iím glad she will definitely get the chance to release something with a bit Moore oomph! The explicit version definitely wins out here.

    093. Cher Lloyd - None Of My Business

Cher Lloyd either makes BRILLIANT songs or quite tacky ones. This is definitely the former! So classy, so catchy and would have been a real hit if she still had any clout. This really sits well in her voice and for a mid tempo it absolute slaps!

    092. Black Saint ft. Kelli-Leigh - Don't Wreck My Holiday

This was one of my beach songs of 2018, itís got great production value and while the chorus while catchy is the weakest part to me, the falsetto versesc and brilliant 12345678 bridge pulled it right back! It just seemed to keep cropping up for me and I couldnít help but shimmy when it did!

    091. Chrvches - Miracle

Chrvches had a big big album and turned a corner with me this year! Graffiti was in my hundred before I realised some songs Iíve left out so it falls to Miracle to be the first to chart! It packs a punch with the Ďask me no questions, I will tell you no liesí but thereís others that impressed me more from them this year!

"Friends" is just okay for me; I never understood the fuss over it. Good to see that we ranked "Dancing" similarly. I think it's good, but Kylie did much better for me this year. "Colour" is okay, but not the best thing MNEK did this year.

"Baby" may be no "Symphony" because it's even better!

I voted for Clean Bandit and Demi, as the song is a total bop.

Very much agree with you re: 'FRIENDS'. I was really into it, but pretty bland to listen to it now as it's been so overplayed. I actually really like 'Ruin My Life' and Ellie's new one is good too.

I went for Shawn Mendes, dunno why. VERY surprised to not see Saara Aalto in the poll!

Seeing all of those songs that missed out made me realise you're right, it was a really strong year for music! The best of the bunch for me are: Janelle Monae, Sigala (I think you'll find bbz), Blossoms, Jessica Mauboy, Christine And The Queens, RAYE, Tom Odell, Jess Glynne (AIA), Loud Luxury (Body) and Robyn.

FRIENDS I cannot BEAR to hear anymore due to persistent overplay from the radio, which is a shame cos I loved it when it came out.
Kylie is obviously far, far too low but at least she slipped into the top 100.
Just listened to the Cher Lloyd one, not bad but a bit nursery rhyme - preferred her "serious" phase.
Miracle is definitely going to be higher for me, I just love the instrumental break so much.

I meant to say, the cascade of notes on 'and if it wasn't you' or 'I don't wanna be' on Ellie is so satisfying!

Mike, you right, at least she did one with Sigma lol. Seems we all feel similarly about Friends. Tha Cher one IS her serious phase though!!

    090. David Guetta & Sia - Flames

Next, another song that I was considering among the upper reaches of the chart at one point, but got overplayed. I still do think this is a very decent attempt and I think one that I will fully appreciate again in the years to come. Sia sounds at her soaring best and the 'go go go' bridge is very cute leading up to a strong chorus. It's very enjoyable but is the more subtle of the Guetta and Sia sisters and didn't quite stand the test of time, for me.

    089. Kate Nash - Hate You

Kate returned to music after the success of GLOW and for the most part delivered what I wanted from her - a return to pop, but still with a bit of an edge. Parts of this song I could genuinely see being recorded by Taylor Swift, and with her level of production I really believe this is a smash single.. the chorus is a sweeping, gorgeous slice of melodic pop and if you are a fan of pop music you should really check it out. As the name suggests, it still has some Kate Nash bite but it's a really solid pop tune, with a slightly grim video!

    088. Ciara - Dose

Ciara really shines on this type of uptempo banger and she seems to just be able to pop one out on the yearly, that's talent! Despite sounding identical to 4 Minutes at the start, this tune soon develops its own identity and becomes very obviously CiCi. This has really served as a great gym song for me this year, motivational music that can serve in the club too!

    087. Taylor Swift - Delicate

Taylor didn't just have a year in which she should have just been recording Kate Nash offcuts, oh no! She was also recording her own smashes! After how in your face the majority of the new era was, Delicate was a really apt title for a tune that pulled back the layers and saw Taylor at her most chill. From the vocoded entry vocals to the almost talked verses it all leads to a beautiful chorus and a real saviour for me in this Taylor era, a bit of shade in all the light.

    086. Alec Benjamin - Death of a Hero

One of my very favourite discoveries of the year is this guy, an incredible young storyteller from the US. He has put out so many decent songs this year, culminating in a brilliant mixtape. He has a unique, delicate voice (think Passenger a bit) and he tells some wonderful stories. This is not my absolute favourite of his output this year but it still boasts a gorgeous floating chorus, all about seeing your hero doing something that disappoints you and this leading to the ruination of your youth. Great young talent.

    085. Chrvches - Get Out

Chrvches released a whole lot of bops this year, huh? They've charted for me a few times before but this is the first year I've taken note of their work not just sporadically, I really enjoyed the album and it started with this song, it is very repetitive but when the repeated motifs are catchy and singalong, is that really a bad thing? I particularly like the middle eight and it's 'you are a kaleidoscope' moment as it feel like it gives the song more depth than just being fun and catchy. I can imagine this being a fun one at one of their gigs. If you can do maths though, you'll note it's not number one, so another poll option falls.

    084. Gorgon City & Kamille & Ghosted - Go Deep

Gorgon City have released so many tunes over the year that this year I finally took myself to see their live show, and at a sacrifice given it was a 2am show on the last night of a festival when I had an 8am train. My God was it worth it though, one of the most fun gigs I've been to in ages, so many bops. This is a low key banger that has grown on me with every listen. The bridge is particularly fun before the chorus crashes in over that crazy cool bass. I love it.

    083. Louisa ft. 2 Chainz - YES

Louisa been done wrong, ya know. The girl has been bringing us bangers at every opportunity and can't catch a break. She's an incredibly talented vocalist and though this very obviously whiffs of Xtina, it's a great song in its own right and deserved to do more than all her singles do, which is sit just outside the top forty on iTunes forever and a day. It's true the video was a missed opportunity but a big prime time performance of this could have done wonders, since she can pull it off. A big, brassy girl power strip anthem, should have been top twenty at the very least.

    082. Nina Nesbitt - Somebody Special

Nina has really come into her own this year. A few short years ago she was peddling a pop folk sound, hidden behind her guitar and now she is a full on popstar backed with excellent production and interesting melody. Her voice has also matured and allows her to do this pseudo rnb styling on the verses before she lets her falsetto fly in the bridge and chorus. She really has evolved into one of my favourite and most interesting artists around and I look forward to her album and live gig next year, I really enjoyed her live show, to my surprise, in the first album era so I am sure I will enjoy it greatly. Slinky, sexy pop music.

    081. Charlie Puth ft. Kehlani - Done For Me

Speaking of slinky pop music, Charlie done brought it with the third single from his last album and he brought Kehlani along for the ride, continuing a string of excellently produced singles. I was surprised this wasn't a bigger hit here as it is effortlessly listenable and catchy, though arguably not as attention grabbing as the two that preceded it. It's funky, sexy but subtle and their voices work really well together, very decent pop.

Hmm...I never thought "Flames" was special. I remember you liking "Dose", but I don't think that one's good either.

"Delicate" is quality songwriting, and so unmistakably Taylor I have to smile sometimes when I listen to it. It grew on me quite a bit over the past year. "Done for Me" is meh.

Delicate and Done For Me are earworms!

Hate You has a nice pop vibe, but overall I find it underwhelming

Alec Benjamin - Death of a Hero

He has some cute songs, but ''Death Of A Hero'' is sadly not my fave.

Ooh you went to see Gorgon City, youíre blossoming! I love Go Deep too.

If Yes had been given a full on choreographed video it couldíve done better, such a waste.

Charlie had a great era, as have Chvrches. Get Out grew on me lots.

    Dose is fierce.

Tonnes of songs I like in the missed out section, especially the ones in bold. Some of them might actually be in my top 10 if I get round to compiling a chart for this year.

    Spoiler!

In the top 100 the Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson songs are my favourites, the latter being a massive grower. Both CHVRCHES songs are good (and in the right order), while I share your sentiments on Nina Nesbitt (I also saw her live during her acoustic phase when she supported Rizzle Kicks).

I normally hate Charlie Puth's music, but Done for Me really hits the mark. I loved Louisa's song when it came out, but it didn't have much replay factor after a few weeks.

Anne-Marie, Kylie, MNEK, Ellie Goulding and Ciara all fall under the "enjoyable basic bop but they can do better" category for me.

Voted Kate Nash but it's probs not even included!

    Nice to see Charli.

Clean B / Marina and Delicate are best of the chart.
Alec Benjamin has some good songs but not so much that. He's more akin to a less irritating Owl City than the acoustic Passenger - musically.

I loved Nina Nesbitt on her previous album but not so much this year.

    080. Fickle Friends - Broken Sleep

If you followed my chart last year, you will have seen a very high entry for Brighton's Fickle Friends, a band that have become one of my very favourites over the past two years. In 2018, they released their brilliant debut album and even moved onto another EP, the first track of which was this slice of pop heaven. I love the little clever intricacies, like how it leads you to think it's going to lead the verses with 'broken sleep' but instead goes with 'broken hearted' and subsequently 'broken promises'. It's little touches like that that let me know the creators aren't being lazy. Catchy verses, catchy bridges, catchy chorus... not my favourite of their output ever but very much in keeping with their indie pop sensibilities and sense of fun mixed with melancholy.

    079. Camila Cabello - Real Friends

From Fickle Friends to Real Friends now and while Swae Lee is essential in the Ellie Goulding single which charted previously, here I prefer the solo version from Camila's debut solo album. It's a very simple tune but sometimes the simplest, cleanest things are the best. I love the guitar led nature of it all and Camila's vocals sit on the rhythm really well, be it her lower verse vocal or her beautiful falsetto in the chorus. I find when the production is so minimalistic and the vocal is front and centre, it really brings it to light if you have a great singer on the track and the absolute runs Camila is capable of are really allowed to shine. That all said, the era has been so poorly handled. This could have been a UK hit if handled properly for sure.

    078. Meghan Trainor - No Excuses

HUH! This is a different type of production but also one I really enjoy, I feel like I would like this song even if it was just instrumental That's not to say Meghan's vocal isn't excellent, it comes in quite aggressively - I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else but I feel like she starts full pelt and I love that, it's like in the verses she's at a constant ten and then reigns it back in for the bridge and chorus. I like it when things happen backwards to how you would expect sometimes. Another one that's quite a simple song with great results, Meghan sells it, particularly live.. she gives it all she has. Fun.

    077.GLADES - Do Right

This year I've properly embraced Spotify and in particular listening to Hot Hits or pop playlists that contain songs I may not have known previously. That's where I discovered Aussie three piece GLADES and their pop stomper 'Do Right' . The female lead has a beautiful voice and the song itself manages to tick all the boxes of what sounds popular and current without ever veering into the generic. The bridge 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry...' plays with the timing a bit and adds a little something to me that seems in a way unexpected? However it works, it's a very listenable pop bop with a bit of edge, and you should watch below!

    076. Imagine Dragons - Natural

A song I heard more organically on Radio One now and it's a really interesting one, particularly structurally. The song starts quite devoid of much production and quite slowly, almost balladesque despite sometimes quick spitting lyrics. However after the slow build of the bridge and it's long held notes, it actually bursts into one of the most upbeat Imagine Dragons songs, boasting some of their most aggressive production. I love the juxtaposition of that! The changes of pace are really really cool and even In it's slower moments, it's one of the most catchy and melodic ID singles out there. Big mood.

    075. Nina Nesbitt - Colder

In the run up to her new album release next year, Nina very recently released an EP and its title track is one of the catchiest things she has released this era. Where some of her previous singles to my ears are pop songs with urban influences (songs like Somebody Special), this veers more to the pure pop end of her spectrum. That said, it isn't just happy clappy, it's very much atmospheric pop. The verses utilise the different elements to her voice, the bridges she's spitting lyrics in a quick and catchy manner and in the chorus all the production comes together and it's beautiful. I love the little run she does on the word 'colder'! Still not her best release this year for me but I'll be very happy if this is the quality of the album as it's very solid pop.

    074. Bastille - Quarter Past Midnight

After a bit of a barren spell in terms of hits, I was really glad to see Bastille return with this. Harking back to the sound of their biggest smashes, I really thought this was going to join their highest chart highs. It didn't, but gladly they have since added to their tally of top fives with the brilliant 'Happier'. This is an absolute romp of a song from the off though, great pace, great lyrics 'we want the bodies on the billboards, not the lives underneath them' and despite setting off at quite a pace, quite obviously steps up a gear when hitting the impeccably catchy chorus. I like that the chorus has a second part to it ('this is my favourite part oh help me piece it all together darling') as a) it's my favourite part too! and b) is a gift that keeps on giving when you think the chorus is already done. Tune.

    073. Maroon 5 - Girls Like You

Honestly I thought this was a very boring track from a very weak album to begin with. I thought they were mental when they announced its release. Well, I can't always get it right It definitely took the single release for me to appreciate it, though I can still do without Cardi on it so I chart the solo version, I mean, it's never going to be the most complex amazing song going but the long held falsetto notes in the verse and the coupling of those with the ones that follow just sound really interesting to me. And the chorus is undeniably catchy. I was in a club recently and heard a remix of this and honestly the added speed made it really go the hell off.

    072. Rudimental ft. Tom Walker - Walk Alone

Rudimentary are very very hit and miss for me. The James Arthur collab was fire, I thought the Jess Glynne one was really boring despite hitting Number one. The Anne-Marie one was more interesting but not wildly better. But this one has really captured my attention despite being fairly pedestrian. I do like that they are known for their energy and being a 'dance' act and their output has been very midtempo of late. I like Tom's voice a lot, and this is a good vehicle for it. It could definitely be accused of being a bit generic but it makes me smile, both for the lyric that sounds like 'I am a rock, I Emma Stone' and for the elongation of the word 'alone' at the end, as soon as you think it's done there's more 'oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ooone'

    071. Zedd & Maren Morris & Grey - The Middle

And finally Zedd was back with his signature tick tock production with another song that was an early contender for song of the year but fell off dramatically due to being everywhere. These early released really at a disadvantage huh? Still. It remains an incredibly catchy song with a great vocal which manages to have a huge impact despite a chorus with the most minimal of production. As we call it in the industry, a bop.

"Real Friends" isn't bad, but it is forgettable. I'm actually listening to "Natural" now; for me, it's a bit noisy, and certainly not among ID's best.

"Girls Like You" is better with Cardi, in my opinion, but even then it's not terrific. "The Middle" is the standout of the batch! It's an odd pairing with country singer Maren Morris on vocal duties, but she does a great job.
